- In this video I respond to a no cooling call where I ended up quoting a replacement. In it I use the Stratus leak detector, and compare it to the DR58.

What an honor to be able to service Boomhauer's Rheem!
Having spares is always a good idea. Especially with the known differences between the two
I have seen h10 pro did a great job on getting leaks it's expensive gets the job done
That Stratus can be used as a CO2 and Combustible gas detector with replaceable sensors, and is one of the best infrared detectors on the market. It may have been expensive, but it is money well spent.
I'm new to your channel I couldn't find the right video on my phone but I'm watching it on my TV right now where a month ago these two puppies were very poor condition God bless you sir it made me sick to see them and you gave me heart God bless you!!
Good job Curtis, I don't think any warranty is left on that one.
Big difference!!!
Nice work
I think you found the right one.
You ever try a ultrasonic leak detector? That's what I use to find leaks. Works pretty good.
Curtis please keep us updated on those two leak detectors in how there performance thanks
@hvac guy hey man. First of all, thank you for what you do and taking the time to share. I binge watch these all the time. Listen in between calls myself as I'm an HVAC tech here in AZ. Have you ever used/ heard of the Jbi prowler 5000 leak detector?
Its amazing, he understands gulluh
“That’s why they call it a heat pump, it heats from the pump.” I have such a hard time explaining heat pumps to people sometimes especially when they think they understand how air conditioners work already.
I think the inficon is more sensitive because of infrared.
I’m planning on getting the DR 82. That one is infrared as well
I have the DR82, it's nice but I realized it's better at pin pointing the leak than the inficon, the inficon does pick up small leaks better, but that's cause it's reading the concentration in the air, I know all leak detectors do this, but I had better luck pin pointing the leak with the DR82 while my inficon will go crazy in spaces that have a small concentration of refrigerant in the air.
If that makes sense
I love my DR 58 what a incredible instrument
Yep, time to start watching the trash for gems.
Before you totally give up on the fieldpiece, try it in manual zero mode. If you hold the zero button for more than 2 seconds, it will quite doing that auto zero crap all the time. You will have to zero it manually though, but it seems to work better for me like that. I have a d tek also and it's a good detector too. Anyway, I think you'll like the fieldpiece in manual mode better.
Well I have watched a few videos now using the Stratus and DR58 & 82. The Stratus always seems to perform better but everyone has the auto zero enabled on the DR’s which I think would make it more difficult to find a leak. I would like to see a comparison with that feature off.
This guy is a workaholic. Gets home from work and edits videos about himself working.
Then dreams of work when sleeping. 😴 💤
HVAC isn't a job, it's a lifestyle my friend.
,,,and guess who watches the videos 😁
I love it!! Def my favorite CZcamsr!
He probably hired an editor to run his channel
Had it lost pressure though to affect the second leak detector, or was it side by side back and forth..?
Did the DR 58 get wet at the tip before? I heard people replacing the tip quite often due to moisture damaging the tip. Doesn't sound too robust.
H10 Bacharach
"Too heavy"
So I hear.
Hey boss. What's your favorite leak detector for 410? Don't consider price
What kind of results would it be to use a dye type leak detection, especially on older leaky systems like that, would it be too expensive? I have wondered about that as far as repairing a leak...
Great video 🇺🇸👍
I try not to use it. Never had a bad experience with it, but don’t like the idea of injecting something into a system. But, this one was unable to run, and you need it to run a good while to get good results
👍
I think the best leak detector you own will vary by refrigerant type. The Fieldpiece might be better on 410a than the stratus. I know the old Fieldpiece leak detector SRL8 is very sensitive compared to the H10 on 410a and vice versa on other refrigerant types.
I was testing with 410
Angry Beaver good to know. I don’t own the stratus, just the H10 and SRL8
HVAC GUY ok thanks. You probably said it in the video, I just skipped straight to the comparison part and assumed it was R22
Angry Beaver I agree
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
It’s a crusty one mr. Grinch
Lol, and that DEFINITELY wasn’t the Taj Mahal!
Not sure how much you have used the dr58, the heated diode looses it's effectiveness pretty quick I found. I used mine for about 3 months and had to get a new one because I noticed it wasn't working as good. Once I replaced the diode it was back. Replacing the tips often helps as well.
3 months? They claim 300 hours of use. I’m only on 11
I will say this I haven't had to recharge the battery in it yet and have already had to replace the diode. So there's no way it lasts 300 hours.
