idukki Dam is the first and one of the highest arch dams in Asia and the first arch dam in India.. Idukki dam built over the Periyar river between two rocky hills locally known as the Kuravan mala and the kurathi mala. it is a double curvature arch dam.
Idukki Dam owned by Kerala State Electricity Board. The biggest hydro electric project in Kerala is in Idukki. Installed capacity of Idukki hydro electric project is 780 MW. The Dam was commissioned by then prime minister of India, Indira Gandhi. Cheruthoni and kulamavu dam was constructed along with the Idukki dam. Moolamattom Power house is the longest under ground power house in India. The power house is located inside rocky cave . Moolamattom power house located 750 meters inside the Nadukani Hill. Idukki dam protects Ernakulam district and western parts of Trissur district from flood.

ഇപ്പോൾ ഡാമുകളിൽ 60%ത്തിൽ ഏറെ മണൽ നിറഞ്ഞു കിടക്കുകയാണ്. Dam Safety എന്ന വിഭാഗത്തിൽ നൂറു കണക്കിന് Civil എഞ്ചിനീയർമാർ പണിയെടുക്കാതെ ശമ്പളം വാങ്ങി തിന്നുന്നു. വെള്ളം കിടക്കാനുള്ള സ്ഥാനത്തു മണ്ണ് നിറഞ്ഞു കിടക്കുന്നതിനാൽ കറന്റ് ഉത്പാദനം 40%ത്തിൽ താഴെ മാത്രം. അതുകൊണ്ടാണ് കറന്റ് കടം വാങ്ങേണ്ടി വരുന്നതും ചാർജ് ഉയർന്നതും.

Idukki arch dam , the pride of India , the first of its kind in our country stands
tall as the biggest hydro electric project in India , which is situated in Idukki
district in Kerala acts as a biggest producer of electricity for the state of
Kerala. This fine video brings to the fore the whole history , how this amazing
dam came in to a reality after so many blockades spanning for many years .
The dam having an unbelievable height of 168.9 meters , took several years
for its completion , with a huge work force toiled hard day and night , which
saw the dream dam , the construction of which getting completed , in between
"Kuravan" and "Kurathi" hills by blocking the water of Periyar river. It was nice
to watch the video , apart from the invaluable information regarding the birth
of the dam , the breath-taking picturesque view of the hills and valleys were
beautifully captured in the camera , which turned out to be a spectacle
as viewers just enjoyed it.
