- You guys and gals ever wonder what Neon Genesis Evangelion is, technically speaking? In terms of genre and medium and world-type? And what rules does it break? Please allow me way too much time to explain the show's structure while attempting to chug a pint of LCL liquid while playing Fly Me to the Moon.
In all honesty, this video essay is the result of a mega-script that got trimmed down for time, so please excuse any last-minute oddities apparent in the edit as I rewrite my video on Evangelion's perfect first Act and await the Third Impact.

I have seen A LOT of video essays about EVA over the years and you are only the second to talk about how the show is edited. And it is edited so masterfully, we should talk about its editing every time we discuss the show. And you cite references very clearly, which shows me that you are a man of science. Quite the plesant surprise this video turned out to be!

If you want to see creator-related work, go look at the 90s live-action Gamera movies-- Shinji Higuchi (who storyboarded Eva) handled the effects scenes in those and the shot composition is absolutely recognizable. (they start off low-budget, it's a good watch anyway, trust me). I saw the Gamera films first and with Eva it was immediately familiar visually. Such good fore/middle-background layouts.

I did not walk, but RAN to my living room to get my Evangelion production art collection book while watching this. I love the little notes in the book like “highlight shoes”, “never use close up”, “always use this bag”, etc. it’s really something. There’s so much to glean from the notes.
I’m not an artist, and only watched it in 2021 for the first time, but you can’t recreate that. Truly amazing story.

It's really a show where rewatching it AGAIN never feels like it goes unrewarded. Over the years, that first ultralong shot at the station definitely became one of my favorite scenes because of how powerful it can be if you accept the invitation to the charged space being made for you. The segment from Ebert is quite interesting and I'm glad you added it. I've been pondering on that aspect of anime for awhile; how it seems to be a medium that more readily conjures vivid incarnations of archetypal figures and stories.

I rewatched Evangelion for the second and third times last month and found new details and experiences both times, so saying rewatches never go unrewarded is a statement I can get behind. @@timberw0lfstudios evangelion's rewatchability is honestly insane, I honestly dunno how many rewatch I had in these almost 20 years after the first time (on tv, on Mtv... italian Mtv ruled back in the day, they had a anime dedicated evening container :D) and there still are things I never noticed before! that's a sign not of good, or great, but of Superior writing and directing.

I love the long lasting static shots in the series for the exact reason you mentioned, so it baffles me when when people online complain about / call it bad because it isn’t exiting for them / not conventional enough

I was a film student in the early 2000s. I always loved the artistic cinematography of Eva. I went on to be an animator, and film editor. I instantly noticed the stylistic references to UFO (since I was a fan) and I was blown away. That and the juxtaposition of happy anime with dark gnostic apocalypse. Nice vid.

This isn’t just one of the best video essays I’ve seen on Evangelion - and I’ve seen a lot of them - this is one of the best video essays I’ve seen on cinema, PERIOD. I’ve been deep diving into film analysis for many years, yet I learned so much in less than 22 mins, that it straight up humbled me. Please do more on Eva. After watching the Shin Kamer Rider trailer I had a nearly two hour discussion with a friend about Anno's editing and how it's the strongest part of Shin Godzilla. It instantly made me want to rewatch Eva. It's macros and micro editing choices are world-class. While there is a lot to say about his use of objective camera work (which is much more noticable in live-action) and careful composition, I truly think it's the edit that is Anno's strongest suit. For the record, I'm a script supervisor by profession, so seeing the edit is a part of my day-to-day and definitely colours my worldview.

As an artist, Evangelion is a visual masterpiece to me. More than once I've referenced Eva's framing in paintings I've done, or the use of color at times. It's a beautiful show.

The way Eva is edited and directed gave me tonal whiplash at some points. Especially in the first 3/4s of the series, major plot points and emotional turning points will be presented in a completely different manner than the rest of the episode. The composition of the scenes, the atmosphere of the shot, the behavior of the characters, and the writing of the dialogue will feel like I've suddenly been put in front of an alternate-universe Lynch film. Some scenes, like Shinji first entering Misato's apartment, feel like Wes Anderson scenes, where the composition and dialogue are telling you "a story is being told, pay attention". The long shot at the train station is one of the best shots in all of anime, and perfectly portrays the tension the two felt and the uncertainty Shinji was feeling as his mind raced to figure out what decision to make. Overall just an incredibly put together piece of art.

