You walk the talk. You are truly a rare kind in the fashion social media world. â€
This is so kind, thank you. I really appreciate it
So true!
One thing I definitely learned the hard way it's not to buy the thing that's almost what you want.
I thrift everything right? Finding that almost army jacket , or those almost perfect jeans ---whatever it may be, will never satisfy you, and you will not reach for it, so leave it at the store.
You are so right! Even if it is thrifted, it still costs way too much if we don't ever wear it at all. Good call! :)
Style is priceless. No amount of luxury products can buy that
Such great advice! When I was first getting into minimalism I loved the idea of buying intentionally and curating a small wardrobe where everything fits together seamlessly but everyone always suggested buying "classic, timeless" pieces such as a white t-shirt, white shirt, a blue denim jacket, loafers, a designer bag EVERYONE has etc. which i never wear and i always found the wardrobes people often suggested so uninspiring and soulless. I like soft colours rather than neutrals in my wardrobe and I like feminine styles rather than more androgynous silhouettes, so nothing about the "classic minimalist wardrobe" would have worked for me. You're so spot on that an intentional wardrobe needs to be curated with the wearer in mind first rather than what other people consider "classics" that are never going to go out of style! It's always much better to buy pieces that fit your style and your personality first and foremost and genuinely bring you joy and make you feel confident when you wear them. And I love that you mentioned waiting to find the perfect piece for you rather than just buying into a trend without considering how to best adapt that trend to what you like and are going to keep wearing long after the trend is over.
The leather jacket choice I totally agree with. I had the same issue with the biker jacket style. I found a vintage 80s look jacket with small gold studs and rounded shoulders - adore it.
The poplin top one is SO REAL. I almost thought something was wrong with me for not gravitating towards it
But I have a cotton white ruffle top from SĂ©zane that I always wear. So thatâs my personal âwhite shirtâ staple. Thank you for your perspective and making me feel seen!
Instead of plain tank tops, I love vintage-patterned fabric in flowy fabric. Worn with solid structured shorts/trousers.
Late to the party, but I got recommended ballerina flats so often that I had to try them on. Turns out, yes they look great and are comfortable but they really don't suit me at all. I got some simple slip on loafers instead. Also I don't wear white at all, because it simply isn't my colour. But if I ever find a nice blouse or shirt in creme, I will get it. But no luck so far. Same with a decent blazer. I didn't find one that truly fit me or I could at least alter in a way that it would fit me perfectly.
Such great advice to wait to find the right piece. I love v-neck necklines but theyâre not âinâ every year so waiting for the right piece to come out instead of settling for a different neckline makes a huge difference to how good I feel about my wardrobe.
Absolutely love this video!!!†Thank you for the inspiration!
Great video Helen!!! I really like the concept
I really enjoyed your video. I've learned how to shop more thoughtfully because of your videos.
I like your intentional approach to style â€
I'm with you on 'classic jewellery' and 'chunky loafers' - the classic jewellery has become so common (sorry!) that you can see it all the time on other people. The chunky loafers just wouldn't work for my frame either! Looking back it's good that I held my urge and didn't get them in the end :P
Thank you for reminding us to think outside the box, Helen! Like you, I have always searched for a version thatâs much more âmeâ, and those are the pieces that I keep forever! I love the jewelry; I wasnât a big Monica Vinader fan, but these pieces have convinced me to take another look. Beautiful on you! I also love the top youâre wearing đ€©
That was a superinteresting video. đ I always appreciate it when individual style is being encouraged.
Such great points, to remember when choosing pieces to invest in. The denim skirt has almost got me, but it's too hot in az. I prefer a light silk, linen or gauze skirt
I really enjoyed this! I love your thoughtful and considered approach to style and how you've honed in on what you love to wear đ
This is exactly how classics are supposed to work for the ones that you do choose to wear !
Love this video. Wear what makes you feel great. I love color and it can be really hard to find items that are not neutrals.
Great advice... true personal style!
Fabulous video and exactly what i needed to hear to avoid being tempted to buy certain things in the name of "classic."
I'm currently looking for a trench coat that checks all my boxes. Still searching!
Great recommendations Helen! I always look forward to your videos.
Thank you
Love what you purchased instead and love the Levi ribcage jeans :)
Very good advice that I have always applied. You have to define whatâs classic for yourself, what suits your individual style that you will go back to time and time again. Not necessarily what is classed as universal classics that may not suit your particular style or lifestyle
Hii Iâve recently become addicted to your videos because of the great values are with purchasing clothes! I feel like Iâve been crazy, but I really align with what you say even though we have completely different styles haha. Your last example with the denim skirt helped so much because Iâve been looking for a pair of gray baggy jeans and itâs been 2 years and I still donât have a pair!! I feel u on needing it to be perfect because then it would be a waste!
Great video
You made it okay to not follow the trend and to show the way to make it your own.
