There's also less room for error in European qualifiers than South America. This is why Brazil and Argentina ALWAYS qualify. Because they don't actually have to finish top of the group or runners up. They can finish 4th or even 5th in WC qualifiers and STILL make the World Cup. Even in down years, Brazil or Argentina are never going to not be in the top 5 in South America. And I think there's only 13 teams in their qualifiers. More than 1/3rd of the teams make it in. But in Europe if you don't win the group there's a chance you won't qualify. For most of history the runners up weren't even guaranteed a spot in the WC. This is why there's almost always at least one European big team that fails to qualify for the WC. Italy in recent years, Netherlands, Portugal, etc.
But the anti European bigots like to focus on the very worst teams in Europe which are barely even professional teams, while ignoring the DOZENS of elite and good teams. And ignoring the fact that there's less room for error. It's suits their narrative and makes them feel good by taking shots at Europe and European teams.
