    Two other okay live performances of Ktulu (albeit somewhat less clear than Lyceum '84) are Palo Alto and Cleveland from 1983. It was still called "When Hell Freezes Over" then.
    Alto features the leads better, while Cleveland features a loud wah scream throughout the song.
    Also, check out Four Horsemen at the Hollywood Palladium in '85 for a good live rendition of Cliffs "mini-solo", and Bell Tolls at Kabuki Theater in '85 to hear Cliffs live bass fills rather clearly.

    For the record, they are not symphonic metal, but cello metal. Which has been a thing since… apocalyptica plays Metallica vol.1.

      @AndriyVasylenko Are you in possession of the booklet from the MOP deluxe box set? I'm not, but I saw a reply to a comment on an Orion - bass only video which was talking about how "Cliff made his bass sound like a church organ".
      The reply said something like 'distorted bass underneath a Hammond b3 organ, you can see it on the session tracking sheets in the MOP deluxe box set book."
      After digging through a couple unboxing videos of the box set myself, I was able to pause at just the right moment to read the session track sheet for Orion. Underneath the 'bass' section there is something that clearly looks like 'leslie' written under it. I'm sure it said "hammond" somewhere next to it as well, with numbers and letters which I don't really understand as I'm not really sure how you're normally supposed to read these tracking sheets.
      But, we may finally have our answer, that is was recorded on BOTH bass with a leslie and a Hammond B3, though we still don't really know for certain what notes were played.

    Not suprising that it is hard to pull the bass out with cello all around it, though good to hear more of the actual bass from the song. Personally not really sold on the spoken word stuff on One feels almost out of time with the music like that. Hell of a clip they put out with it. Stay safe.

    I'm pretty sure there was this guy named Adam :) has a video of the entirety of RTL but bass only. I'm not sure if Escape is a mix of AI stems and a cover (since the guy did that on the MOP and Justice songs without any GH or RB stems) but Ktulu sounds like it's Cliff Burton since to my ears those Ktulu screams he plays and the bass tone sound the exact same as on the record and the isolation the guy did is actually pretty fucking great (video link if you're interested: czcams.com/video/SG8IePCzXRM/video.html )
    EDIT: on second thought, it might be unfortunately mixed with Jason's track from the S&M concert

      @@ULYSSES-31 There's no reason to believe they didn't have (especially when they themselves said they got the right to use the original track). If you listen to the entire album, you'll notice how much the arrangements and song structures differ from the original versions. This is consistent with the rest of the album - they didn't play note for note covers of any of the songs.
      I mean, since they used like 90% of the original track, it would be weird that they wouldn't have been allowed to use the entire track. They even got James to read lyrics and Rob to play bass on the album. I just see no reason why Metallica would try to "protect" the track. (As said, the rest of the bass tracks are only available because they were featured in the Guitar Hero and Rock Band games. Metallica wouldn't have released those tracks either.)
      It was simply their own artistic decision to change the structure a bit, just like they did in all of the other songs. It's their own version, not a note for note cover of the song.

    • @ULYSSES-31
      @ULYSSES-31 Před měsícem +2

      @@MaggaraMarine It's a completely different context to the games as the games were the original songs unaltered.

    I wonder how Cliff's skills would be regarded if he was still alive? I have never thought that his playing lived up to the mythical level that it is hyped to be. Although, he is mixed so low on the albums, that no one can really hear him. But now that we have isolated tracks, we can kind of figure out why he was mixed so low. They sound absoultely awful. Noisey, ratty and out of time. Sorry, Cliff fans. But his isolated tracks are absolutely awful.

      I have to agree. I've been a huge fan of Metallica since the mid-1980s but I think Cliff is one of the most overrated bassists of all time. I honestly don't blame Lars (or whoever else was involved in the decision) for burying his bass in the mix because it sounds awful when you can actually hear it.
