      What are the best settings for speed, at the AX86U?
      I have that router. I do have 600/40Mbps now, but next month I'll have 1000/1000Mbps.
      Using 2,5Gbit port as WAN and I've got 160Mhz enabled. My notebook with AX201 has linkspeed 2400 :)

    • @pauldittus
      @pauldittus  Před 3 lety +2

      @@wvvliet86 Nice! That's a huge improvement in the upload. So I tried a couple things, but I would start by turning off the QoS and seeing how that impacts your speed tests. I found that without it on I would get better results on my AX86U. Also if you're in an area with a bunch of wifi connections in close proximity (aka your neighbors), I would download a wifi analyzer to see which channels are less polluted and you can switch to the clearest channel available. Make sure that you're connected to the 5Ghz connection for faster speeds. You can check your client's connection type (5Ghz vs 2.5Ghz) in the app. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers 🙌

      Would a router like this be worth it if you're directly connected to the router? Or is this more for wireless wifi connection?

      @@tonyshoulders_ Hey Tony! Welcome to the channel fam 🙌 Great question. If you're looking for just a wired connection, you might not need wifi capabilities. If so, you can just get a wired router which I imagine is cheaper. That said if you're looking for something with both wifi and wired connection these are great options to consider. Hope that helps 👍

    I've been running the 82u, and 86u here as a mesh in my 2br apt lol. I have the 82u setup as the main, with the 86u being the spoke, using a wired backhaul. Lots of interference in apartments of course, particularly on 2.4ghz. I highly recommend the wifi analyzer app for channel tuning. Either way, mine has ran great for about 2yrs now. I still don't feel the need to upgrade. Great products. Cheers.

    Good basic speed test, but it didn't really tell us differences between those 3 routers and if the most expensive one is worth it... Speed of WIFI is aspect too, but it doesn't have to be the most important one. I believe if someone is choosing router, he is interested also in features, customization, options for 3rd party firmware, speed of cpu and amount of RAM etc.

We don't want to be "buffering" or look funky during climaxing if you get my drift. You should've saw one live upload we did a while back. OMG! It froze up when faces were being made. Sorry but didn't the 58u perform the best at distance? You said to not get that if you want distance??
    Also if you're going to do a test, do it fairly. I consistently get 700mb on my 58u at close range and 500 2 levels away in my house. You need to split the 2.4 and 5ghz channels and use a device capable of attaining the top speeds of the router

    • @pauldittus
      @pauldittus  Před 3 lety +1

      Good points, Ian. You are 100% correct that the 58U performed the best at the furthest distance in the test. And yes, it would be good to test the 2.5 vs 5 GHz performance separately. Additionally, I will say my testing environment in an apartment with competing wifi signals probably isn't the best for finding the ideal results of an individual router. However, it does give a similar area to compare results of routers in a real life environment.
      Thanks again for bringing this to my attention. Have a great week friend 🙌

    • @Ian-ev5tg
      @Ian-ev5tg Před 3 lety +2

      @@pauldittus no worries. I myself live in a detached house with little interference from other wifi signals. I set this router up and haven't done any tweaking other than splitting the channels. In fact it's one of the main reasons I ditched the bt router as they stopped the ability to split the channels and they also don't provide WiFi 6 routers on the fttp 1gb package. The first thing anyone should do is split the channels. Choose which one is best for the device you're using. I agree, it's probably not the best all rounder for everyone. But when I was shopping around, I wanted the rt ax88u but it was way too expensive and way too overkill for my needs. I found this to be the best compromise for spacial footprint and performance. My galaxy tab s7 constantly achieves 7 to 800mb upstairs, which is one room up and 1 room over, always shows its connected at 1.2gbps and although it's not the 980mbps I get on ethernet, it's pretty damn good compared to the bt smart hubs 230mbpa in the same room.

      Hey friend! Great question. I haven't heard of the Netduma R3 before. When you say custom router are you talking about RGB or running custom firmware? If firmware, I don't believe that the RT-AX82U supports the popular Asuswrt-Merlin firmware. That said, I am using the native firmware that comes with the router. Since I have never tested the Netduma R3 I probably can't speak much about it. The RT-AX82U was my personal favorite when reviewing these particular routers.

