    Honestly I just got to know about the YN flashes and was trying to figure out which one does what and what I should get, Your review was the most comprehensive and the most informative, I learned more from your 15 min video than 2 hours worth of reading. Thank You!

    I just got a couple of these and the trigger. A friend of mine got a set about a year ago and has been using them pretty heavily since and no issues so I thought why not. They're more solid than expected, though my Canon flash units are a little more substantial (as you'd hope considering the price difference). So far so good. They're cheap enough that they can just be replaced at short notice unlike the Canon equivalent. I can get 6 of these bad boys for the price of ONE of the Canon ones with the current pricing in the UK. Throw some in a bag with the trigger, some spare batteries and a couple of light stands and you have a pretty sweet, small, mobile and cheapish lighting set up. I'll grab these when I don't want to risk smashing up my expensive Canon ones.

    In the 18 months since this was uploaded Yongnuo seem to have come a long way with the yn685 and yn622tx-c transmitter. I really like them now and have had no issues with the gaskets, which I believe was quite a common problem. What in really wanting to comment on though is how much I really like your style of photography, looks really easy laid back style, which we all know is the hardest style to get right. Good stuff all round.

      +Steve R Yes and also super speed sync of 1/8000. Not sure if that's just a term that Yongnuo have made up

    If you add any modifiers to the speedlights, definitely consider the Canons with the locking mechanism. I recently added the Rogue Flashbender XP Pro with the larger reflecter/speedbox/grid and the only way to use it is have the YN speedlite point straight up.

    Thank you Tim for sharing your feedback about the brand new YN600. I was curious to know why every of them were out of stock, seems like I got my answer...Now I'm just hesitating waiting for it to come back or buy the good old YN568EX-II.

    Yaay for the 468-II - that's what I have now. :) Been working for a year now, I shoot a lot of nightlife stuff (clubs etc) and it's been great. I think the 568-II is next.

    Hi Tim! Great review! Thanks for that! I needed the info regarding YN600's af assist light and I haven' t been able to find one. That's a shame that YN didn't copy the canon assist light as well. I currently own yn568exII and its af assist make it difficult to use at a wedding reception as compared to original C580EX. As you said the cross shaped laser beam is misaligned. I've hoped they have changed it in YN600.
    I currently use two sets of YN-622c at a reception but I found them being unreliable especially when I squat down and try to shoot upwards. The height difference combined with dancing people in between me and the receiver makes it impossible to trigger (it triggers when I stand up). I tested it out in the open and the vertical distance doesn't matter when there are no obstacles.
    At last reception I had the yn622 receiver freeze on me twice (It was switched on but didn't trigger) I had to power it off and on again. It drove me crazy!
    It seems for complete reliability I would need two Canon 600ex-rt for on camera (I use two bodies) and one or two remote yn600. It's a shame it's a really costly option ;)
    Is there any alternative to yn622 and yn600? Did you experience any of the similar issues with yn622?

    Got mine today. Received the 1/13 batch, so far so good. The rubber boot stays on and mounts semi tight. While on, it makes a weird noise like a cricket tapping its feet rapidly or it is running around inside. Pulled 2 feet away and the noise is gone. Firmware 1 2 3.

    Hi Tim,
    Thank you for the most comprehensive review of the Yongnuo flash and trigger.
    I am really satisfied with my YN-E3-RT flash trigger and YN600. they work great.
    The only issue I've noticed is that a selection wheel of the trigger is pretty tough and sometimes it gets flimsy so that it's not to easy to operate with one hand.
    So, my question is if you have had any of these issues and do you think it's a really big deal?
    Thank you for your advice.

  • @stevenvanzoelen
    @stevenvanzoelen Před 8 lety

    The Yongnuo600EX-RT has second curtain problems in wireless mode triggered by the YN-E3-RT. Longer then 2 seconds isn't possible. But my Canon600EX-RT works fine in 2e curtain mode.