I would argue that not only do the static moments in this series succeed in building up a sense of anticipation and give the viewer a chance to ponder just what's going on in the characters' minds, the fact that the overall presentation is episodic really works in its favor, as well.
The audience gets the opportunity to pause and digest what they just watched and perhaps discuss elements that stood out to them with friends or whatever before moving on to the next part. I think this was just one of several essential elements which made the experience of the original series distinctly different versus that of the Rebuild films.

However if you begin to feel worse about yourself you like it more, but if you start feeling better about yourself its not like you stop liking it
okay so: as both a giant eva nerd (watched the entire thing like four times, have a tattoo, have multiple Eva related articles of clothing, seen a lot of misato smut) AND an indie animator that simply by chance just landed their third indie music video gig I appreciate you talking about the still frames A LOT.
While I love that the budgets and production value for anime are increasing I feel like more and more people fammilliar with the new stuff haven't learned the art of you being stuck with just a single, evocative frame in front of you. This is the art that makes Berserk 97' work the best out of it's other adaptations - it's a slideshow and because it's a slideshow they could focus on each slide looking beautiful. Arguably this is what let Jojo's bizarre adventure get adapted faithfully (even if part 6 and to an extent 5 were a bit of a letdown production wise), what made Monster's anime so close in feel to manga and what made me redraw the frame with unit 01 holding kaworu on my wall when I was 19 because my parents would be repainting the walls anyway after I moved out.
Just as abstaining from instrumentation and leaving you just with the lyrics can be a powerful tool in music, abstaining from movement can be powerful in animation. It's all about purpose.
people give eps 25 and 26 a lot of shit because "the budget ran out" or "it's just lazy and pretentious" and as someone who draws comics, someone who animates, someone who is planning on giving their life to the art form I have to disagree. Ep 26 makes me bawl my eyes out every time, without fail, whether I watch a clip on youtube or if it's me finishing the series again. Not despite those limitations, not because of them, but because they absolutely do not detract from the point of the story.

That was a budget choice already turned into cinematic mastery. NGE was not. They had the funding to redraw entire scenes from the previous eps, for End of Evangelion! People just lied.

Another great adaptation is Houseki no Kuni (Land of the Lustrous). It is quite rewarding to compare Hariko Ichikawa's manga to the anime and see both the similarities and differences.

shout out this entire video didn't check my phone once. One long freeze that I would really like to mention is towards the end with kaworu. It is THAT scene when shinji is holding him, that absolute dread that builds as you know shinji hates everything he is about to do and the sadness and regret you already feel. you really feel how torn he is on so many levels of that decision. it's like the inverse of him deciding to stay with misato in the beginning on the show.
I'm absolutely looking forward to dissecting the long shot with Kaworu, although I don't think I could say anything much better than you have! Love how you compare it to the first long shot with Misato; I hadn't thought about that previously. Thank you!
Oh yeah, more of this please! I majored in English and I UNDERSTAND a lot of what Eva is doing on the level of characterization and storytelling. We've got Christian and Buddhist mystic themes, psychoanalysis (particularly Freud, Lacan, and Jung), a deconstruction that confronts the implicit messages and questions of the mecha genre, which includes questions about how to end the cycle of violence and the value of humanity... I know some about film theory; I notice a lot of division in Eva's shots, whether that be from telephone wires, fences, or just the line between light and shadow. I'm actually very keyed in to that kind of thing. But some things are a little more obscure to me; I SUPER appreciate people who can fill me in on what I'm missing.

13:52 The animation breakdown scene actually blew my mind. That’s such a smart and visually engaging way to SHOW Shinji’s growth and basically all the stuff we do to be humans. I am especially in love with the scene where he’s flying and then he’s given a floor to walk on. The possibilities are no longer infinite, but they’re tangible. There’s something there. PERCEPTION! How amazing that episode really is. I have my problems with it, but there’s so much intentionality within it!!!

I have watched enough eva videos to know how many different topics and meanings the fanbase can pull apart from this legendary series. This video somehow made me love the series EVEN MORE than I already do, not only did you cover a new thing, but the whole regression, progression, strength through left and right motion is something I had NEVER noticed before and it just goes to show how amazing it really is. The show presents itself in so many ways that I doubt will ever be fully discovered. The episode names, the long shots, the characters, the story, the emotions, the intent, the art, and my favourite, (which im not sure I have seen a lot of people talk about) is the music, the timing of music, and the names of the songs.
Also, the production level on of this video on top of the fact that you have a separate script ready is genuinely incredible for how low of a subscriber count you haven't. Definitely deserve way more!

