  • The first XV's of New Zealand College's have produced some of the biggest names in the game. Here we take a look at some of the highlights of three players that attracted the attention of the global rugby world.
    Sevu Reece who now plays on the wing for the All Blacks and two powerhouses that changed codes and pursued rugby league stardom in Konrad Hurrell and Solomone Kata.

    I remember being a junior in high school and you'd hear whispers about grammar and how they got an import from Tonga, seemed like everyone was talking about Konrad and how good he was back then.

    Sevu has gone way faster since he moved to the wing. He’s different runner than he was in the midfield.

      Nah i dont its that i just think when in the midfield theres not much space to show your speed your either just a crash baller in a tight window or a distributor can’t really show your pace at 12

    Sam Tuitupou comes to mind as a school midfielder that absolutely dominated. It’s too bad his playing style wasn’t appreciated till after he moved to England.

    When we were young there was a center similar to these guys who I used to watch. His name was George Leaupepe - dude was a beast at school.

    I know Dan Carter got all the accolades after High school but Sam Tuitupou was the best player back in that generation. Those idiots at the Blues had him playing crash-ball rugby when he was way more skillful than that.

      It kinda worked for the Blues game pattern in those days. The game revolved around Carlos Spencer and the flyers outside of him-Howlett, Rico Gear, Joe Rok, Rupeni and Mils. They need just need front foot ball and they can finish the rest. Sam was only used to crash the ball because the skill set of other backs wasn’t as good as they are now. Wayne Smith said that when they took over the ABs 2004, most players couldn’t pass left and right.

    I wish they had footage of Lesley Vainikolo when he was playing schoolboy footy. Faster than Doug Howlett and Built like a Sh!t Brick house and that was his physique in high school.

      Man I remember during school, there were a few names that were going around at the time to watch out for, Lauitiiti, Ai'i, Mapasua,Vanikolo,Tuitupou just to name a few....Tuitupou was great with the ball, but was a real bad ass on defence, defence is probably what Tuitupou has over these 3 during his high school days, and he was alot smaller...

    Kata, hurrell & laumape are all similar to me. Height, size, age, strength, speed, play style are all similar. Not to mention they're all of tongan heritage & all played for the warriors once 💀 but only kata & laumape made the switch union. I wish hurrell made the switch aswell but allg

      Quite glad Hurrell stayed playing rugby league. His crashball style running sideways and straight would not have translated well in professional rugby union where they enjoy kicking duals scrumming and line outs.
      Better to stay in Professional Rugby League where he helped make history 👌🏾

      Dont agree hes the "only centre" that runs sideways. He can run sideways all he wantz because he makes up for it and then some when he runs it straight.
      Fair point he does that fairly often. He also runs over people and scores tries other centres cant score fairly often too.

      He was no where to be seen. I watched the game where AG vs WC played at AG homeground Hurrell was running through their backline while Fekitoa was just walking with a ball in hand on the sideline. Dont know if he wasn't selected to be on the team that day or he was injured.

      @@Maximus-hi5ht the game the week before, the flanker for Rotorua boys blind shot him about 5 seconds after the pass and he was out due to concussion. But he carved teams up when he did play. I guess coz he came from Tonga didn’t play as many years as these blokes

      You can always rely on someone bringing up ethnicity.It's all so..... predictable.
      This is how it's supposed to work - can't p[ick anyone with a brown skin ( incl Maoris) because,well,they're not "real kiwis".And anyone caucasian playing rugby - they generally have british ancestry,so they have to make themselves available for the home unions.
      Kind of thins out NZ's talent pool,I guess.