  • @cristianmorinico3311
    @cristianmorinico3311 Před 9 lety

    Got mine two days ago and just started having issues. The AF assist beam stopped working, then the flash and the shutter curtain didn't match at 1/30th second ( only the bottom of the frame was exposed to the flash), then the flash didn't want to fire at all. Sometimes when starting it, the flash zooms in and out for several seconds. Also the Custom Settings (Fn) don't automatically save. Their website states" Settings Save Automatically, Supports Custom Settings (Fn)
    The parameters on the flash will automatically save when the flash turned off; the users can customize setting the flash function as needed."
    Another thing is that sellers on ebay claim that the YN-600ex-rt can be used as a master to trigger the following- YONGNUO: YN568EX II, YN568EX, YN565EX, YN500EX, YN560EX, YN510EX 580EX II, 580EX, 430EX II. This is not true. The manual say nothing about triggering those flashes and I've also tried.
    I will be returning this item to China even though I bought it in the U.S..

    Nice video Tim. Sometimes we don't need all the crazy specs about a product but just a real life honest opinion on why you'd want one over the other.
    Curious if you've used any pocket wizards with the YNs? If they are basically generic clones I'm assuming (but don't want to risk it) that the FlexTT5 and MiniTT1 controllers work the same? I'm thinking about hyper sync and getting passed the 1/200th and 1/250th limits on flash syncs.

    Hey Tim, thanks for the video.
    (Maybe a silly) question: If I have the Canon Speedlite 600 mounted on my 7D, and a Yongnuo 600EX-RT off-camera, will the Canon 600 trigger the YN600EX, with no help from any transmitters/receivers? Or other way around? I think you do say the wireless TTL in the Yongnuos is enough - just want to make sure.

    • @Timkylephotographyblog
      @Timkylephotographyblog  Před 9 lety

      Yes, they both work the same way and are interchangeable. Put one in master mode, and the other in slave (wireless master) and they will trigger each other.

    I have 4 yn685s that I trigger with the yn622tx-c, but I power these with the Godox PB960 and the PB820. They have splitters so I can also power some cheap Androer Speedlight that have external power ports and a multi mode. I mainly do still life in a studio with my strobes, I can’t do weddings due to health reasons. I was going to upgrade to a couple of the yn686 with the lithium batteries so I don’t have to carry any spare batteries at all and I can shoot all day without changing anything. A guy selling yn686 on eBay said that the E3 trigger wouldn’t fire my yn685s, but you sound like you trigger the yn622 transceivers with the E3. As I said I use the yn622tx-c as the recommended transceiver for the yn685s and that is about 10% of an upgrade from the yn622. The yn622 is compatible with the yn685 but it now sounds that the E3 works on the same wavelength, have I been told wrong? Because I’ve ordered 2 more yn685s and another PB820 with a splitter instead. My major beef with Yongnuo is all the different trigger systems they seem to have that aren’t compatible with each other, the yn603 for example works with nothing else and I just keep two of these in my bag for landscapes with my Canon 430 ex II. I wish I’d gone with Godox now as they don’t seem to have these issues.Great video, a very objective review and they do seem to have problems with their gaskets as I’ve lost one off one of my yn685s and when they come off they are almost impossible to get back on. The yn600 II has now been released but I don’t know when you video was made and I’m not going discard all this writing with all this complicated tale again! Thank you for the video and your honest appraisal.

    By the way, you might want to consider trying the new Shanny flashes. Their version of the 600EX-RT is going to be announced in about a month. I've tested their current flash and it seems pretty great. They also have an E3 transmitter and it seems like it has more features than then YN. For a company that has only existed for a few months, they seem pretty promising. Worth a check.

    Did anyone figure out how to set the cutom settings for 'the select dial button' on Yongnuo 600ex-rt flash?
    I know it is somehow possible to custom set it up in a way that you can TURN the select dial button (the little wheel in the center) and manually change the flash exposure compensation, WITHOUT having first to push the small button above (top row, 3rd from the left, that is the one left from the word CLEAR).
    This would really speed up my workflow. Thank you!

