- The long-awaited completion of Arid Canyon Zone was a big feature for version 2.2, however the zone has a storied history more complicated than most other levels in the game.

The Arid Canyon's 2016 Beta Act 2 look really challenging actually with the cart to manouver on the rails the entire stage.

the progression of SRB2 from ugly mess to looking like an actual sonic title is astounding
what's even more astounding to me is that this game is older than most of today's existing popular franchises in the game industry. Seriously the ammount of determination and work for this game is just ridicolous. It's propably the oldest Sonic fangame that's still standing to this day. This game is legit older than me by 5 years, it could buy itself a beer since 2016 (or 2019, depends on the country) . I almost feel like this game should geniuenly win some guiness record or something, for the oldest supported fangame in gaming history.

It didn’t win any awards from some judge, but it won the love and respect of every sonic fan for being one of if not *the* oldest, most supported and best sonic fan game still standing...

Like dont get me wrong, i bloody love this game so much, but my kids will have grandkids before this game will be finally finished.

@@StudioMetroProductions I think 2.2 will be the final version, like they finally revamped zones, soundtracks and characters. They only have to add an Act 2 to that Volcano Zone (I don't remember its name lol)

@@Azelf89 i believe theyre dark city zone and doomsday ship zone (though doomsday is gonna be renamed). theyre from a really old version of srb2.
Love how the 1998 version, with respect to the time it was released, seems actually better than some Android games of which we see ads on CZcams today.
Well, it has more effort put into it.
And as someone who played it, it's unironically 100x more fun that any shitty hypercasual trendy mobile game.
I gotta say, the idea behind Arid Canyon has got to be one of my favourite level designs for a Sonic game ever. It has that Route 66 Road Runner Vs Wile E. Coyote vibe, it's a wonder there's never been a level like it before.
Yeah, there is even a painted faux tunnel somewhere in the level.

TheAlanDude I guess someone didn't like Anakin very much.
In the end it makes sense with the mine part. The Mesoamerican Desert was a major part in the Gold Rush. And it also has the Grand Canyon (which could reference the Mountain aspect) and stretches of highway (as seen in act 1) and rail systems (as seen in act 2/3). It wouldve been cool to see a secret area with a ufo to represent Roswell. I also like the road runner reference in act 1.

This thing began development 2 years before I was born, was supposed to be done by 2001 when I was 1 year old, and it's still getting developed now that i'm 21. Just insane.
Srb2 is truly an astounding game and I can't wait to see where it goes from here. It's like the Sonic Xtreme we never got.

It’s finally here! Always love seeing these. Although I do wonder where the original wads of the ACZ2 Museum are, or where the mod creator got them in the first place. Also I could’ve sworn there were more acts in the ACZ2 Museum...
Thank you! Fickle got the maps as they were a developer at the time. There are more maps in the ACZ2 Museum however they are all earlier versions of the same map, and I didn't want to pad things out too much. My general philosophy with the retrospective has been to include every major release and only the final version of each prototype iteration... although aside from ACZ2 Museum the most there is are untextured versions of shown prototypes.

Not sure why but it’s kinda unsettling looking back at the old versions of this game. It’s just so empty and makes you feel like you’re alone but there’s that one person or THING that’s watching you. Especially if you where to take out the music in some of these clips specifically 3:56 this one in particular reminds me of an Abandoned MMO that still has that one weird server up

Interesting. Since I started playing this in 2.0 I never knew that Arid Canyon was a level merge of Mine Maze and Rocky Mountain. I did knew about those 2 scrapped levels but I never knew that those 2 were the origins of Arid Canyon

I remember the texture contest for Arid Canyon Zone. I even tried to participate in it, only to produce a texture that was too basic-looking (was just a quickly-drawn image in MSPaint).
If I’m being honest, 2.0 and 2.1’s music for this stage feels incomplete. It feels like it starts at the middle of a song rather than at the beginning.
Which makes sense, since it ended up becoming the middle of 2.2’s song for this stage.
Agreed. That unused remix in the files feels Full tho. Not fitting, but full.
I vastly prefer the 2.1 version, honestly. The melody feels a bit more clear.
This fangame never needed rtx. It's perfect. I really love the development process too. From how it started to how much it improved.

No, get 2.2, finish the 2 remaining levels, add transitions like there were in 2.0(actually intented feature) and then come back to 2001 and release It as a remaster. Then it's the best.
I imagine if everything was actually finished, would be pretty good, but not as much as how it is, or how it'll be when everything intented is done.

I think arid canyon is the most original zone in the entire sonic history, not only in srb2, the concept maybe is not unique, but in sonic work so well.

@Roberto Grigoraș but in combinatiom whit the highway and well, the canyon, make it a zone very funny to play in my opinion, i dont think that dust hill and mirage saloon have that originality. The only similarity is all of the zone have a desert theme, and the train (exept in dust hill)

Bro, if you wanted 2.0 beta content of ACZ1/ACZ2 (including their respective tunes), you could have just asked. There's a lot of historical content missing from this video, including Sonikku's ACZ2 and ACZ3. Roly Poly Putt is also missing, which is notable as part of its Arid Canyon tune made it BACK into SRB2....but this all originated with the ACZ remix tune from 2.0, and went unused! Sorry, I'm a bit of an ACZ archivist. :P

They should bring back Mine Maze and Rocky Mountain as totally new zones!

The maps were publicly released by the devs at some point.
There's a mod called demo quest in which it has all the levels of the original zone lineup before they got scrapped (it's on the message board btw)

It was a build released by the developers several years ago, they just don't know when it was created or what exactly it was created to be.