There's a reaction/analysis youtuber called Filmbuff just going through his first viewing of this series, and immediately they've noticed the animation directing paneling use of colour etc. It definitely doesn't go unnoticed, just not as talked about maybe because it's not as contested/confusing as the rest of the series

I literally put down my phone when I first saw Shinji and Misato stare at each other in that subway station. First, to check if I had paused the video, and second, to realize what kind of anime I've gotten myself into. Ever since that scene I was more immersed in actually watching the anime, but my hot take is that the final few eps, or the final arc, may have hammered down the message too deep that it left me annoyed or even pissed off, but I have yet to rewatch it and realize something new for myself.
I think we all checked to see if we'd paused or frozen the screen when that first ultralong shot hit. It definitely grabs your attention in a way few other techniques do.
As for the ending of the series, its controversial for good reason. I can't say it's written with much nuance, and the main message they push can overshadow what I consider to be many more sophisticated and traditionally untouched themes, but that all probably warrants a video on its own. You're certainly not wrong in how you perceive the ending, and I won't ever fault you for feeling as you do about it.

I love videos like this, fascinating perspective Jir0, I was 10 when this first aired weekly on tv and obviously back then didn't understand the nuances or meaning of what I was watching but fell in love with the series none the less. It's thrilling to watch the series today with adult eyes and videos like this give me an entirely new perspective. I have always dislike hearing the Eva's referred to as robots or mechs however, to me they were always something unique.
You're absolutely right, the Evas are so much more than Mechs, and we they definitely deserve recognition for how they revolutionized the genre.

i watch evangelion when im depressed....and it feels just really really cathartic as well as nostalgic as the first times i watched it were during summers when i was in highschool so part of it also reminds me of visiting Colorado (i live in kansas) so while its a kinda depressing anime for me personally it has undertones of nostalgia and the feeling summers would give you when life was a little bit simpler, the opening sequence reminds me of looking out the window while driving up windy mountain roads, the grandiose nature of the opening song reflected in the grandiose mountains rising high up into the unusually blue sky
To actually understand this show and get why it is a work of art, you have to learn how to SEE and HEAR. If you focus on just the text, the literal, you'll miss the plot (ironically). It's quite refreshing to see someone that gets this.
I'll be waiting for the next video. Hopefully you do one on End of Evangelion at some point.

As a fan of this franchise that will ravenously consume every drop of information and interpretation, I have to admit you definitely came at this from a perspective I have never seen before. I would say that most other angles and analyses have been thoroughly played out by this point but you went and found another little bit of Evangelion perspective I have rarely contemplated. It amazes me that a simple 26 episode series along with their theatrical follow ups can still generate this much thought provoking conversation all these long years after its release. This is such a good video on a great show. Not only did I learn about the specific approaches used in making this show, but about how cinema works in general lol.
As you yourself said many videos on eva focus exclusively on the message or the psychological aspect, which is fair, but the thing is none of those subjects would interest us if it was not presented in a way that makes them work. For me personally the remarks on animation in particular were very interesting because I'm not big into anime or animation in general, I practically saw this show by mistake, and at first the medium in which it is presented really threw me off and I was making conscious effort to stay invested by ignoring or reimagining certain aspects of the show. By the end of the experience however I was absolutely in love with it and am convinced that a story like this could only ever work if drawn, as it allows for so much more freedom in delivery of the content by giving more room for interpreting or abstracting of it. EoE in particular really impressed me with that, as the second half of the film is a sight to behold even if considering the presentation and visuals alone, which is why if you were to ever make a sequel to your video concerning this I would absolutely watch it
One thing though that I don't see people mention often is how much of a brash contrast this show likes to make, by presenting a seemingly innocent slice of life setting and then something horrific in the next shot, like Shinji having a breakdown, or the other way around, where right after a hard and taxing fight instead of immediately switching to the pilot to show us their state we instead are transported to a different place to explore a different subplot. This particularly caught me off guard with music, where Fly Me to the Moon, Komm Susser Tod, Everything You've Ever Dreamed etc. sound like joyful songs completely incompatible with the fucked up shit that's happening on screen. Definitely gave the whole experience a very surreal feel
Very well said, and you're completely right on all fronts. Evangelion uses nearly every trick in the book and then writes its own rules to evoke nonstandard emotions and reactions from the audience. I especially appreciate that you brought up the contrast of horror and home, and the use of music throughout the series.