    Hi! Thank you so much for the great advice.
    I currently have a Canon 600EXRT, and a pair of the Yongnuo RF 603 non ttl triggers.
    I need a second flash for my portraits and was wondering if I should supplement my current setup with
    1.) The YN-E3-RT and a YN 568EXII flash unit.(to be coupled with my RF-603 trigger)
    OR
    2.) The YN-E3-RT and a YN 6000EXRT?
    I don't particularly like the idea of having to buy additional receivers and subsequently more batteries to worry about.
    Also, in option 1, will I be able to control the group settings of the 568EXII from the E3-RT?(I doubt it since, they aren't TTL. But let me know.)
    Thanks in advance.

    Great video! Thanks for uploading it. I'm a bird photographer and I'm looking for some flash units that allow me taking high speed photos of small birds. I want an Rt System so I don't need receivers in each unit. As you propose in the video, I'm thinking in getting a Canon 600ex rt as my main unit. Also I'm thinking in getting the canon Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT and three more (economic) flash units. Do you know if i can use the canon transmitter to control the Yongnuo YN600EX-RT Flash units? Will it synchronize for high speed photography with the canon unit and the canon transmitter? how about the new canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT instead of the yongnuo units? Sorry for making so many questions! thank you very much!

      dan kinzie Yes and yes. If you set your master to grp mode you can turn the flash power off for group a (flash on hotshoe). Then you can turn groups b through d to manual or TTl mode and adjust exp comp and power separately. This is huge! You can use it as a trigger without firing the flash. It can be done within the flash menu. I have the flash menu saves as a favorite in the Canon menus for this reason.

    • @TalesOfWar
      @TalesOfWar Před 8 lety

      Simple. It's using the radio when off camera. It isn't when it's on camera. One of the reasons the Canon versions cost so much more (other than being first party and they love to price things higher lol) is they tend to use higher grade, more efficient components. The radios use less power on the Canon units.
      I highly recommend you invest in a few packs of Eneloop Pro's and a good charger if you haven't already. They're fantastic batteries and are made specifically for the kind of high power drain you experience when using camera flashes. They have a really good recycle rate too. The regular no pro Eneloop's are also brilliant for using in your triggers and stuff. Well worth the investment. I can't say I've had a single bad experience with those batteries and I've been using them since they were made by Sanyo (before Panasonic bought them).

      I experienced the same thing. Fresh batteries in one day, left overnight, next day batteries drained completely. At the rate I was going through batteries, and the less than reliable functioning of the yongnuo's, I could have purchased a canon 600, regardless of how overpriced I think they are. At least the thing works when you need it too. Best option is to try to find the canon versions used. If you are getting paid for job, do not risk using the yongnuo's.

For this reason I was looking to buy YN-600 but from your review the AF don't seem to be great. Do you know if I could used instead the YN-E3-RT with my YN-560 III and resolve the issue with low light ?

      @g0at3 Před 9 lety +1

      They are still going strong and perform well. I would have sold my 568, and bought a 2nd 600. You would have 2 flashes with built in reciever and transmitter and you wouldn't need a trigger.

But from here on out when I add a speedlight to my system it will be a yn600. Down the rd I will get the controller for that system. Then I won't have to carry the extra triggers/batteries when not using monolights.

      I feel about the same. They are nowhere near the build quality and longevity of the canons... However they are also nowhere near the price. I purchased 4 of the yongnuo 600ex approx. 1 1/2 years ago thinking for the price it was worth the risk. Sadly I experienced problems immediately, with the units overheating in very limited use. Not all of them, 2 suffered from overheating problems and the other 2 would just shut down after limited use (and by that I mean less than 50 pops, at 1/4 to 1/2 power). I stopped using them with clients as they simply unreliable. I tried them again last night with another client, and now all four suffer from overheating problems. I guess i should be thankful they work at all.
