- Thirty-six-year-old Tiffany Schmermund is so scared to fly she's only done it twice in her life. It's clinically known as aerophobia and symptoms can range from extreme anxiety, dizziness and nausea. Experts say the best way to overcome the fear of flying is to address it head-on. Schmermund flew from Florida to Texas to meet with Captain Ron Nielsen. He's a former airline pilot who now helps fearful fliers overcome their anxiety.
I find its really nice that a pilot has helped her so much. Good Job Ron! you'r off the list.

I've traveled by plane twice only in my whole life.
I hope she can overcome her fear.
we hope you can too. i wouldn't call myself fearful but I'm definitely nervous flyer :). for me what helps is to understand what the plane is doing and how the plane works, i don't know if it will work for you.
What a foolish woman

I travel 2-4x a year via plane at first I was kinda nervous but okay and then after that it started feeling like a long bus ride
@takumi2023 ringtone sound near landing (if you hear from cockpit)- or some buzzing= autopilot. Mechanical humming and slight jolt in it= landing gear being raised and the wheels stopped.= Shudder during landing= the pilot used to work for ryanair ( jk its just the landing gear absorbing the force of landing) Mechanical noise a bit after takeoff= flaps being raised (they increase lift by acting like small wings when angled, and slow down a plane so it doesn't turn into a missile during takeoff and landing). Robotic talking from the cockpit if you somehow hear it near landing or takeoff, just automated callouts for altitude, etc. Hope this helps
Similar situation, I just so happen to be sitting next to an airplane engineer, he knew everything would be fine, he told me all the sounds and sensations as we flew. He explained the mechanics etc. I was so grateful for that and him
I’ve been taking cbd to calm be down during flights. Best decision
Frrrr, it’s so much better when someone explains all of it well it’s happening
I hope they overcome their fear. Don't let fear stop you from traveling the world and seeing loved ones.
When I visited Colorado for a wedding, it was my 3rd time flying and I am extremely scared to fly. This couple sitting across the aisle noticed I was quietly hyperventilating, they came next to me in the open seats and the man told me he was a pilot then began explaining what the plane was doing, what the pilot was doing etc His wife took my hand and held it until I had calmed down quite a bit. That helped me so much, it was one of the kindest things I’ve ever experienced. I am still terrified of flying and I absolutely don’t want my son flying either but I can’t say that to him, it’s my fear, not his.
Same here! My adult kids hop on a flight at a moments notice, with no fear. Whereas I’m no terrified. I used to fly all over the country in the 90’s on my job-with no fear. But then I developed a fear at some point 🤷🏾
Even the pilot was shook by the landing 💀

I totally understand this woman. I used to get horrible panic attacks and one time I had one as I was flying and the person in front of me switched seats with the person next to me to calm me down. He was so calm and really helped me! I got on Zoloft and have not experienced any panic attacks in a while. I feel much better with my anxiety, I helped someone recently on a fight to Portland- the woman said she’s terrified of flying and I talked to her in a relaxing manner.