I gather you can adjust the heat? Running it hotter on a new tip will reduce the life of the tip. Make sure to turn it down with new tips, up as they lose sensitivity.
Damnit!!! I just bought the dr58🤬
It’s not a bad leak detector. You just might want to keep your ultrasonic with you.
@@HVACGUY yeah I take it everywhere I go. I would love for you to get the ultrasonic one day and do a review on it
Looking at the house and interior, how do you ensure you get paid? That unit definitely showed it's age and needed replacement. My old system lasted 31 years. Wasn't happy about paying 10k for the new one, but it's been great and saves me money every month.
Sometimes its about safety for the family. Safety before money
@@bevshelden6536 i'm 70 and grew up in houses without AC. Too expensive. I don't know what systems cost down where he is, but 7-10k is normal for a house in Minnesota to replace the furnace and AC. That's a lot of money for some people.
You saved nothing you paid 10k..silly..
@@petero2693 Depends how you look at it. Paid 10k up front and saving 40% monthly on NG and Electricity over my old system, plus no more service calls and hassle.
The tech/commissioned salesman that quoted me $16,000 said the new system would save me in energy cost. I asked how much less than my old R22 system. He said about $30 a month less to cool the house. I only run the air conditioning July through September. So I should pay $16,000 to "save" $90 a year. On top of that I asked how long the new system would last. He said at least 10 years. What a joke. The old system in this house is 40 years old and other than a minor leak all the salesman, sorry, I mean techs, refuse to fix, it hasn't needed any other repairs ever. Everyone is under pressure from the business owners to sell their made in China/Mexico junk instead of doing honest repairs.
Alright now the real question is , would be better to buy , inficon stratus, or accutrack ultrasonic
I have the accutrak ultrasonic. Works great. I have found leaks that wouldn't drop pressure while pressure testing at 470 psi
Definitely not a hater. Have watched lots of your videos and know you do good work. Just curious why you put 410 in an R22 unit.
he used it as a trace gas for the nitrogen pressure test
Thanks for your answer @@allanbrito13
I think Rheem/ Rudd. Installed a little bigger compressor in-unit I would go with a 2 ton
Surprised there is not a sign of oil on that evaporator coil.
I understand this is a comparison but it’s not really a fair comparison. The stratus is infra red and a thousand dollars the dr58 is heated diode and less than half the money
What app did you use to take a picture and it looks up the info? Bluon?
I was trying to punch it in on the Copeland app
Are people ever embarrassed to have you come to their house? Meaning like they clearly live in an old rundown trailer that is falling apart which is sad but so many people live this way. I know I've lived in a trailer like this and I was so embarrassed to have anybody come over when something needed fixing and most of the time I just lived without what I needed or tried to fix it myself.
Yes. When they apologize I tell them, “you haven’t seen my house. Don’t worry about it.”
I live in a nice neighborhood, expensive homes, but, I had to go on disability..I let stuff pile up all around me cause I was so depressed, I vowed no one would ever see the inside. Well..attic fire happened, they packed up all my crap, now it’s a fresh start..I was more embarrassed by all my clutter than worried about the fire..
Walk into kitchen should tell you that they don't have two nickels to rub together
Soapy water works everytime..at least for air leaks on plumbing system...try that?
Big blue.
Dude 410a? Put some r22 first then pressurize it.
As a oneman HVAC company. Were should I investment be made in the fieldpiece or the other leak detector thank you in advance.
It don’t have to be as expensive as the Stratus. I used the Prowler 5000 by JB for a very long time with much success.
In your state, do you not have help for low income people for furnace/ air conditioner because of safety for the home owner. Colorado does
None that is state sponsored, not in GA. Sometimes there’s a minuscule rebate by the power company.
LIHEAP is in Georiga....(Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program pays up to $20.000 Depends on Income/family size.
@@hughholt121 thanks. This customer could benefit from this, I’ll try to help him apply
I read an announcement from Lennox last week that said there are going to be programs for upgrading to more energy efficient systems from the federal inflation reduction act. Income based on region averages.
I like the fancy tools that take you to a leak just condemn a coil and not fix it. Tools are good. The mechanics suck.
Fieldpiece leak detectors are terrible in my opinion. I have owned 3 different ones, hoping to find a good one. I like Fieldpiece products but they dropped the ball on leak detectors.
Oh great,,, I just spent 265.00 bucks on the fluke..... But so far I am happy with it.
What do you use to find leaks?
@@allanbrito13 For 410a I use the Yellowjacket Accuprobe.
