    I only swear by S.Guillem and for the first time I see a talent, a dancer, who reminds me of the kind of dancers I use to know as a kid, like Noella Pontois or Makarova, Pavlova, Kirkland, Farrell... Who disappeared after Sylvie's reign to bring dancers who were trying to copy her style often for the worst outcome. At last, this young jewel appears.

    Wow. This is a real Odile. A lot of famous ballerinas don't actually inhabit the role like she does here.
    I prefer the traditional Odile variation music; this is the original variation from the premiere.

    I have to add this for the haters out there in LaLa Land: If you're going to say you dislike something by all means say WHY!!! You become nothing more than a troll when all you provide is distaste for something without details. If your going to criticize then add what exactly it was that you didn't like! If you can't quite put it to words then compare her with someone whom you do like then break it down with your expertise. But until then the people who see greatness within her have been running the heart and soul of ballet since the 1740's and I would put my money with them over the opinions of once upon a time dancers or dancers whom have gotten noticed by anyone more than the florist who provides the core roses to wave around up stage while Olga is dancing. Harsh maybe but no worse than some of the garage comments that do nothing more than make the one posting it feel a little better about themselves.
    Much love and admiration from Phoenix Az. USA.

      Firstly, her technique is wonderful. That's the thing with Russian dancers, their technique is fabulous. It's always the interpretation, the feeling, the character, the imagination of the role that is lacking. I have the same complaint for almost all dancers coming from the Bolshoi and Mariinsky. I don't greatly dislike Smirnova, I just feel like she commits the same "mistake" that other dancers commit when doing Swan Lake. Their evil, cunning Black Swan is always a template, it is robotic and only complemented by a manic grin here and there (if you're lucky). That's it. The grin is all the "character" I see. Smirnova simply does the steps, puts on a fake, unchanging expression and does more aggressive arm movements. Same goes for Zakharova. Are they bad dancers? No. But their interpretations and their acting are completely lost, if non-existent to begin with. As per your suggestion, I will include a dancer that I find wonderful in this role: Gillian Murphy. You can debate whether she has the same technique, etc., but I love Gillian's interpretation because I see Odile, *not* the ballerina performing Odile.

    Although I still think that Olga Smirnova is a little young to have a full grasp of Odile's character, and she will probably always be a better Odette, I adored the fouettes. She looked like she enjoyed every moment of doing them, which is so rare. I've seen so many dancers with fixed smiles or even just a look of deep concentration, during the fouettes, but I thought she looked like she was loving it, and if she can keep that in the future, I think she will be a very wonderful Odette/Odile.

  • @islandhorsetaker
    @islandhorsetaker Před 9 lety +18

    This was two years after her graduation. While I usually like Olga's dancing, I feel like maybe it was too soon to do Odette/Odile. When you think about it, most people she graduated with are still in the corps de ballet of a company and she's a leading soloist with the Bolshoi. She wouldn't be where she is if she lacked what it takes. Surely she has a great deal of potential and talent but this role requires maturity too. I believe she'll get there, give her some time.

    • @beignet2012
      @beignet2012 Před 5 lety +3

      What did you find was missing from her performance? (There is way no perfect any role but to just tackle it). Whats parts were lacking maturity?

  • @patsylune7243
    @patsylune7243 Před 10 lety +10

    Smirnova was absolutely beautiful, so much character and charm it really emanated from her. Everyone that has their bias about some other dancers interpretation shouldn't watch. To suggest she is robotic but not like her interpretation because it is different to someone else's you like ie Zakharova well it just defeats the purpose! You undermine your own point - if they all had the same interpretation it would be robotic across the board...
    Smirnova has a clear connection to the music - a real understanding and musicality about her dancing.

    • @popolon1919
      @popolon1919 Před 9 lety +1

      I don't think so! There is a serious problem in her basic technique. She is still 24, but looks over 40 years old ballerina!!!

    • @adg8023
      @adg8023 Před 8 lety +3

      +Kohzo Yoshioka Basic placement/ turnout and feet problematic. Her arms are worse now than at Vaganova, and the mannerisms have deepened not for the better. As a result sometimes her dancing can look like caricature or cartoonish.

    Chudin was great in this pas. I personally am not a fan of his placement and alignment of his arms and neck but he flaunts his flexibility. That was probably the best split in a menage I have ever seen. And with such speed! Besides all that, he is a good partner and his feet are to die for!!

    Chudin is great! i love him, not only his lines, he is so mature. i do not like to talk bad of a performer, but she al the coda was weak and insecure, maybe a bad night, all we have bad moments, the part i really dislike is the end, the grand porte final, she just remain and Simion has to leave her up from zero... she does not help, thats not correct, if you are tired so sorry i must help your partenaire. just my opinion. Thanks for share

    So ridiculous... She is not perfect but so close to it. She is one of the worlds best dancers.
    In 2011 she graduated from the vaganova school in st. petersburg and joined the bolshoi theater. She has danced title roles already...

    • @gretacampbell74
      @gretacampbell74 Před 10 lety +2

      this might be just me, but i enjoyed her interpretation and not everyone has to have the same taste. Also she is still growing as an artist. And Odile is trying to lure the prince in so although he doesn't see it she IS a cold and detached character, but you know everyone has their own opinions on characters

    • @egomi24
      @egomi24 Před 9 lety

      Actually no, Chudin is just a bad partner. You can see him make the same mistakes with other Bolshoi women.

    • @jackir2713
      @jackir2713 Před 8 lety

      I've never seen Chudin before, but I found him to be expressionless and therefore a very difficult partner to connect to. There is no sense of his being thoroughly enamored of her. He is mostly stone-faced. Re Smirnova, I believe that she was dancing with an injury. She was out of dance for a long, long time afterwards.

    причём здесь вариация из па де де Чайковского Баланчина которую танцевал Чудин ? Смирнова плохо подготовила Одиллию, надо каждую позу вынашивать часами закрывшись в зале и несколько лет протанцевать в кор де балете. Это не уровень звёзд русского балета...
