    Mercer Frey is, in my opinion, the single best antagonist in the game. He doesn't need any deep motivation, he is just a horrible person, but one who is able to outsmart and out maneuver an entire guild of master thieves without any of them noticing, and only failed because of a fluke that the dragonborn survived.

      @HappyBeezerStudios Před rokem +55

      And he isn't in it for absolute power or immortality or the destruction of the world. His goals are small enough that he doesn't get blinded by them like so many of the other antagonists.

      @@HappyBeezerStudios The main thing is that he isn't some major supernatural threat, he's just an incredibly skilled and intelligent thief with a lot of patience. While he clearly has some inhuman capabilities, it is nowhere near the same degree as Harkon or Miraak or even Ancano, he just relies on his intelligence, and was clearly aware of the Dragonborn's every move, given that he vanishes after the Markarth-Side Quest and toys with the Nightingales when you try to hunt him down in Irkngthand.

    I love two things about Dagoth Ur in this video:
    1) He has that Doofenshmirtz vs Perry the Platypus dynamic, where he recognizes you as the enemy, but also has this strange urge to impress you and get validation from you. He’ll never admit this, of course, and will always act like the superior, but I think he also just wants his Nerevarine friend Lol
    2) His attitude toward every antagonist other than himself is hilarious. He treats them all with the, “Of course, my Nerevar, I am better than all these mongrel god-pretenders by default,” sort of attitude.
    Loved every second of this video!

    1. Mercer really was the best antagonist in the game. Mainly cause of how simple and hateable he was. He saw all the ceremony and honor of the the Nightingales and said: "Screw that."
    Killed his best friend, framed his lover, stole from the Guild for years to fund his lavish lifestyle, used the Skeleton Key in secret to make sure he never got caught and then tried to kill you and Karliah to cover his tracks. He's a complete bastard who was *immensely satisfying* to defeat.
    2. To be fair, as far as choosing the Empire over the Stormcloaks is concerned, its made blatantly apparent in the main story that the Thalmor are the real overarching antagonists of the Civil War storyline.
    Not only did they *let* Ulfric escape before the events of the game, but its all but stated that they've actively been sabotaging the Empire and prolonging the Civil War to weaken it, while the Aldmeri Dominion licks its wounds from the Great War.
    Hell, the Stormcloaks winning is just about the worst outcome in the long run.
    Sure, Skyrim will win its independance for a decade or two. But what then?
    By that time the Aldmeri Dominion will have recovered, crushed the still weakened Empire and then both Skyrim and Hammerfell will be at the top of their list of targets.
    Tullius might be an insufferable N'wah, but he's not wrong in thinking that only a united Empire can push them back.

    • @_Yomoholo_
      @_Yomoholo_ Před rokem +15

      lets not forget that an aldmeri victory may also mean the end of the world itself, in that context compromising with the mongrel dogs of the empire to preserve the existence of the dunmer may be the only option.

    • @GenBrony
      @GenBrony Před rokem +7

      The thing is, Skyrim can be defended with half a brain that Ulfric has.
      Not to mention, realistically the moot should vote for the dragonborn, why?
      The dragonborn has led almost every major battle of the war. The troops would be loyal all the same, and it cuts Ulfric down to a position he can't really rebel when his loyal troops would probably readily accept the dragonborn.
      Plus, the ways into Skyrim are terrible. Mountainous everywhere, one road from Cryodiil?
      Warfare with sword and shield was very different, they'd merely have to avalanche in the roads in, destroy the Thalmor's support wagons, and watch them starve in the cold snow.

    • @obi-wan-jacobi840
      @obi-wan-jacobi840 Před rokem +6

      I think defending Skyrim from the Thalmor wouldn’t be as hard as you’re making it out to be. As other comments have stated it’s in a very defensible position surrounded by mountains. Plus we’ve seen that it can be done through the example of the Redguards in Hammerfell. However, the loss of Skyrim will most likely result in the Empire being too weak to resist the Thalmor. The massive loss of Nord recruits and supplies from Skyrim would severely weaken the Legion if it came to a second Great War.