@@Anne1000.dude, pilots literally go through years of training to do what they do. You got your license in weeks. Chill out, also I don’t know what you consider “terrible” landings or take offs.
@@yaelgonzalez8006he probably watched one windy landing that was rougher than the rest and said "oh my god the pilot almost kinda crashed". Its reasonable t9 be afraid of flying for a bit but saying it sucks just because you judged some takeoffs and landings with an opinion that doesn't know 2 shids about planes is just rude and miserable
I flew a lot when I was younger and never felt fearful. Only getting older and watching too many plane crash vids and becoming hypochondriac did that change.
So the recent flights I took got me more nervous but focusing on breathing slowly really does help as does distracting yourself with counting and writing as shown in this video. I ended up writing on my phone how everything was gonna be fine and detailed why that is.
Eventually, I got over the jitters and my flights back home a couple of days ago were smooth sailing. Exposure therapy really is the best medicine.
Can you please elaborate on Exposure therapy
It's just flying more.
@@al1665I always believe that facing any fear is the key to overcoming it. But for me who has taken a total of 24 flights since the beginning of last year alone it has never gotten easier for me. I guess to an extent you just can't help if you don't like something. I've even been in a seriously bad rollover car crash and felt so calm the entire time. But put me on a plane and my nerves just can't take it. I'd never become one of those losers who doesn't travel because they're scared though. Part of life is just doing things despite not enjoying it. I'm just gonna keep flying and hating it.
I am scared too. I boarded a plane in Mexico when I was pregnant and between the hot weather, air conditioning not on yet, and feeling like the baby was on top of my lungs I went into a panic attack. Since then I became claustrophobic and scared to ride planes
Oh no! That sounds like it was a nightmare. I'm 37 wks atm and can totally relate with the baby on the lungs situation. It's terrifying!
Just remember the biggest accomplishment is on the other side of fear
I hated flying as a kid. I’m autistic, but my mom didn’t know back then and we would fly a few times a year. We always flew with Southwest, but I do remember one time a flight attendant helped me calm down. She carried me throughout the plane and was so sweet. I will always remember that. Nowadays I absolutely love flying! I still love flying with Southwest.
Lmao
That was very nice of that flight attendant.
Also, I think it depends on the cabin crew when you're traveling.
I made my first trip last weekend and the told the crew about how nervous I felt and they were like "Oookay...?" When I traveled to Berlin.
They didn't take me seriously. On the way home on the other hand, they were very nice and understanding.
They told me that there were nothing to be afraid of and that I could talk to them if I needed anything.
That made me feel a lot more calm and safe.
I knew that the crew were very experienced in this and if the plane was not working properly, they wouldn't risk everybodys lifes and flying with a broken plane.
I’m not afraid of flying but I will always remember the compassion of the British Airways crew toward the woman seated behind me who was severely anxious about flying.
Lol, you're not their kid.

Caption Ron is great!

I remember my first week in flight school, we got into the plane, and I was so excited to fly the plane for the first time and just before we took off, I remembered I had a fear of heights. I had to close my eyes till we got into the practice area where my instructor handed me the controls. And coming back to land I had to close my eyes again. I was able get over the fear after a month when I had no other choice but to take off and land without assistance. Morale of the story is, even the pilots sometime fear flying, we just do it to get paid. (I found out other instructors and students also had a fear of heights or flying in general)
If that’s true then what’s the transition altitude for the USA
@@thepilotgrayson4945 Seriously. This actually hurt to read. If you act like this around every pilot you meet I really suggest a career change. This was really sad to read.
I get you. I remember my first flight in a C-152. The moment we had a left the ground I had an immediate rush of anxiety. I remember taking a deep breath, and remembering I was in control. Within minutes, I was totally over the anxiety. My focus was entirely on my CFI teaching me manuevers and the general feel of the aircraft. Still one of my all time favorite planes to fly.
I have fear of heights too,but for some reason, not in an airplane. Maybe a very small plane like a cesna but not a flight like this
Wow. You took conquering your fear to a next level. Congratulations
I sat next to a woman who was scared to death of flying. I told her to talk to me! Let’s talk! And we talked the whole time during takeoff, flying and landing.
You notice when they were landing in this video, everyone is just dead silent. Like they’re all anxiously waiting for something to happen.
When we were coming in for a landing, I told her just look at me and keep talking! And I would keep talking back to her and just hold a normal conversation. There’s no sense in getting all strung up and dead silent just because the plane is about to land. We held our conversation during landing, and it was wonderful! No issues.
Can you blame them?! It’s terrifying to realize your at the Mercy of some Pilot and there’s nowhere to go! Aero phobia is definitely an acceptable fear!
you could go if you would cause a scene, start running around start knocking on the pilot door and demand an emergancy landing, they will give it to you but probably with the police waiting for you upon the landing to explain the situation. but there is a way to get off if you want to create a scene
It's the "nowhere to go" that sends me over the edge. I hate feeling trapped and haven't flown since 2019 but I'm trying to overcome my phobia so I can travel again 😢
Same! Last time flew was 2022.
I'm 37 years old and flown for like 50 times my entire life. Back on 2013 when i travelled from Jakarta to Istanbul i had this small anxiety mainly when the plane about to take-off and flown above conflict countries. For me, praying and controlling my breathing was the key.
I don’t fly a lot, so whenever I get in a plane I do get anxiety. Fortunately about 15 minutes in, I remember that I can do what I’m doing and my fear goes away.
Do what you’re doing-what does that mean?
What do uou do

