    That first one is literally a robot chicken! Chickens walk, run, but will also fly a bit to get over things, also they use their wings for quick direction changes when running.

    As a former military type guy I find the potential military application for nano drone swarms terrifying. We could have a 6 man reconnaissance team hiding out keeping an eye on the enemy only to be discovered and attacked by an nano drone swarm armed with micro munitions. The Dronut will be great for Law Enforcement and Fire Departments.

      What you really need for nano-drones is a laser. Have your spinning mirror with laser rangefinder (as with a typical LIDAR set-up) but when it detects something within 10m pulse a more powerful laser in that direction - powerful enough to destroy any sensors or controls on the nano-drone.

    That Leonardo hybrid bipedal drone might have some real application in Mars landers. In the 70s I was on a ship designed to carry that V-bat, too bad we didn't have the technology back then. I can also see immediate tactical applications for the micro drone. We are getting close to that drone in the movie Lexx.

    Appreciate the brief pithy overview. Will check out some links. Takeaway - without GPS, for military use. Oh, the times we live in, seldom bored. Those balloons! Elegant. The ion propulsion, such persistence rewarded in achieving the hopes of sci fi. Exciting times we live in. And privacy, if I was a rich man (cue Fiddler on the Roof) I'd pay for artists to spend some time performing interpretative dance toward intruding drones before opening a skeet shoot or releasing the birds of prey. I hope my few words of manually entered text influences the algorithm in your favour.

    The Microflier has a possible powered version that connects two of the drones to a micro-turbine (basically a jet-engine on a chip, created with the same lithography techniques used to create Micro-Electrical-Mechanical Systems). The two Microfliers would thus spin in opposite directions, giving them the ability to climb about 50ft before the small amount of alcohol fuel is exhausted. But that could allow them a significantly longer “loiter” period, given that the 50ft climb would likely take about 10 to 30 seconds. If you are using them to map an area, or to provide passive sensors that is enough to produce a rather substantial “picture” of the area in question.
    Also, there are other forms of “Blimps” that are neither “Blimp” nor Zeppelin/Dirigible. They are “Semi-Rigid, Variable-Buoyancy (meaning “inflatable/deflatable”), Variable-Geometry (beyond just the inflation/deflation), Vectored-Thrust, Airship/Airplane Hybrids” that are shaped kind of like a fat pancake, rather than the “Sausage” of the Blimp/Dirigible.
    The Shapes also tend to be somewhat triangular, allowing for wings to be deployed when flying as either “Neutrally Buoyant” or as a Heavier-than-Air “Airplane,” that themselves are based upon Goodyear’s Inflataplane technology from the Cold War (but rather than being inflated with air, as the Inflataplane was, these are inflated with Helium or Hydrogen).
    The variations in geometry and buoyancy allow for flight that is far faster than a traditional airship (either Blimp or Dirigible), and capable of speeds equal to that of aircraft when in “Heavier-than-Air Mode.”
    They are built to be VERY high-altitude aircraft, and when some of the technologies mature that are used in the construction of the “Inflatable” portions, it will be possible to use a few “Vacuum-Filled Carbon-Fiber Structures” to create a permanent negative Buoyancy, allowing less Helium or Hydrogen to be used to control the Buoyancy, and thus whether it is an “Airship” or “Airplane..” But that is required to get these into a section of our Atmosphere currently inaccessible to any aircraft we have (at least for any period longer than a few minutes), which is the area of 100km to 150km (between the “Highest an Airplane can fly, and still generate lift, and have enough “Air” to feed the engines,” and the “Lowest that a Spacecraft can “Orbit” without atmospheric drag causing a very rapid “de-orbiting”).
    Aside from replacements for Communication and Spy Satellites (or any kind of Earth-Observation), they also present a platform for launching of Spacecraft that eliminate that first 100 to 150 km, or a platform for Solar Power Generation that eliminates most of the atmosphere between the Solar Panels or Mirrors and the Sun, allowing for vastly higher efficiency.
    Currently the biggest issue with their construction has been the price and material strength. Graphene sheets of up to a meter in size are needed for the gas-cells, and other very exotic materials are used in other parts of the aircraft. Currently most of this kind of Hybrid Airship/Airplane experimentation has been on streamlined Blimps that generate some lift by aerodynamics rather than the gas-cells or bag. But some smaller models have been made that test the viability of each configuration, with nothing yet made (of which I am aware) that is capable of the variable-transformations required for the completed concept.
    The “Lighter-than-Air” variant of those Models can be used already for a very high-altitude Aircraft, where the streamlining and vectored thrust allow for a stability completely lacking in traditional airships.
    But one of the applications that seem to draw the most funding is in a greener alternative to Airline Transportation, where the creation of such airships that can fly at speeds nearly as fast as the existing airliners, but with vastly less fuel, and giving the passengers an amount of space that is impossible in any but the Private Aircraft of Billionaires. And to carry passengers in numbers that no airplane-based airliner could rival. This also creates the possibility of “Air Cruise” industries, where Air Cruise-Liners could be built.
    But, as I mentioned… Currently it is just Drones that are being developed for that technological mix.

