Based on the acclaimed, contemporary love story of the same name, The Idea of You centers on Solène (Anne Hathaway), a 40-year-old single mom who begins an unexpected romance with 24-year-old Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the lead singer of August Moon, the hottest boy band on the planet. When Solène must step in to chaperone her teenage daughter’s trip to the Coachella Music Festival after her ex bails at the last minute, she has a chance encounter with Hayes and there is an instant, undeniable spark. As they begin a whirlwind romance, it isn’t long before Hayes’ superstar status poses unavoidable challenges to their relationship, and Solène soon discovers that life in the glare of his spotlight might be more than she bargained for.

What makes this song extra special is that it's about Solène and Hayes's journey to be together. It has extra meaning and is personal to them, saying he'll hold on to the idea of her to get through the excruciatingly long wait. That's so beautiful. I wish Anne had had a chance to show off her incredible voice too but Nick Galitzine was definitely incredible. Yes, as she said in the last scene before they parted for five years, he's going to have an incredible life. Spoiler on how this song fits the ending
The song fits the ending perfectly. How he chose to wait for her for those five years to be with her when her daughter in college living her life, when he a solo singer and but older now 29. They told each other if during those five years if they had a chance to be happy without them they would take it. Neither of them decide to take it until they can be together again.

I so agree. Because the overwhelming message in this film is hope over experience, and true love is a rare and wonderful thing. I have grown to love this song. And the singing of it.

The meaning of the song is so beautifully poignant and so personal to them. The fact they actually waited 5 years...that's true love. 😭😭 I'd wait for Nick Galitzine too if I had to lmao. And you can tell a part of Solène didn't fully believe he'd wait that long and would move on, indicated by her reaction to his line on Graham Norton when he said he'd be seeing someone in LA. She was probably thinking "there's no way he's talking about me, not after all this time." And then to see her going to the front of her gallery with bated breath, hoping against all hope that it's him she'll see...so sweet. 😭
