  • Trying to film bats at dusk is nearly impossible. Armed with an ordinary camera, with wide angle to let as much light in as possible and a couple of trail cameras to see if it was possible. Not really. The first was that the bats fly so fast they do not activate the sensor of the ir cameras. Second is the even with an ordinary camera pushed to the limit, there is a lot of interferance. Noise being one thing and the other thing that you can't see with the naked eye are the insects. Those can be seen as fuzz and snow on the trail cams. The second time I went out I moved/shook the trail cameras to start them up and set the time to 10 minutes. One cam failed and only recorded 20 seconds and the other one only recored 10 mins twice and the placement should not have been looking out onto the pond. I should have left it pointing at the wall as the ir light was reflected. Now I know that for next time. Wind and bats don't mix. The first time they came out before the street light came on it and the weather was slightly overcast, with a bit of sun and no wind, but I had not observed them to see exactly where to point the camera. The second time I went out it was so windy I didn't think they would come out at all and it was completely overcast and they came out after the street lights came on. The sound is from a Heterodine bat detector. .. and for the most is Daubenton's bat, but you can also hear a pippistrelle. It will take some rethinking for the next time.
