    One thing you didn't mention is the educational aspect. As someone who has a drum kit and can play it at a very basic level, but has never experimented with any other drums, the ability to play with the model in MODO Drum and very quickly get some idea of how different aspects of the hardware and playing style affect the drum sound is gratifyingly eye-opening. I suspect it will help focus what I look for and how I look for it, if and when it comes time for me to upgrade my kit.

    Cool interface. Funny that every demo I have seen of this plugin starts with drums in a cave presets. No cut on any reviewer... I would love to hear presets sound more natural in a nice studio. The super-reverb can always be added later. It just makes them sound fake right away.

    I have a bunch of ik stuff, and was intrigued by modo drum as an upgraded sound source for my electronic kit, however their demo videos don't really give you a sense of the actual sound of the drums.
    Now I'm sold!
    I absolutely love physical modeling, and this is a great use of it. I've got a Wavedrum, a Yamaha wx5/vl70m, and the Zildjian gen16 physical modeling cymbals. The flexibility of these instruments is great, because they respond like real instruments.
    My only wish was to understand how modo drums play from a physical electronic drum kit. E.g., can it handle dual trigger pads by simulating where on the head the drum is struck, so you get the proper variation in tone.

    Great sounding kits! One of them you can now get for free (the studio kit). BTW: I discovered a neat little trick that should not work but nevertheless does in GarageBand (maybe in Logic Pro too, I don't know). When you add an accompanying drummer track to a GB project you'll normally get some sounds and presets from the GB library which sound mediocre at best. In the track it always appears like an audio file, not a midi drum track.
    But when you replace the company drum plugin of that track (1st plugin in the smart controls) with the MODO drum plugin you still get the same beats - but played by the MODO sounds! You can alter anything you want in the MODO plugin menus and - what's best: You can also create different regions in the drum track which you can individually modify (by double clicking the region) with different beat presets, rhythm patterns, complexity, volume, fills and swing rates - just like if you'd use the factory GB drummer. But it will still use the better MODO sounds.

      @johnhill762 Před 3 lety +7

      The kits are very clean.

    • @Mickimmusic
      @Mickimmusic Před 3 lety +11

      It looks nice and sounds good. But a bit 'too' good in my opinion, making it less realistic sounding than Superior Drummer 3. The weak spot for me is the cymbals. There're 3 sets of those, and these are sample based. I was looking at this for cymbal swells, as these are hard to do well. But MODO DRUM has the same limitations here as sample based solutions, with way less options. I don't like the hats. On the snare, I miss some real 'smack'. On the other hand, it's quite easy to get a good kick sound from it.
      When mixed with a little bit of saturation and parallel compression, it sounds great and it's very tweakableHuge
      Superior Drummer does sound better to me though, but that comes at a cost. I don't like the default samples, but the new expansion kits sound amazing. They are about 60Gb per expansion though, and costly. Both in price as disk space. SSD3 takes about 500Gb of SSD space on my system. A plus on Superior is that it also has drum machine sounds, percussion and a huge selection of cymbals and hats. It also has a vastly bigger groove library with a nice power hand tweaking algorithm. And it can do drum detection to MIDI for drum replacement.
      The two are not really comparable and might even complement each other.

    • @beatboxbill
      @beatboxbill Před 2 lety +1

      @@Mickimmusic I agree. Although I haven't used MODO Drum for myself. I'm still using SD2, and I think it sounds a little more realistic than this. Probably because this is too clean lol. But MODO Drum might be ideal for layering live drums.

      Not even CLOSE to EZ Drummer, let alone SD3. It’s not even in a nearby league…don’t get me wrong, it’s ok. Just not a comparison. Hi hats are very basic. Presets are not incredibly usable or creatively inspiring. SD3 was miked and recorded by George Massenburg in FAR more depth. They use the actual *brand* kits so you know exactly what you’re getting, and some of the other producer packages they make are incredible. Also, SD3 just sounds a thousand times more “human“. I hope MODO gets better over time. I just don’t think this is as unique as this video is expressing.

  • @jesussaddle
    @jesussaddle Před 2 lety +1

    The online demos of this don't always do this plugin justice. Yours is the best. Also let me say that although the CPU usage of this plugin is rather high, the kit piece customization capabilities lend themselves to routing to external fx (the dry sound of these drum pieces can have a bright high end that can accept the external processing in a more versatile way than less bright samples of the rompler-based plugins. )

    A few things:
    - The cymbals being sampled is most likely the reason why it is 7 GB in size, instead of MODO Bass' 192 MB.
    - The fast loading has nothing to do with how the plugin works, but with it taking advantage of AVX CPU instructions. If your CPU doesn't have them, the plugin will refuse to install.

By the time you switch out one head (or set of snares, etc etc) for another you've forgotten what the first one sounded like--to say nothing of the expense of buying heads etc you don't want to use because they don't sound like you want.

    Mike: have you used MODO within studio one? I am having a few deal-breaker problems. Please advise if you can get it to work as a multi instrument to DAW outputs in Studio One. The lack of Room output seems to be a known problem, but the audio misrouting problem that I see may be unique to me.

