  • On a late October day four riders set out to ride White Rim, three for the first time. What followed was a perfect day of good company, great weather, big views, and a bucket list ride completed.

    I was on the WR a few weeks later last fall. Losing 1 hour of daylight and the lower temps (high of low 40's) definitely hurt. My buddies were on FS MTB's, myself a Trek Domane Aluminum 700cx35 lol. I had read, at the time, people doing it with 32's, so I naively thought why the hell not. Most painful experience of my life. Did mile 70-100 in total darkness. Was having illumination issues once we got off Hardscrabble. Got back in to town with only a Dominoes open around midnight but boy was it glorious. Live and learn I guess. I've got a Canyon Grizl now that can take 50's, I'd do it again but not in a day. I'd only do in a day with a MTB, but like you said, to each their own. That bedrock between Shafer and basically all the way to Murphy's annihilated me where my MTB counterparts floated over it. Nice work!

      Nice work back at ya! 35 is a whole other level. That said, the first time we ever did it was on 35 Cross Bosses and we survived. We always tell unimitated people to ride a MTB, because underbiking is an acquired taste.

    I took (as a guide) a group of 13-14 year old boy scouts around the White Rim on Mountain Bikes nearly 30 years ago. To this day, those boys still talk about that 4 day ride as one of the greatest adventures they have ever been on. Would love to do it again, maybe I will now!

      We saw a group of dad-types and kids out the day that we rode this one, and we agree, that is definitely a lifetime memory in the making - for the adults and kids both!

    Just finished this in October. I took the scenic route with a three day solo bikepack. Used my Cannondale Topstone Gravel Bike riding on 45C Maxxis. Got a few raised eyebrows chatting with folks at the bike shops etc. My humble opinion is you are way overbiked with an MTB on this route and I had no issues and relatively comfortable with a loaded machine (11 litres of water onboard!)...not fast, but who cares...the scenery and camping was absolutely stunning - burned into my memory - including a massive T-storm the first night that almost ripped my tent apart!

      Bravo on doing it your way and enjoying it! Cycling is a very personal experience, and so many people are quick to prescribe their preferences to others, but in the end whatever makes you happy is the best way. Your trip sounds amazing.

    Did White Rim in one day about 2 years ago on my Cannondale Topstone Carbon with the biggest tires I could fit in it, can confirm that this ride would definitely be more comfortable with some suspension! Your arms, back and hands will hurt riding this on a gravel bike :) great film!

      Most people are going to have the most fun on a MTB, but we've gotten our drop bar setups quite dialed - minus Bryan and his fully rigid setup with the 48t. He's crazy, ha! :)

      @@rodeoadventurelabs4817 well at least he’s got a beast of a drop bar bike that can fit MTB tires! I am very disappointed in the rear tire clearance of my 2020 Cannondale Topstone frame (max is ~40mm). Looked like y’all had a great day out there, hope to make it back one day! Cheers

    What a motivational film. Makes me want to go out and ride! Ok, 8pm and rain is not the best time but tomorrow is another day. On a different point, I wrote to Gary Vaynerchuck 12 years ago he needs to hire a full time videographer/photographer. You might not be ready for full time but I feel you could create more content and get it in front of more people without the pressure of having to direct and produce it all. This is a note to the intern.

    • @rodeoadventurelabs4817
      @rodeoadventurelabs4817  Před 6 měsíci

      There was no need to filter because temps were in the 60s and we weren't drinking as much. We carried about 140oz of water / liquids each.

  • @AdamHarbottle

    Great video! I plan on riding this later this month on my Ti Flaanimal! Question: I've heard mixed info - if you leave start / finish at Mineral Bottom, then do you have to get a permit? My buddy who rode it just a few weeks says "no", but everything I read says "yes."

    • @rodeoadventurelabs4817
      @rodeoadventurelabs4817  Před měsícem

      You do need to get a permit per the rules, but it isn't expensive or hard to get. You are crossing into national park and a very remote area and they want to know who is out there and they probably want to control how much it gets used. That said, a single day permit is much easier to get than overnight permits. Have we always gotten a permit? No. We didn't know that day permits were a thing some of the times we've ridden it, and we were never stopped or asked about that, but it's worth doing it right. PS: Use the biggest tires the frame will fit! And a squishy stem and post wouldn't hurt either. Have fun!

  • @chrisc738
    @chrisc738 Před 6 měsíci +1

    So inspirational. I stood at the top of the Schafer switchbacks in late 2020 and said, “someday.” It’s not come yet but I just know it will.
    Tell me about water. Did you carry it all or find some to filter somewhere?

    • @rodeoadventurelabs4817
      @rodeoadventurelabs4817  Před 6 měsíci +1

      We're careful not to ride this when the temps are too hot. Anything much over 80f will dramatically increase water requirements. We all had about 60-70oz of bottle water and about 70oz in our packs and we all finished with water to spare, but our temps were only in the low to mid 60s. You can filter or treat the green water, and at times there is snow runoff in February or March in various arroyos.

  • @briancrosby5077
    @briancrosby5077 Před 6 měsíci +1

    What tire sizes did you guys run? I'm on the fence about taking my TD3 or FS MTB on my hopeful second run on it next year. I've been leaning towards the MTB for a bit more comfort and rideability with the larger volume tires on the sandy and rougher sections. Awesome day out by the way.

    • @rodeoadventurelabs4817
      @rodeoadventurelabs4817  Před 6 měsíci

      We all had 29x2.1 and 29x2.2, but it's actually a bit more comfortable on 650x2.4. The critical thing for dialing in the monster gravel setup is the Redshift stem and the suspension seatpost. When you've got all those bits installed it makes for a great day. A MTB will always be more comfortable, but also over biked for large parts of the route. We specifically always try to push ourselves and our equipment, so pure comfort isn't the primary concern on a single day outing such as this.

    • @briancrosby5077
      @briancrosby5077 Před 6 měsíci

      Thanks for the reply. I only have a 700c wheelset for my Donkey. I can do 47mm R and 50mm F. I do think getting over 2' is ideal. I have a Redshift stem and eesilk seatpost, which definitely helps. But will probably still roll with the MTB next go. My last trip was several years ago on a 26" FS Specialized Stumpjumper so just about anything should make for a faster outing. @@rodeoadventurelabs4817

    • @rodeoadventurelabs4817
      @rodeoadventurelabs4817  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Mountain bike will be more comfortable and for people who are in doubt that's the safe bet. But if you put big tires, a proper gearing, and perhaps Redshift bits on it, your Donkey can be quite comfortable on the route. No matter what bike you ride it will be perfect for some of the day and imperfect for others.