I don't like to fly, but I watch a lot of "Mentour Pilot", and he really explains safety issues and procedures in a way that takes a lot of the stress out of it.
I'm a "Mentour Pilot" fan too and like you, I have learnt alot about safety and the importance of following the instructions given by the captain and crew. I used to hate flying but, it has gotten a lot better for me now
All the best!
He helped me!!! And now I still don’t love flying but I no longer have panic attacks! Thank you Capt. Ron!
I can relate to her. Ive only flown twice in my life. I get extreme anxiety in the airport and ive cancelled so many fun trips because of this. :/

I used to fly all the time as a kid and never worried, now I'm scared as an adult to fly. I still do it, but it's not easy. I've started using anti anxiety medication in my last couple of trips and it's helped.
I need someone like him for 12-16 hr flights. I can handle 1-3 hr flights, but long flights sends me into panic attack.
Flying terrifies me, I stay calmer outwardly but its knowing that IF something goes wrong that I'm helpless and will die for sure.
I'm one of "those" people too, who even get anxiety just buying the TICKET! 🤣
5 years ago I flew to NYC... NON-STOP SOLO!! I had a window seat, and was so anxious I could barely look out. I tried watching the little video screen in front of me... SpongeBob cartoons... to calm me down. The flight attendant asked me twice if I needed "something to drink?"
🍷🍺🥃 Said no... Then the man next to me, asked his wife across the aisle for a few Tylenol to control my massive headache. It helped... 🤯
Upon landing at JFK, I did "assist" the pilot to land the plane, by gripping my armrests with sweaty hands, and grinding my feet into the carpet!
SMOOTH LANDING... 😀
Next time will go for the vodka "drip" into my arm! 🍸🤗
Hahaha I am the same. And I am unable to fall asleep because of my adrenaline and fear. I feel like I have to be 💯 present and awake to “assist” the pilot otherwise everything will go out of control. 🤣
I am constantly monitoring for weird noises and moves. And I am watching the crew’s faces to see if I have to become more anxious or not.
And while in the air, I revisit my whole life and promise God what changes I will make in my life if we land safely 😆
Haha this is me 100%! I flew to Europe on an 8 hour flight overnight and didn’t sleep at all. I can’t even watch anything because I can’t focus. I’m expecting something to go wrong at any second. My stomach was so messed up from nerves. It is torturous every time I have to get on a plane. I feel you. And I pray the entire time too.
I may be a weirdo but for the most part I really enjoy flying. I've been very lucky having flown on some near empty jumbo jets, no passenger incidents, no mechanical issues with the planes, no injuries and no lost luggage. I always over prepare with lots of supplies on my carry-on and my phone loaded to capacity with books, movies, tv shows and music. I love landing in new and interesting locations. Idk abt all that I haven’t once and never will I already have anxiety and I think if I got on a plane I’d literally pass out or have a heart attack

I used to be so afraid of flying that I would take out my rosary and pray. LOL! But as luck, or dumb luck, would have it I got a job where I had to fly at least once a month. I watched a video that showed a straight line with rollers. In between the rollers represented pockets of air or turbulence. It made sense to me that as you're riding on the rollers you will hit the air between the rollers but naturally go back up again. Not sure why that had such an impact on me but I still use that logic today while experiencing turbulence and it always helps. Now I fly all over the world and have been through some pretty severe turbulence. I will never like it or get used to it but I'm no longer afraid like I used to be. I hope this helps someone so they too can see the world. 😊

After watching so many air crash investigation shows I realized that accidents can happen at any point of the flight. And with aviation industry being so careful in learning from every accident, that reassures me that flying is safe.

Having tools to cope with anxiety is one thing, but honestly, the best way to help people with aerophobia is to teach them about how planes work. understanding the physics behind aerodynamics and the intense engineering done to create these planes makes a world of a difference in peoples fear. Aerophobia usually stems from a lack of control and lack of knowledge. Understanding how planes work can help with that feeling of not knowing what's going on when you're sitting in your seat as a normal passenger.
I would also recommend folks who have a fear of flying to learn flight. Install something like a flight simulator and learn about planes how they work, knowledge is key to fight something you fear and you fear because of the unknown. A lot of the fear stems from also not having control. Maybe take a discovery flight and learn about how safety regulated flying is and all the steps that go into it before every airplane gets into the air.
Great tip. I used to be really scared of turbulence until learning about it and now I no longer am.