    • @arthurzatarain8062
      @arthurzatarain8062 Před 3 lety +3

      Update May 15 2021: I am giving up on MoDO Drums and reverting back to Steven Slate 5.5. I wanted Modo Drums to work but there were too many problems in my Studio One setup. I reported several issues to IK Multi and at least one was officially recognized as a flaw that needed fixing. This issue was that some note velocities wouldn’t sound , requiring me to manually adjust them slightly. I record with e-drums so the velocities vary. Listening note-by-note to find and edit flubs is very tedious. The other problems I had were intermittent and hard to reproduce, but they were real problems that became deal killers for me.
      But even without the bugs I found the cymbals to be poor quality, too limited, and too quiet. I had to use plugins within Modo to raise the level, but one of my intermittent problems was that that the Modo plugins would stop working. I had to remove and reinsert them to restore function. And slight changes in velocity would produce very drastic changes in tone on all the instruments. I also had problems with multi outputs to Studio One, where in some circumstances some outputs wouldn’t play unless I inserted dummy (unused) outputs in the setup.
      I liked MODO’s ease of crafting a drum sound that I wanted (as compared to SSD’s bizarre library system), but the bugs and meager cymbals caused me to give up on Modo Drums for now. I switched back to Slate and the results were (to my ear) far superior to Modo Drums.
      The IK Multi customer support takes weeks to respond, and I sense that there is minimal product development. I think there has been only one update since a Modo Drums was introduced a long time ago. I would expect a new program like this to have updates every month or so. I am sure I am not the only user submitting bug reports, but I don’t see any update coming soon (or ever).
      Your experience may be better than mine, but for now I have to put MODO drums on the back burner (or maybe even in the freezer). I wanted to like it but for me the cons outweighed the pros.

      Hello! I came across your very detailed comment and gave this a try. I'm by no means well versed with Studio One but assigning separate outputs for Modo Drum (15 besides the "Master") worked like a breeze. It's done similar in Cakewalk, just opening the Mixer inside Modo Drum and set each instrument to DAW-->Output Chan.
      This was tested just now (18Jul21) with Modo Drum 1.1.3 (there was an update in their "Product Manager"). Release notes state "Changes from version 1.1.2:
      Fixed an issue with the level scaling of the velocity."

    Is it possible to adjust ADSR for each drum?

  • @Eric-dd8bk

    I don't want to add more tracks and add more third party fx plugins to mix the drum since the Modo Drum alone uses alot of CPU power.
    I want to mix the drums inside the modo drum as much as I can to save CPU load but can't seem to figure out how to add more buses or make the internal 8 buses to show up.
    Can someone help me with this?
    Thank you in advance.

    it's really funny. I've been using ezdrummer for years, and the thing is, it sounds like midi drums unless i play with an electronic drum kit. ezdrummer relies on velocity for variation. even if you have it set to the high sample setting, it still sounds like machine guns of the velocity is the same. i pulled up modo drum, plugged in a snare toll, same velocity, there's obvious variation, and it sounds way more realistic. 🤦🏻‍♂️ it's pretty insane how good it sounds

    Can somebody help me? I bought this product and I love it madly. The only problem I have is I can't change the pan of the hi-hats and other cymbals. I want them a little closer to the center but the pan controls in the mixer panel are not functioning. The sounds always stay the same.

    • @eggsmungling7960
      @eggsmungling7960 Před 11 měsíci

      That will be down to the overhead mics. Either turn down the hat and cymbal sends to the overheads for individual control or turn down the overheads completely for global control.

    In the system requirements, it says 16 GB RAM recommended, and 20 GB hard drive space. I only have about 6 GB available right now. It's too bad, because I wanted to use this one instead of my "perfect drums." I think this one sounds better. I'd free up space if I uninstalled Perfect Drums, but probably still not enough.

    • @somewhatoddmusic
      @somewhatoddmusic Před 3 lety

      You can record sustain using the computer keyboard "TAB" key (named Hold) or the virtual onscreen keyboard using a mouse. Just activate it under "Views -- Virtual Controllers" and make sure Virtual Controller is an input on the track you want to add sustain onto and record. One click is pedal down and then you have to press it again for pedal up.
      You can also add them manually if you wish (CC64) but it can take a long time to put them in exactly the right place unless it's a very short piece of music. www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=Cakewalk&language=3&help=EditingMIDI.22.html
      And yes you can export MIDI and audio from Cakewalk. Both options are available under "File -- Export".

  • @PANTECHNICONRecordings

    Your calculation of how many samples a conventional drum plug-in would require are way off - there’s no way any of them are using 128 discrete velocity layers (AD2 sounds like three or four to me, for example). However, the conceptual distinction between sample-based and modelled is valid.

    When this came out I really wanted to like it, as I like most of what IKM do, but no, there's something about it that sounds plasticky and unrealistic. I guess it's interesting as a sound design tool, but for me it can't justify the price as it is now. I own Superior Drummer which covers all my drum needs, sounds absolutely amazing and has a great user interface.
