British rock artist Billy Idol released a version in 1981 (on the Don't Stop EP). Along with the track, "Baby Talk", Idol's version of " Mony Mony" went to number seven on the Billboard dance chart. A live cover version of the song became a hit for Idol in 1987 as well.
Idol's version of the song gave rise to an interesting custom in the 1980s. When the song was performed live in concert or played at a club or dance, people would shout a certain formulaic (and usually obscene) sentence in the two bars following each line. One example is: "Hey mother fucker! Get laid! Get fucked!" This custom led to the song being banned at high school dances across North America, although it continues at Idol concerts today.
Billy Idol's version was recorded on two separate occasions. The original 1981 studio recording is the most common version heard on rock radio stations across the globe.[citation needed] However, Idol released a live version as a single in 1987, while promoting his then-forthcoming compilation work Vital Idol. It was the live version that went to No. 1, coincidentally displacing Tiffany's cover of another Tommy James song, "I Think We're Alone Now", from the top spot.
As stated before, Idol revived interest in the original garage rock song. His live single version can be found on Idol's Greatest Hits compilation album, a 2001 Capitol Records release. That album has received positive critical reviews, with Idol's cover of the Tommy James tune specifically praised.

I believe there is no such thing as a song for a beginner. Yes I would agree that some songs are easier than others but each song has it's challenges. The great thing for me is I've been listening to this song for over 33 years :)
      Thanks for watching

you make it look so easy. im a beginner but doing well on a lot of riffs i play. like experienced in family told me, timing will get you everytime and how important it is spread those fingers. working on all that n gradual speed with songs that is bit faster . then when told all the intervals triads diads so much to learn but i will . you play great. how long you been playing ?

I began learning the bass in 1981. My music teacher told me, that once you get good you can get fast. Slow and steady wins the race. Cheers

Its my best playing bass I have. It also happens to be the cheapest bass I have. Paid $135 for it. I would love to get some more. I was looking for a 5 and 6 string. Here is a link for the US supplier: www.rondomusic.com/bassguitars4.html

BTW I made this song popular in the, I think the late 70's, had it played all over NYC in EVERY popular club you could imagine....I was into the club scene then. Nobody had ever really knew of the BIlly Idol version, until I had it played and paid 5 bucks a pop to play the record or the tape (which I carried on me at all times), to have it played in every single club in NYC. Next thing I knew it was all over the freaking radio. Thanks to me!!!....Billy didn't even have the balls to thank me..If I didn't "pay" to have it played, it was never heard in any club. I was a fan of his since his Generation X years. And after the Cybepunk CD came out....I never bought another one of his tunes....How ungrateful was he...the jerk!.....LOL!!!!