I love how practical and stylish you are. I can relate to everything you didnât buy (except for the white button haha I love a classic button down). As far as the denim skirt goes (advice from someone who has been wearing them for many years now) I find mid rises most comfortable when sitting. Anything too high rise can feel uncomfortable sitting down. J.Crew just came out with a denim midi that is so comfortable if that is your style. I also have a great skirt from Rails that is super comfortable (comes in blue denim and ecru) and a just below the knee skirt with a raw hem from Reformation that is extremely comfortable. I know itâs all personal preference since our body shapes are all different so I hope you find exactly what you are looking for. Have a nice day!
Honestly I purchased a green onyx pendant and earrings in January on holiday in India!! Love your onyx ring đ
Because I wear quite plain clothes, l like to go all out on accessories like jewellery and scarves. I really appreciate your very sensible reasoning. I totally agree. No leather jacket they just look weird on me. No super chunky shoes for the same reason. I just wear things that will last and I feel like myself in. Like you do đâ€ïž
Although I have a few classic white shirts in both linen and cotton, I find I rarely wear them, opting instead for my Liberty Lawn shirts in ditzy patterns paired with classic wide leg denim pants. I'll throw on a blazer i this cooler weather and I'm good to go.
you are the best fashion blogger
In the example of the loafers you went for a much "classic" style, I can tell. But I truly understand what you are trying to convey: to take time to really understant what you truly like and feel comfortable in and yourself
I do feel the same about white shirts. I never wear my classic one.
Your leather jacket is a classic motocross style. Slightly oversized but def a classic! It looks amazing on you!
Thank you so much :)
Good advice. I bought a beautiful classic leather moto jacket in a sale but hardly wear it because it is not really my style.
Love your videos and your thought process behind fashion. We have different styles but this video is like exactly the way I think it's amazing lol.
I've been looking for the perfect leather jacket for 10+ years, recently the classic one has visually saturated my eyes, to be on the search for 10 years and have this style of jacket no longer seemed like a thrilling end to the search? So I started asking why I wanted the jacket ... It seemed like a ghost of a goal And I wasn't sure why anymore, but it definitely began with the wardrobe staples videos, I've seen slight different variations and I thought the ladies were all stylish but I didn't want it, and I've been looking for something like my denim jackets that have touches of what I like (I was even looking at leather trucker stylesđ). I'd actually like yours because the collar type (band) and fit (oversized) is what i like in my wardrobe, but I like silver hardware.
This video is like wonderful encouragement to let go of having exact classics or classics with only slight variations. I end up doing that anyway in real life, but my pinterest wishlist are full of products with classics with slight variations.
Wonderful advice! For me, black pencil midi skirts never work đ€·ââïž I think a dark midi satin a-line skirt is more versatile and creates a visual interest.
That leather jacket suits you so well!!
Same for loafers. I got low heels doc martins
I started tailoring my wardrobe to suite my kibbe body type instead. I buy the same classics, just in silhouettes and lines that would drape on me better.
I bought two pairs of barrel jeans because of you. They are more comfortable and interesting than straight leg jeans. Tucking the top in these jeans makes my body longer (we are the same height).
I agree with ALL your points. It is all about what suits me, not about marketing or trend. Btw, a slightly cropped relaxed motorcycle leather jacket would pair really well with your Leviâs rib cage jeans and tee.
Oh yes barrel jeans! I still love the shape and think they're so flattering. Glad you love them too :)
I'd add the dreaded trench coat to that list but I have to say I love denim skirts (midi not maxi).
Thank you for this great video ! Can we have the name of the white sweater you are wearing during the video ? Itâs beautiful and I couldnât find it on your channel â€
What lipstick are you wearing? love it so much!
Thank you for making this video! Itâs weird that our styles are very different but your videos helped me define the style that works for me đ€
Do you have any advice on how to choose words to describe personal style? Or maybe more examples.
Please advise on the sizing, fit for Todâs loafers. Thanks.
very nice
Hi! Can you please link the page of the leather jacket again..the page isn't opening... Thank you! a must-have for me... lovely!
Please link the white shoulder bag you paired with leather jacketâ€
Thank you. Now I know why classic tailored shirts don't excite me.
Helen I truly truly love your style of your videos so so so much and can you tell me which mic do you use you are my inspiration and I wish you have a amazing weekendđđđ«
I use the rode wireless mic :) thank you so much xx
Where is the off white shoulders bag from shown with the dress?
Wonderful information, thank you. I canât wear a white button up shirt.
Thank YOU! :) Looks like we share that as I find them a little hard to style as well.
Very Smart: not drinking the CZcams or Insta Influencer kool-aid.
I donât own a black coat or black blazer đ
Where do I place her accent?
Iâve never liked beige trenchcoats. For one thing, a raincoat without a hood seems impractical to me. Also, when I was growing up, women over seventy always had their hair in a tight grey perm and wore beige trenchcoats. And Iâm plus size - in a trench, I look like a sack of potatoes. So instead I have a cheerful blue Harrington jacket with a hood. As blue is my favourite colour, the jacket goes with everything. Itâs a good choice for me.
ur so unique and not like other girls xx
uncalled for negativity đ this video is so harmless
I find it amusing that this comment seems sincere, but "not like other girls" has been turned into an insult to mock so we won't really know
