    According to Google translate, the footnote for the asterisk translates to: "Optional CX-10G is required"
    Current google searches for icom cx-10g don't reveal anything useful, aside from other articles about the preliminary specs for this rig, haha.

    OK Hayden, very cool.. So what sort of antenna would we use at 5 & 10GHz..? ARe there lots of options - or will it always be a dish?

    • @HamRadioDX
      @HamRadioDX  Před 2 lety +1

      Not sure yet, but for best performance an external dish would be the best. I imagine the 10G unit won't come with an antenna (or it might?) we shall see!

      We would have to step away from the world of wire antennas for sure

  • @kevinkc3onohelijeepworld953

    Think the radio is just a pa then it goes cat cable to tranverters where the rf deck is housed then coax to antenna. I think they did that to lower losses from amp to antenna. Looks like 10w out up to 1.2//5w out on 2.4&5.6//.5 out on 10g is what * means I believe 😉😉exciting to see sum one giving us access to the microwave bands ☺️

    Credit for the innovation. Not sure of the take up though. Currently in my area no one uses 2m, 70cm or 23cm so will be unlikely to use this. I would of thought opening up the 9700 for 138-174 Mhz and 400 to 500 Mhz (maybe a 9710 or something) would be of more use.

    G'day Hayden.
    1st up love your steam last weekend watched "most" of it had to work on Sunday but checked in at 12.45 didn't think that you were going to make it 🙂
    So tonight another great video, as senior Network Comms Engineer & fellow amateur ( VK3ECS ) I have a couple of questions about this radio.
    (A) How is it going to comply with the ACMA DFS act
    Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) and Transmitter Power Control (TPC)
    Where here in Australia where some 5 GHz wireless channels co-exist with some Radar frequencies. Rather than ban WiFi for these frequencies, the ACMA has followed the same principle used in USA and the EU and allowed WiFi to operate on these same frequencies under the limitation that the WiFi gear must have:
    DFS: a mechanism to automatically detect Radar, and move off to a different channel, and
    TPC: a mechanism where the TX power can be reduced at least 6 dB below the maximum permitted.
    (B) What's going to happen to 5.8Ghz PtP Links will this radio have the ability to "crash them" ? & for that matter what about drone use that is also using 5.8Ghz ?.
    ( I'm, also a CASA Licenced commercial Drone Operator )
    (C) Considering that 5GHz spectrum is unlicensed, but is still regulated with TX banned on U-NII-2
    Chnl 52 5260Ghz
    Chnl 56 5280Ghz
    Chnl 60 5300Ghz
    Chnl 64 5320Ghz
    And all the other Chnls / Freq's with Maximum EIRP limits & strict Indoor only use only of U-NII-1
    Chnl 34 5170Ghz
    to
    Chnl 48 5240Ghz
    and U-NII-2E
    Chnl 100 5500Ghz
    to
    Chnl 140 5700Ghz
    What's the chance of this radio getting ACMA approval in Australia any time soon ?.
    Look forward to hopefully seeing you in Nov ( I am trying to rope in some fellow amateurs including my son Tim VK1TTY ) who I believe that you know 🙂
    Keep up the great work 🙂

    @MikeG-js1jt Před rokem

    sure its cool, but the one reason I don't think I'd buy it, is because it really doesn't make itself useful on a "Daily" basis for many simply and sadly because of its low wattage output on 144/440 bands..... if it had 50 watts out on just those 2 bands, I would consider a purchase with much more veracity.

    • @stargazer7644
      @stargazer7644 Před 2 lety

      @@zackwidup3701 Well sure, you can put any antenna on it you like, but those antennas are mostly home brew. They're not going to sell a radio to appliance operators and tell them they have to build an antenna out of a surplus DSS dish and plumbing parts to get it to work. I expect Icom will have something for it to work with out of the box (or at least available as an extra cost option).

    I can imagine having a new digital mode where you try and transfer big amounts of data at long range in SHF. So the bigger the packets and the further the contact the higher you rank in a competition which would mean you gave to go tropo or moon bounce. The comp could start on Jan 1 and end in December giving everyone the chance to use good tropo patterns.
    Thanks.
