    I crammed an 800mAh 3s in mine, as far in as she'd allow. The little gear takes a beating. But I can fly all over my neighborhood and my legs give out before the bat does. It's my 1st plane and I've had a blast with her. She takes a beating and just keeps flying ( after some gluing and taping, of course 😅)
    I've since bought the PA18 super cub, and am having so much fun with them both. Just started rc flying a month and a half ago. And I love seeing "my planes" getting wrung out on CZcams. Thanks for this awesome video 👍

    Great video, and nice flying! In addition to the wild performance on this one, the UMX Timbers are built to last. I still fly my original 2017 model all the time, and it has held up remarkably well, only needing a couple new props and a new tail. All the lights still work, all the servos still turn, the flaps still flap. An impressive bit of micro engineering for sure.

      Mine too, its probably been flown more times and in more places than any other model I own and I have been an occasional flyer for over 20 years. Small space, no problem, take it on holiday, take it to work, FPV, even windy weather - it will do everything. Its a legend.

      @ModelAV8RChannel  Před měsícem

      Thanks man! I'm not certain a regular throttle calibration works on a UMX, so try bumping your throttle trim up until the prop starts turning, then bump it down 1 click at a time until it stops. That should get rid of the dead spot.

    nice review...I ended up with about 2 1/2 mm down elevator; about 3/4 throttle...CG still seems a 'touch' tail heavy @ 56mm ??? may be in the design for 3D...have a good one...I did tame it way down :-) ...

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  Před 2 lety

      Thanks very much man! Yep...it is tail heavy at 56mm, but has to be for some of the 3D/XA stuff. It will do all that, but not like an actual good 3D plane...they can be balanced totally neutral and do that stuff well. I would say move the battery forward for sport/bush flying if that is all you want to do with it...it will make it more stable for sure.

      @ModelAV8RChannel  Před 2 lety

      Thanks Chris! Yeah I had to solder some JST adapters to do it, but I thought what the heck, and I was curious myself. It has great power, but not spectacular 3D power, I might bring in the power a bit sooner with a throttle curve so I'm more towards center gimbal in a hover...right now it hovers at around 65 to 70% throttle.

  • @captnjim.
    @captnjim. Před 2 lety +1

    What a great review! I was trying to get used to flying mine for a bit, but I had a lot of issues with it wanting to pitch up... I didn't see an addendum with mine so that makes a lot of sense. I'll give your settings a try. I was struggling with flying with the flaps on and nearly wrote the flaps off altogether. (I've never used flaps on a plane before.) Thanks for the pointers in the comments, I think that will help a lot. You got a new subscriber today!

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  Před 2 lety +2

      Thanks very much Jim for your kind words and for subscribing! You'll get her sorted out...don't give up on it. Just remember with flaps you'll have one throttle setting where she'll fly straight and level. (for me personally with this plane that is 45 to 50%) Below that throttle setting it will naturally want to pitch nose down a bit...you'll have to arrest the descent with up elevator and throttle management. Above that throttle setting it will pitch up, so you'll ether need to back off the throttle a bit or just raise the flaps. It takes a bit to get used to, but once you master it your slow flight will be much better.
      A couple more things to think about when flying with landing flaps down. Your throttle changes need to be subtle...a little does a lot especially with a powerful plane. Also when you load the air frame a bit (turns) you'll need to add a bit of power with up elevator to maintain altitude. Again...takes a bit to get comfortable and master it but it is so worth it and the skills translate to other planes with flaps. Good luck with your practice and happy flying!

    Great and honest review. My take away from this is that for the more skilled pilots among us - and I no longer fit that category because l am older now and dont fly regularly enough - this can be a very capable model but dont expect a perfectly scaled down Timber X experience. Having said that I loved the full size Timber X and love UMX planes full stop so I will probably buy this one anyway!

      @ModelAV8RChannel  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks very much for the kind words. I agree...bigger flies better...no matter where you start. The UMX's are great, but they'll never fly as smooth as a well tuned Park flyer size. This one can be tuned down...it just takes some tinkering to get it to feel right that way.

Regardless, our friends at HH are still in the UMX game, and that's pretty dog-gone cool if you ask me! Now, where's that improved UMX Carbon Cub SS that folks have been screaming for??? Thank you brother John! So I will say in all honesty the old UMX Timber and the newer UMX Turbo Timber are easier to fly than this one. You can tell the extreme flying is what they really had in mind with the X. It DOES do everything well, but it takes a bit more skill to do it. I really like the versatility and the fact that no matter my mood it can deliver what I want out of it that particular day. That is significant to me. All that said...if I ever run across a NIB original UMX Timber for sale...it is bought on the spot. New 3s batteries with a known, common connector and a balance lead that run a bigger, better motor. A bit more mass so the planes carry more momentum, and better, stronger push rods with tiny ball links to make it easier to adjust control surfaces. All great improvements that just solidify their place in the ultra micro market.

    Wish they made these acro umx planes in epp at least eps is just a nightmare I understand they gotta keep cost down but how much more would epp foam cost compared to eps if I have to repair a plane I'd much rather an epp or epo plus you probably wouldn't have to if you crashed the same way with eps....

      It doesn't have anything to do with cost, it has to do with weight. Grams count at this size. Check out our challenge video with this plane. We hammered it. It is tougher than you think.