I am scared too. My last flight was on 2016. My phobia started when there was a scary turbulence. I mean really scary that everyone was shouting. And plane was shaking! Rain was pouring. That I think triggered mine.
The people around you were just scared, there's no big danger in turbulence usually (usually as in if there's extreme wind it can become dangerous but pilots never fly through stormy areas like that, they see them via radar too)
Flying is safer than driving statistically speaking, that's what I tell myself when I get on a plane. It is scary, hope these people concer their fears.

I used to have the same fear years ago and it gradually faded away when my flight frequency drastically increased and became normal to me, but once I got married and had children the fear is strongly back as my life is not only about me when I leave them home and I keep thinking about them during the whole flight and imagining bad scenarios .... I really don't know how to overcome those dark thoughts. :(

How to deal with motion sickness and fear of motion inside moving objects?
Love this. I had a panick attack on a flight to Colorado this year. The lady across the isle was holding my hand lmaoo no shame.
I get nervous because of how big the plane is and I feel like it will crash because the turbulence and drops is scary
Turbulence has never been the cause of a plane crashing turbulence can get bad at times but it can't bring down a plane
As a pilot in a small C172N/O, I used to comfort my passengers in more turbulent weather than this. Low-air turbulence was much worse than this on final approach - for them. They threw up in their air-sickness bags, but for me it was just a normal landing. C172 R/Q is so much better, as it has 180 HP!

Flying is and will always be the safest form of transportation. The deaths annually from plane crashes will NEVER be even close to the total deaths from being involved in a collision with someone else drunk driving.
Another tip that I found to help me personally is to NOT clutch the armrest. It heightens your anxiety, and can make you feel way worse.
if you have kids take them on flights early in life and get them used to that. (if you can of course) i’ve been flying every year since i was born to go see my family in Poland (8-10 hour flight) and i’ve never been afraid of flights

@@trinityp8575fear of flying is more just being unfamiliar with planes and genuinely thinking it can crash and that it's unsafe, or claustrophobia and the fear of heights. People don't really fear planes themselves
I simply hate the smell of the airport lol
All the best
Breathing exercises really helps fear anxiety. It helped me in my flight before takeoff and during takeoff.
That was kind.
I never had a fear of flying at all. I was 29 years old on my first flight and I was acting liked I was 6 years old on my 1st trip. I haven’t been on a plane since 2006. I was very calm on the plane.
I'm so scared I'm tearing up watching this
I'm glad i find thrill and excitement on airplane rides rather than fear and panic
That was really awesome advice that you can generally apply to distracting yourself in a state of high anxiety.Very Cool.
I need this man!!!
I think Captain Ron could benefit his flyers from also explaining a bit some of the technical aspects that the public doesn't know like the rigidity of the aircraft body, what do the different sounds mean (gear retracting, flaps moving...etc), the fact that aircrafts have advanced safety systems for everything... etc. I believe that a great deal of aerophobia has to do with the feeling of losing control and entrusting your life to someone else. This last part is pure speculation on my part; however, giving the reassurances shared earlier might also help psychologically IMO.
If I could have a live feed of the cockpit and the audio then I’d be much less scared
Cant relate at all. I love flying. Even stepping in a plane alone makes me feel that I'm already with 1 foot at the vacation destination.
0:19 I fell so bad for him he is so innocent
I fly more than 20 times whether long distances and short distance. I can tell music help lots. Just put your earphone and your most favorite music in high volume and close your eyes. Now you’re good to go. That high volume of your favorite music will help you focus more in music than airplane. It’s really helped me my first time flying and now I’m just used to it 😊
I've been flying since I was 2 weeks old. I sat next to a woman with severe anxiety about flying and talked to her most of the flight. I think it helped her take her mind off the flight and helped her calm down by putting her attention on other subjects. I've been on one flight where the landing was very rough and the plane actually felt like it bounced, though that might have been the suspension in the landing gear.
My first flight was over 24hrs all by myself and I thought I would be scared but I wasn't, since then I can't count how many times I have been on a flight. My husband and I fly alot. I hope they get over the fear
Over 24hrs?
Did you have a mid air refueling? 😂
@bagfullofmushrooms it's more than that if I add layovers