      Ulfric or the Dragonborn should lead the Empire

    • @filipvadas7602
      @filipvadas7602 Před rokem +10

      @@GenBrony you're assuming the Aldmeri Dominion would opt for standard warfare. They're a race of Elves talented in magic.
      An asset the Nords under Ulfric would scorn as the tactic of "milk drinkers"
      Plus, its not a question if Skyrim could be defended but for *how long?*
      Skyrim *greatly* relied on the economy and trade the Empire brought in and if they're cut off, Skyrim as a whole could very well face an economic collapse that would take *years* to solve.
      All the Aldmeri Dominoon would have to do is either:
      A) Turn the impoverished mob *against* Ulfric and the Jarls that support him with the numerous spies they have.
      B) Just wait it out. The High Elves can live *hundreds* of years. Just wait until Ulfric and many of his supporters die of old age and watch as the younger, more gullible and ambitious Jarls and/or High King replace them and pledge their loyalty to improve their own positions.

    Alredy commented, but I nust realised how ironic Astrid's downfall is. She spends the entire questline admonishing the Dark Brotherhood of old. How their tradition and inability to change lead them to the sorry state they are in now.
    But as the story progresses we see that Astrid herself has also become comftorable in her complacency ,to the point that she *fears* change. To the point that she fears *you!*
    Leading to her drastic actions and ,poetically, her very nearly *fully* destroying the Brotherhood with the same flaw she criticised.

    My biggest issue with the Companions quest is that the Silver Hand are just glorified bandits with Silver weapons.
    In my opinion, the Vigilants of Stendar should’ve been the antagonists for the Companions. At least their “faction” had motivation for elimination of werewolves, since they’re technically Daedric thanks to Hircine.
    Additionally, you could’ve had the options of joining the Vigilants after finding out that the Companions were werewolves, and fighting on their side to eliminate them from Whiterun.

  • @jo-cleetushazelscreetch1301

    The most ironic part about the Thieves Guild questline in Skyrim is that the Grey Fox originally found the Thieves Guild and built it's entire foundation upon the Grey Cowl that was originally stolen from Nocturnal herself. He never actually worshiped the Daedra himself. The whole Nightingale thing in Skyrim with worshiping Nocturnal contradicts what originally happened in the Thieves Guild questline in Oblivion.
    So with that in mind, you can't really blame why Mercer Frey decided to betray the guild. The Thieves Guild in Oblivion was all about the Robinhood-like philosophy of stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. The Thieves Guild in Skyrim is a mafia-like organized crime syndicate who has no problem taking bribes to keep people like Maven Black-Briar in power in the city in Riften meanwhile the Jarl is completely irrelevant.
    There's good evidence to support this like that one mission where you break into Mercer's house in Riften where you can find Chillrend (a weapon that's also in Oblivion) and a stone bust of the Grey Fox himself. So with this in mind, you can say that Mercer was a big admirer of the Grey Fox and was only following in his footsteps.
    Then the irony gets even worse after you kill Mercer and retrieve the Skeleton key off his corpse. Im sure that 99% of players never actually complete the questline because the trade-off for turning in the skeleton key isn't nearly as good as the key itself. Nocturnal must suck as a god if her artifacts create a massive loophole that she can't even control herself.

    • @DonMadruga72
      @DonMadruga72 Před rokem +5

      I always return the Skeleton Key. First, because I want to complete the Quest regardless of the price. Second, because I like being invisible. Third, because screwing around with a Daedra after you've pledged your soul to him is a problem.
      And actually, I like this Thieves' Guild better than this one from Oblivion. Robin Hood? This is false, it does not exist. Thieves want their own good, so because of that I prefer those more selfish style of Skyrim. Furthermore, it is the perfect Guild for a Daedra revered Bosmer Vampire to lead. Oh, that was a great gameplay that one.

But for real they could have given so much more to these factions, and had the other side factions actively affect and alter the course of the civil war and it skirmishes. Like say if you choose to join the Were wolf cult and actively encourage it's growth, and maybe I don't know become Hercines champion or userper and join the Storm Cloaks they could get occasional "allies" or you might werewolf/bear lead raids of beasts attacking Legion camps and patrols at night. An in reflex the Legion starts using, or hiring Silver Hand mercenaries, weapons, and Wolf hunters to go on purges.