    I am still very much a novice at best. Not sure if watching you fly inspires me to try to advance or just give up😉. Would have liked to have seen what Ryan did with it.
    Thanks for posting your setups. Interesting learning that there is expo already built into the model. I always suspected there was mixing built into the trainers for coordinated turns since you can see it when moving the controls on the ground.
    Probably more plane than I should be flying but I like getting the feel for what the larger control surfaces will do even in basic flight.

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  Před 2 lety

      Well Mark don't give up for sure! lol. Ryan does the more modern fast 3D/XA flying...lots of snaps to points, tumbling, etc. He stays in the throttle more for sure.
      Advancing your skills in my opinion just makes the hobby better for you. The more skill you have the less limitations you have. Also when you start the frustration level often matches or outweighs the fun level...the more skill you develop as a modeler and pilot the more the fun greatly outweighs the frustration. I would recommend a larger park flyer size aerobatic sport plane, get used to...and comfortable with that, and the UMX Timber X will be no problem at all.
      Thanks for watching and commenting...we really appreciate it! Happy flying!

    Great review and maybe the best review I have seen so far about this airplane. If I understod you correctly so would you not recomend this as a first plane which is the case for me but I am aware of the need for some hours on the flight sim, but I haven't found this modell in Real Flight 9.5s yet. Thanks from Sweden.

      Thanks very much Leilf. Yeah the UMX Timber X can be challenging. It flies very well but it has some interesting characteristics. There are much better trainers out there.

    I've been less impressed with mine. I find it doesn't fly slow at all, mine is constantly dropping the low wing in the turns. Even when I keep the power on it still tucks under. I'm still trying to figure out a CG a little more stable for non 3D flight. I am way happier with my new 3S UMX Pitts.

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  Před 2 lety +3

      I understand man. The Pitts is much more stable, and I think the instability of the Timber X is what makes it so capable in acro. One thing on flying it slow...I used the flaperons and turn with rudder instead of aileron when I want to get it slow. The rudder is really sensitive so more expo was needed on that than any other surface for me. It doesn't take much rudder input to get it around and you can hear in our video (especially the stuff at our house in the front yard) that I increase the throttle slightly in the turns. If slow flight is mainly what you want moving the battery forward will make it a bit more stable as well, but it will still need some added power in the turns. I will definitely concede that the UMX Turbo Timber is much easier to fly slow if thats mainly what you want to do. The wing layout and lighter weight makes the difference.

      I dont own this model but from what I see - for me - this plane would just take a bit more skill to fly compared to the others in my UMX fleet. Your comment just adds to that belief. The great thing about the full size timber is that it was capable of really slow flight and dead stick landings even with an older, occasional flyer like me on the sticks. I may still buy this but I will do so knowing not to expect full sized Timber X slow flight.

      @@ModelAV8RChannel it's weird, I own the 1.2m Timber-x and while I've experienced the same tendencies with it they're much worse with the UMX version. Doing exactly as you described is what I did to tame the 1.2m but this little one keeps biting me. I guess I just need to give it even more throttle in the turns and work more on my rudder usage.

    would it work with 3s 500mAh or would these be too heavy? i have 3 of those that i bought for the umx a-10 but after the first few flights it was clear that those don't have enough capacity at all. upgraded them to the 850mAh but now i have 3 3s 500mAh batteries lying around and this umx timber x seems to be fun :D (i also have a turbo timber evo that i fly, having something similar in tiny would be fun)

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  Před rokem +1

      It's a fun plane for sure. It would fly on a 500mah, but in my opinion not well. These little ones are sensitive to any weight increase and at that size it doesn't take much to be to much. The UMX Timber X is robust...heavy already compared to similar UMX's. It's a full once heavier than the UMX Pitts, thats 20% heavier. I would fly it as light as I could. The 300's are pretty perfect for it.

    I realized I don't care what people think of expo, if it'll give me a more enjoyable flight I'll put as much expo as I think helps me. Iv even kind of started to replace my dual rates with just expo. Why program 3 settings for each control surface when you can do 1 and still have nice steady flight with full travel when you want it

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  Před 2 lety

      I agree Jake. I usually just do a single, full rate and adjust the expo as needed. I've never been an advocate of making the plane fly completely different by flipping a switch. That said its all a matter of preference. With this plane we showed two rates because it is very sensitive and small. We are hoping as a reviewer to give the majority of pilots the best chance to have success with this on their first flight. It is one of those planes that if a less experienced pilot gets behind it they are in trouble.

    • @jakeclauson9863
      @jakeclauson9863 Před 2 lety +1

      @@ModelAV8RChannel absolutely, starting from the recommended settings and then adjust to your individual needs to get a flight that's best for the pilot. No need to be peer pressured into certain settings. Idk if that's actually a thing but for me it seems like there's an unspoken trend in the hobby that if your not using certain rates/expo then your doing it wrong. But if your flying and having fun I'd say your doing it right, within a certain limit of course I would want anyone being wreckless. BUT I'm sure it also depends on the equipment being used so for what it's worth dual rates and expo may not be the same from tx to tx as well as person to person, plane to plane.. Which is my point of getting the equipment set up to suit the individual pilot without external pressure. But that's just my twisted view. take it with a grain of salt, like you should with anyone's opinion.. 😜

      I get where you're coming from Jake...you especially see that kind of stuff on the forums. While I know certain things can make things harder/easier on a modeler, the "right" way to do it is the way that brings you the most joy. Be safe, use smart risk assessment, and have fun!
