Tinny, Have you ever build a quinzhee? It's a snow shelter which was used by the Athabaskan Indians-just south of the Eskimo's. It's basically a big pile of snow that you carve out after waiting for one hour-the snow becomes more stable and safer. I've put stained glass windows into them-place water in a cookie sheet, add food coloring and freeze. They are incredibly warm to sleep in-no wind.

These shelters are excellent survival units. If in a pinch, a small one can be built using show shoes as shovels or even cross country skis.
