this is so uch easier than pulling out tank. My truck has hard time starting when temps drop, plus my guage has been a bit unrealiable, need to change the fuel pump. uugh but its -5 right now so waiting for a nice window to do this job lol. this is a much better process. well explained. thank you.

I’ve got a 2000 s10 that’s having the same problem. Changed the fuel filter. Truck still won’t start. Starts when priming the air intake. So I guess now it’s fuel filter time. I’m going to cut an access panel on mine, there’s so much rust under there I’m afraid to try and take the bed off. Damn road salt eats metal. Thanks for this video, it’s a big help for those of us who aren’t experts. Cross your fingers the new fuel pump does it.

If the pump is shorter, the fuel pickup filter sets higher in the tank or further from the bottom leaving fuel in the tank when empty. How much fuel capacity do you lose? Thanks for the video.. Very helpful!

Great video. I ordered a pump and it came with no instructions. So I didn't know about the pressure switch change out or the wiring diagram change. But after watching your video and a few others I about got it figured out what I am going to have to do.Thanks so much. Like you said if you let these trucks set things go bad. I could see my old fuel pump was really rusty and it made a loud sound like it was plugged and it was. Possibly clean it out and it might work fine. Looks like it had been changed out some time back. I put like 5 cans of cleaner in the tank and every day it was some what better. But ordered a pump anyway so I am changing it out. Looks like the materials the pumps are made of are not holding up to today's fuels. I pressure tested it and it would only hold 20 lbs and when you started it dropped all pressure and wouldn't stay running. Got it off an old man who could no longer drive. So this truck had been sitting 6 years. I put a battery in it, started it, drove it 100 miles and then the fuel pump I think is clogged. When I get the wiring change figured out it should drive great. Only has a 120,000 original miles on it. 2003 v6 s10. Nice little truck.

Some don't have the snap ring but a twisting push down locking style.
And that type was incredibly difficult to get back on. Trying to push it down into place and twist but it needs alot of force to push and twist you'll need a big screwdriver or prybar chisel and a small sledge to try to hit it the same time.
Be thankful if yours does have a snap

I use 2 1 inch ratchet straps and an engine hoist, hook the straps crisscross on the lower loop style tie downs, keep the hook on your hoist close to the bar. Drop the crossed straps onto the middle of the hoist hook, jack it up and off. Move the bed back and set on bumper. Works like a charm, oh, don't forget to take the fuel tank hose off and unplug your taillights.

Had NO idea how to replace the fuel pump on my '03 V6/4.3 extended cab w/478k miles. Garage quoted me $1200. Saw this video. Took the bed bolts out (left the L/R back ones LOOSE but on). Lifted the bed front up as high as I needed. Switched out the old w/the new from Rock Auto. $75 later and it's back on the road. Took at the most an hour. SCHEESCH - WAY TOO EASY! Made me think about something else...I need to find a new garage. WAAAAAAAAAAAY overpriced or obviously they don't know how to do it (Mr. GoodWrench....yeah right).

Hey bud I just changed mine. It aint that easy , not only do you have to jack up the bed about 20 inches more, and the fuel pump you pulled looks exactly like the one I just installed. I paid almost $200 with tax for that damn thing. I can only tell since you din't bother to put the gas cap back on before your crazy driving the mud and dust did screw it up, much less pass state vehical inspections.
What ever ! I did find lowering the bed down onto the fuel pump really helps seat the bid O-ring after it's oiled up.
Some people just cut a hole in the bed and weld it up after.

Rock auto has 10 different ones to choose from like the OEM Delco and Bosch and the cheaper ones.
The Bosch is original equipment. That one is on amazon right now for $87 bucks. I found it for $80 on ebay. The Bosch is the best bang for your buck its original equipment and its selling cheap right now.

FYI. I just got a complete tank with straps, sending unit, and fuel pump for $7 more than just the sending unit and pump from Rock Auto. Grab some new Dorman bolts and clip nuts for the rear strap from a local parts store, and you can avoid needing to boil your tank.

  • @had2galsinthebooth
    @had2galsinthebooth Před 5 lety

That pump doesn't fit my crew cab 4x4. I wish it did because it's about 1/4 the cost of a Delco to fit the new tank. The new tank to fit the crew cab is well over $100 too. I'm over $300 buying parts myself then will have to pay the mechanic when they arrive. Got a gas leak when it's full, been having power issues on hills, and now hard starting issues, also sometimes a loud buzz from the pump... I'm debating whether to cancel the Delco and get a cheaper one because suppliers sometimes charge the higher amount but send a cheap part anyway and I heard Delco is now made in Asia anyway, why pay $200 for a "fake" pump when that extra could go to the mech? The old pickup has already cost me alot this year, maybe I should just make it a light duty plow truck and move on.

Also a Crew 4x4 here. It runs fine, but two issues. No tank pressure so trips smog code (can't smog truck) and gauge drops to zero, then back to normal every few minutes. No idea where leak is, but figure change pump, etc. while at it. What did you end up doing?

Change the fuse that's why when changing out the pump you must first disconnect battery.

fuel pump works, but gas gauge is erratic, is there a specific part I need to replace on pump?

Probably the sending unit, but it is usually part of the entire assembly like he removed in this video

This job can be done with out lifting the bed. Did it by myself on 03 ZR2. Just make sure tank is as empty as you can get. There are a few testy items that are positioned from the top at factory but with some perseverance you can do it all from underneath. Going back together is easy. I would do it all from underneath only if I ever had to do it again.
