  • I cover various forms of ornaments including cutting, patting, and rolling on traditional Irish whistle (tinwhistle, pennywhistle) including double-cut rolls.

    I can't believe you don't have more likes and views - you're an excellent teacher by showing each type of ornamentation slowly and thoroughly explaining it. Thank you so much!

      You're welcome! About having more views, my videos aren't monetized so there's no financial aspect to it. I just like to share what I've learned, and hope that I can be of help to whoever might want it.

    This is great! I keep listening to Irish music and was curious as to what this thing was that was like a trill or a turn but knew it wasn't either of them. This has answered my question! I have been listening to rolls that are made out of cuts and pats! Thanks so much! Going to try these on my penny whistle or maybe even my clarinet!

      Thanks! So often people from outside the Irish music world perceive the Irish "rolls" as being trills. It is true that especially uilleann pipers do use trills, generally done with the lower-hand index finger only, usually on F# but also on E, and usually in the 2nd octave. Listen especially to Paddy Moloney of The Chieftains who uses these 2nd-octave F# and E trills quite a bit.

    This is great! Thank you so much! I just started learning this year and I have been looking for things to practice outside of just learning songs. This is exactly the kind of thing I needed.

    Hey I love the shirt! I’m a reenactor and history buff so I’m in Gettysburg a lot.

      I love the battlefield but I also love the village itself, the Irish Brigade shop, Dirty Billy's Hats, and the Garryowen Irish Pub. I go whenever I can. I was a Civil War re-enactor in the 1970s when it was still basking in the afterglow of the Centennial. When my Grandmother was a teenager all the older men were veterans, she remembered them sitting on the stoops sharing their war stories with each other. My Grandfather's dad was a Civil War veteran, my other Grandfather's Grandfather was.

      @@RichardDCook I am a descendant of civil war vets as well! Sadly I never met them because I was born in 2001 but I would love to take a time machine back and be a fly on one of their shoulders at the time of the battle.

    Is that whistle bag specially made for whistles?

    • @RichardDCook
      @RichardDCook  Před 3 lety

      Yes it was bespoke/custom with 14 slots designed to hold my whistles in every key from Low C to High Eb. The maker is on Etsy, her shop is called cowkaren. (Her shop has sock monkeys but she's a great seamstress and can make just about anything.)

    Is that a Ojoyous whistle roll case?

    • @RichardDCook
      @RichardDCook  Před 3 lety

      That whistle roll was made for me by a woman on Etsy, her shop is called "cowkaren". She doesn't have whistle rolls listed, but if you ask she can make one for you. She can do any colour, fabric, or size you want, I specifically wanted a roll that would hold everything from a huge Low C whistle up to the tiny High F whistle. As you see the pockets are graduated in size, because I keep one whistle of each size in the roll. Thanks!

    • @RichardDCook
      @RichardDCook  Před 3 lety

      @@soslothful OK, I just checked out Ojoyous, yes they look similar but I don't see an Ojoyous one as big as my cowkaren roll, mine has 14 slots in graduated sizes plus a narrow 15th slot for holding a pencil. Another interesting thing about my roll, I had Karen put on two pairs of tie-tapes so that the open roll can be hung from a music stand. As you know at gigs floor space can be at a premium.
