This tutorial is compatible with iOS, iPadOS, Android and ChromeOS.
In this LumaFusion Tutorial I’ll share with you a tip that I have been using for a while to selectively adjust and color grade underexposed areas in a video without affecting the remaining areas.
This separation is done using Luma Key Masking.
Later in the tutorial I’ll show you how using this same method you can apply different color gradings for brighter and darker areas of a video, blending them seamlessly.
Lastly, I’ll briefly show you how to create a Text Behind Subject effect using the method explained in this video.

Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a comment!
This video made me download lumafusion
Awesome! Enjoy getting to know LumaFusion!
Great work! LF seems to have so much more scope than is immediately apparent. Many thanks for bringing your ingenious solutions to the wider community of users. Subbed.
Thank you so much for your kind comments and for the sub!
Fantastically creative use of existing elements! Many thanks
Thanks! One of the goals of this channel is to show you original workflows that no one else has covered yet. That directly translates into creativity. Check for example my video on Text Displacement. Last year someone asked me if it was possible and I said no, and now I have a tutorial about it.
Always innovative
Thank you!
Молодец! Классная работа!!!
Thanks.
You’re the master! Period! Great video with super helpful and important information 👍
Thanks!!!
This isn’t yet one of those cases where I’ve been doing something for a while and they I realize that I haven’t seen any videos showing the method on CZcams.
Wow this is HUGE! Thank you!!
Easy and useful, right? At some point in the future I’ll publish another tutorial showing how to separate a video into Red Blue and Green channels and color grade them separately. For example you could apply a LUT just to the red channel.
Thanks 😊 mate very useful
Thanks!
Thank you soo much🎉 I am learning video editing from you😊
Glad to help!
You’re a genius, my friend. What a fantastic advice!!!
Thanks! I’m humbled. This tutorial allowed isolating either the shadows or the highlights. Check this other tutorial of mine that allows isolating the mid-tones: czcams.com/video/y78Y48-td18/video.html
That's smart, thank you for sharing!
Glad I could help! Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment!
This is so good!👍🏻
Thank you!
👍🏻 Great suggestion, also useful for implementing similar techniques. Thanks!
I’m glad it helps. Thank you for keeping watching!

Really nicely done Dani 🤙 🤗
Thanks! Looking forward to your next LumaFusion tutorial!
Awesome tutorial, this will be very useful!
Thanks! Glad to help. I also posted some additional examples of underwater footage here: czcams.com/video/-kICnvFTVNM/video.html
I love it

Thank you for watching ! You are welcomed to browse around. There are over 70 LumaFusion tutorials available in this channel.
I just saw your video in Kingscliff. Looks beautiful. Take a look at this example based on my last tutorial. You may find it useful: czcams.com/video/kuauZybsvqs/video.html
@@ManantialVE great!
Wow, you do amazing work with LumaFusion!
Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a comment! If you are up to it check the tutorial I posted today that shows how to create LumaFusion keyframe animations with ChatGPT.
@@ManantialVE Interesting will do!
@@TimelyAdventure Awesome! The option to verbalize your request and get a set of keyframes as a response from ChatGPT, with no calculations or knowledge has tremendous potential.
Thanks for your tutorials always explainable 👌👌👌
Thank you for noticing! I put a lot of effort on that.
@@ManantialVE I can imagine sometimes I get fed up with it
nice thank you for the idea..
Thanks! Always great hearing from you!
@@ManantialVE 😁😁😁
Well done bro
Thanks!
Amazing, thanks again now I know how to seperate the b&w and color ( I hope haha) using this method
Glad to help!
please make more video on the Selective color grading. Thanks
Thanks! It’s in the plans. Since this video was published, I made a small tutorial that expands on the Subject Behind Text aspect of the method: czcams.com/video/OIW_N32Ag0o/video.html
Oh wow, thank you very much! I was wondering how to do this as well! Quick question, is this the same as making the grass/trees a bit greener in a video? Thank you
Thank you for watching! If you want to change the saturation or brightness of a specific color I’d recommend using chroma key. Here’s an example from Restless Creative: czcams.com/video/CVnvv-hyXiI/video.htmlsi=bWRgpLb096lAI7WL
@@ManantialVE oh wow thanks for sharing this! Saved! Thank you!
@kaicastle. Anytime!
This would probably be great for color correcting my underwater footage!
In preparation for this video I did some preliminary testing using footage from an aquarium that worked well. Thanks for watching!
For me this would be color correcting for video’s made while freediving in lakes and hopefully in the Caribbien next week.
I’m curious now. I’ll give it a try too using StoryBlocks.
Here is what worked for me. I used footage of a diver underwater. I hope this is your kind of scenario . The whole scene, including the diver, has a bluish tint. I started with a mask that I reversed so the luma keys level slope goes from top to bottom. The mask included the diver and the lighter parts of the water and sea bed. Then, instead of correcting the topmost video making it brighter, I edited the video in the main track, lowering the brightness of the lighter parts of the image. Although I haven’t changed anything for the diver or sea bed, this made them pop against the now better contrasted light areas. I can post a video for you if you need help figuring out why I’m describing.
@@ManantialVE Can I send you a PM? Not sure if that's possible with CZcams.
Please make a video regarding video noise or grain on video
Thank you for watching. There’s not much you can do if the video if too grainy. I usually try a combination of Levels, Shadow Amount, Gaussian and Unsharp.
Outstanding video. You are a true gem. Can one achieve text behind an object if the object and background are black/dark? I want to have white text between the background and the object.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a comment!
It may, you’ll have to try. So far I posted 2 additional methods to create Text Behind Subject. One of them ought to do the job. Take a look:
Using Chroma Key: czcams.com/video/VSpbmXJm_Us/video.html
Using Blend Modes: czcams.com/video/xgQ2J8aQfCU/video.html
@@ManantialVE thanks for the reply 🙏 I tried your latest approach but could get it to work. But I will try using blending modes. I’m looking forward to more content from you ❤️
Yeah, if the object and background have similar color and brightness it may be a challenge.
Please make video on animation.
What do you mean?
Thanks a lot sir
My one question is to u how i am able use clip graphic of kinemaster in luma fusion is there any assest like that which i can use in luma
Thanks in advance
Thank you for watching. As long as you can export the graphic as a video, you would be able to use it in LumaFusion. If possible, add a green background so you can chroma key in LumaFusion.
@@ManantialVE thanks for the reply
Masking i mean like we do in davinci resolver for specific. Area like in snapseed we select specific area for color grading
And also one thing was in mind can be do masking of a moving person face like we can do in premier pro or resolver
Thanks in advance
There is no masking functionality in LumaFusion and as far as I know there are no plans for it in the near future.
Also there is no automatic tracking, but you can use Keyframes, hopefully relying as much as possible on interpolation. With that said there are ways to get somewhat close results. Here are some examples that I covered in some of my tutorials:
Masking using Chroma Key:
Split transition: czcams.com/video/8lIYOdgp1uI/video.html
Text behind subject: czcams.com/video/VSpbmXJm_Us/video.html
Masking using Luma Key:
Selective color grading:czcams.com/video/waY2aodncT4/video.html
Luma Fade transition: czcams.com/video/MM1W6gNeZtk/video.html
Masking using Lighter/Darker Blend Mode:
Text behind subject: czcams.com/video/xgQ2J8aQfCU/video.html
A bit of topic, if you are up to it, check my version of Displacement Mapping 100% done with LumaFusion here: czcams.com/video/G7pJlWdWExM/video.html
Wow really useful! Thanks
Thank you!
