Idk if you misunderstood the "react" meaning or you're just joking, but he meant that you physically can't react to defend your self from these balls.

Brings me back to the high school volleyball days where I got smacked in the face by the ball while going for a block. Half my face was just red for the rest of the day. Worst part was the ball ended up going out. :(

Hey, Erik, Today I gave the assignment to watch the best liberos in the world perform and to give me a review on their performance. This is for an 8th grade PE class in Santa Barbara, Ca. Here is what my student wrote.... I watched the Erik Shoji video which was pretty awesome, he has a lot of skill. The main thing I noticed is that Erik would always go super low for the ball so he would be more stable and have more power. Every play that he deflected was highly calculated and I could see the gears turning in his head as he tried to pass the ball. Something I can appreciate about his playstyle is that he would always go for the ball no matter what and I could see that all the skill was crafted into those fast moments. The ball would appear in front of him and he would automatically know what to do with the ball to make it stay up. Erik Shoji most definitely has power, skill, and the ability to combine the two into defensive plays that dismantle the opponent's attacks.

I'm impressed at how laid back you all are after you get hit in the face. The one time it happened to me I was up and cussing darn near immediately! I had blood shooting out of my nose and a stream of abuse pouring out of my mouth. Not a pretty sight! Yet for some reason I kept playing until I couldn't anymore.
I was training with the national team and we only train once a month so I wasn’t fully used to the servers and someone served float for some reason I thought I was in the right position then next thing I knew it was straight in my face. That’s even more embarrassing because it was a float and I had time not just a power hit 🙃

My good friend has the best sixpack i've ever witnessed. We were playing in a tournament and we ran a super deceptive 1 ball. The other team didn't see my friend come up. My friend hit the ball so hard into our opponent face (dead smack center in his face), the ball flew up 90 degrees straight up and almost hit the ceiling. The spectators all ran onto the court laughing lol.
Our the opposing player sat out the rest of the game lol.

I think a lot of those head shots happen in area 1 because outsides tend to be set more often, also middles are generally right handed which makes it easier to hit towards 1, just a guess from a volleyball nerd tho.
"what is about position 1?" ugh!! I KNOW right!!! I'm a setter so I truly experienced this ^^u after a few, you HAVE to learn to protect the face, no choice ^^u. thankfully it wasn't a this level. I can't imagine the headache

Ive been at a new school for six months and this school is big into volleyball we have 4 volleyball courts and I play while wearing glasses because I have the worst eyesight and I have Already broken 3 pairs og glasses in six months

Hey Erik, when you mentioned that you lost your match in Russia, I was wondering what it's like being a professional volleyball player in terms of living. Do you live in the U.S. and travel to Russia for a few months to practice or do you live in Russia and go to the U.S. to practice with the National Team? I've always been interested in this aspect of a professional volleyball player since I have a dream of being a pro lol
thanks for watching and for the question! so in general the summers are for the national team and 7-8 months over the winter are for playing pro. so normally our players will head overseas in August/September/October and then head back to the states for the national team in April or Mayish
Cool! Do you have a house/apartment to stay in for both countries? I think I heard you mention in another video that you are rooming with someone thats also on the U.S. team but I can't quite remember lol. Thanks for replying back it means a lot lol

passing is serve receive and defense is from a spike. there are different techniques with both!
