- The wheel and momentary button on the MS-20 mini can do a huge variety of things. Here, Korg's Rich Formidoni shows you how to assign vibrato depth to the wheel, and use the button for a quick pitch bend.

The number of new users of the MS-20 series is still increasing. This video is still valuable know-how 👍 I respect you!
Keep going with these, the MS20 is an unusual synth with a lot of interesting features people don't make the most of. The VCA on the patch panel is the only section I find hard to get my head around so thanks for the demo.
I picked up one of these bad boys six weeks ago, and today is the first time having a go at it. I guess it's gonna be a long road ahead! lol thanks for the upload!
Thank you, this was exactly what I was looking for! You guys rule.
I am a serious Korg fan.
have watched quite some korg demo videos, Rich is really cool
That was really helpful, thanks man. Patch bay is a bit daunting.
This is a sick patch !!
Great demonstration.
These are excellent, please keep it up. Loving it.
awesome! I was wondering what to do with that button thingy.
Great informal video. Please upload more for the ms20 Korg
Thanks, keep these tutorials coming, please!!
NICE. Great way of getting pitch smears in when the wheel's already been assigned, and lucky for me, I love the upward bends as a contrast to most wind instruments, which can usually only smear a half-step downward. Awesome for fusion jazz sounds alongside a piano.
I do feel like the momentary button is perhaps the least-explored and utilized feature of the control/bay section, partly due to its being an unfamiliar design next to modern wheel/strip setups. And that's a strong selling point right there. I've done the button thru S/H glissando thing with a delay pedal for some seeerrriooouusslly cool trippy effects, but would love to discover more. I know I'm missing a lot still.
But next, I may see what trouble I can get into running the phones out into the VCA, then out to...somewhere...with wheel or button control. The possibilities are so endless with this thing.
great demo and inspiration!
Good info! Heck if I would figure that out on my own. Getting my ms20 today I realized just how little I actually know about analog synthesis, despite years and years of using "analog" plugins. Doing these patches is a start at least ;)
very helpful, thanx!!
Super helpful. I've had my MS-20 mini for a week, and could definitely use some more tips, especially on the patch bay.
Also, could you do a video on sequencing the synth with an external CV unit? (I'm working with an Elektron A4, but i'm sure lots of folks using other gear would be interested.)

GREAT!!!! Thank you so much!!! Good hints!!!
Is there a patch I could set up to use the momentary button as a killswitch?
Dope. THANK YOU
Well that answered some questions I had, thx
If you make the Eg1/ext knob pitch bend up to a whole octave you can basically play almost all West coast 90s hip songs.
I'm looking to get the MS-20 for quite some time because it's such an iconic synth (both sound and looks-wise). But after watching this, I have my doubts. All that just to get the mod and pitch wheel working? And not even 100% working? I mean the mod wheel is triggered only at 50% and above and the knob only goes one way + or - pitch? And you used half the patch bay just for that. I know limitations are often a good thing, but that's a bit too much. A bit disappointing really.
genios !
I need it.
Cooool. Can I sync a Korg ms20 mini with a Moog DFAM?
AdrianVino You can if you have an external sequencer. That’s what I do. Idk what else you would sync the DFAM to on the ms-20 other than a sequencer.
Though you could use the patch bay to affect the sound of the DFAM. czcams.com/video/ruhFBWmuNbU/video.html
Moar!
wow
its weird. when plugging everything, my mod wheel only works going up but not down. is there an issue with mine??
I realize your post was two years ago but for what it's worth... the mod wheel is scaling the gain of the amplifier (VCA) that is boosting the signal. Since the mod wheel is +/- 5 volts with zero being in the middle position, of course it would only work after crossing that zero point. You can't negatively amplify something and expect a signal.
@@CharlesFerraro 5 years later and um. They programmed an entire half of a wheel to do nothing? Crazy lol
@@xChillDudex no you could patch it into pitch and bring the pitch down for example. Or cutoff position etc.
I don't get why the modwheel is patched to the VCA if you wanna modulate the pitch of the sound. "Inject the controller to the chain". Why through the VCA? VCO is at the start of the Chain. The VCA is after the VCO if we follow the diagram on the Synth itself. It is, in fact, absolutely last in the chain after both the filters.
How is the amplifier in that case injecting itself back to the VCO?
Why aren't the modwheel going into the VCO as on just about every other Synthesizer?
On most it is prepatched anyway (even for many semi-modulars)
The VCO is responsible for the pitch and the VCA is responsible for the volume, the loudness of the sound. (since it is only an amplifier having nothing to do with the pitch). And it comes AFTER the VCO...
So why the strange stops (by patches) at the VCA for things like this?
Trying this right now. Does not work. The mod wheel does what it should, but that button does nothing.
make sure your knobs match his, like enveloper gen 1
I had this problem and it turned out to be the delay knob. Make sure that’s turned all the way down.