    I'm confused why you say upgrade to the 82U or 86U if you want more range, but your testing shows the best speed with the 58U at the longest range. Does it or does it not have better or equal range? Your limited testing does not identify that. Is that statement based off marketing or actual testing?

    • @pauldittus
      @pauldittus  Před 11 měsíci

      Hey friend! Great questions.
      You are absolutely correct that my tests are limited. It's been 2 years since I had access to the routers so unfortunately I can't test them easily. There are definitely gaps in what I tested and my testing methods. I also didn't even show what I changed to make the speed improvements.
      First I will say, all 3 routers from my memory performed very well. I believe the primary thing I did to the 86U that helped it's performance was turn off the QoS feature. This change sped up the router in some of my testing.
      I can't remember if I tested the distance much after that change so again this could be a gap in testing. The other element that could be an issue here is whether or not certain router distance tests were done on the 2.4Ghz vs 5Ghz band. For example at the distance test if the 58U was using the 2.4Ghz band and the others were still on the 5Ghz I could see that impacting the results greatly.
      I apologize for not having a more definitive answer. I want to thank you for your thoughtful comment.
      With all that said, I want to welcome to the channel 👍

    Thanks but not thst Insightful og a review tbh. All the asus measure the same ping but you sorta claim that the extra 100mpbs speed makes the more expensive routers better for gaming. This is not the case especially with speeds well above 400 mbps. No mention of other features or measurements. This is a basic wifi test, which is fine, but it is not a review of the routers.

      Hello my friend! You bring up good points. This was my first video on the channel so definitely areas for improvement. I had to answer many questions regarding this in the comments as a result.
      Regarding the tweaks for the results: I tried a couple things, but I would start by turning off the QoS and seeing how that impacts your speed tests. I found that without it on I would get better results on my AX86U. Also if you're in an area with a bunch of wifi connections in close proximity (aka your neighbors), I would download a wifi analyzer to see which channels are less polluted and you can switch to the clearest channel available. Make sure that you're connected to the 5Ghz connection for faster speeds in close proximity. You can check your client's connection type (5Ghz vs 2.5Ghz) in the app.

Right after turning on the router I sometimes had to toggle my wifi on my client on and off to connect to the 5 Ghz. Also if you can you might consider enabling DFS channels in the WiFi settings.

      Hey friend, I'm trying to remember, but I'm pretty sure just turning off the QOS setting after I reset the router did the trick. Some other ideas:
      I would suggest using a WiFi Analyzer to see which channels are polluted in your area. Then select a channel that isn't as saturated in your area. Also as noted in one of the tests, make sure you're on the 5 Ghz connection as that will give you the fastest speeds when in close proximity. Right after turning on the router I sometimes had to toggle my wifi on my client on and off to connect to the 5 Ghz. Also if you can you might consider enabling DFS channels in the WiFi settings.

People tend to get caught up on speed but stability is the most important thing on a network. Low ping, eliminating bottlenecks in networking setups and eliminating bufferbloat are way more important in my opinion. Thanks for sharing friend! I know another person here also recommended the 82u. Plus you get those amazing RGB lights which are epic. Definitely a great option.

    Can the ax82u use merlin?

      Unfortunately, it is not listed on the Merlin website. That said, I did find a forum which was pointing to a GitHub with something that might work. I would make sure it’s legit before downloading though 😊: www.snbforums.com/threads/any-merlin-love-for-the-asus-rt-ax82u.79316/

      Hey friend! Maybe in the future I can review mesh routers. I like how with the ASUS routers you create a mesh in the future with them. What are you looking at getting? XT8?

      @@pauldittus I kno someone with a xt8. Though its bit pricy, but the wifi works pretty well. It has only 3 lan ports though. If you have a big house, I think the xt8 is cool, especially the design.

      I had used my hotspot prior so it had been a long time since I had upgraded my wireless router. So this upgrade was a huge improvement from my Wireless N router.