    So the last one, The Microflyer, I had to review the footage a few times and am not convinced I saw it _flying._
    I saw it falling, I saw it spinning and I saw what looked like controlled falling, over a vertical wind tunnel type thing (possibly attached to a tether, maybe not) but I didn't see it 'fly'.
    Interesting concept but flight and even controlled flight, I await a better demonstration.

    The real benefit of drones will be the ability to swarm. A single drone with offensive capability is a threat until we learn to counter it. But a swarm with offensive capability can be almost impossible to counter. That's why we leave killer bees alone.

      Jay, I believe the Pentagon stated that this technology is something the US is already figuring out how to make operational. But the interesting point about their statement was that armed drone swarms should be considered a WMD based on the infinite scalability of the destructive power. Theoretically limitless numbers of drones can be sent out to headhunt enemy soldiers, for example. There are a lot of very dark things that are possible with drone swarms.

    • @ddegn
      @ddegn Před 2 lety

      @@sampeythepirate "it's smarter to buy a DJI air unit or Caddx unit"
      The transmitted video Air Units and Caddx devices is not nearly as good as the transmitted video from the FPV drone.
      NURK has made a few videos about the new DJI FPV drone and he states several times the quality is much better with the new drone.
      That said, I still plan to get an Air Unit (or similar) in the near future. I have analog FPV gear but the only digital gear I own is the DJI FPV drone.

    • @sampeythepirate
      @sampeythepirate Před 2 lety +1

      @Duane Degn I guess it depends what you're doing with the system, DJIs' "FPV" drone doesn't rate well with those of us used to flying real FPV racer types etc (mostly due to airframe durability and control interface not camera to be fair) but if you're say into cinematic flying mostly focussed on recorded footage quality etc then I can see the value. From your initial comment I figured maybe you wanted a good live HD system on a quad or fixed wing platform hence suggesting the Caddx gear, I'm running a polar cam with their vista unit it's incredible especially for night flying and having come straight from analogue. I see DJI FPV drone as kinda inaccurately named, it's more like a fast Mavic in terms of what it does well and things like arm durability, ability to replace parts etc.
      Different strokes for different folks and all that.

    • @ddegn
      @ddegn Před 2 lety +1

      @@sampeythepirate "I'm running a polar cam with their vista unit"
      Have you tried any of the other similar cameras? I'm looking get something like the DJI Air Unit but I haven't decided which camera/transmitter system to get. I'm leaning towards something like the original Air Unit since it can record higher quality video onboard. I think some of the Caddx stuff only lets you record via the goggles.
      I'm aware of the downsides of the DFI FPV. I don't fly it the same way I fly my other quads. I'm much more cautious when using the FPV drone. The video quality makes flying the drone a lot of fun. It's just fun fly and look around at things.
      I found the NURK video which discusses the video quality. About 27 minutes and 50 seconds into the video *Everything About The New DJI FPV Drone* you can hear Winston and NURK talk about how much better the video quality is with the new drone.

    Thorough! Nice.
    These things will in fact be.. knat-sized in a couple years, and non-visible in 10.
    The 12" ones could be deployed on the 'Pirates' seizing the tankers.
    As Always.. LOTS of GOOD usage for some. Much nefarious usage by others.
    Thank you.

    Are there any drones that utilise a method of flight seabirds use call “dynamic soaring”.
    This technique derives energy from vertical wind gradients that often exist over open oceans and flat plains.
    This is how seabirds like the Albatross can remain aloft for many months with very little effort. How these birds could do it was a mystery until accurate tracking of their flight path was possible.

    could you dig up some data on the bee sized camera equiped drones apparently used to find bin laden? uk was all promoting that while the usa was busy covering it up. given how long ago it would be good to take a look back on it all.
