- After scanning the depths of the internet, books, lessons etc. I've concluded these are the agreed best guitar exercises.
You don't necessarily have to do them every day but rotate between them and your hands will glide across the fretboard
Now I'mma spam you with what I copy and paste to every video

N I T R O .
It’s always dudes with 7 inch fingers trying to give tips.
LMFAOOOOOO
My fingers aren't the biggest and ive been learning on a full sized guitar. There's really no excuses to be made, you just got to stay consistent and trust the process and things will start to fall into place.
We just gotta find the way around
Them long creepy crawler fingers lol
😂
A few tips, not necessarily exercises, that have helped me a lot with classical are:
1. Posture: Sit upright, back straight, body and shoulders in a T pose, neck straight and guitar held properly so that your arms and guitar form a Z pose. You want to aim for as little stress on your shoulders and joints as possible. Basically your shoulders should hang loose and the weight of your arm sustained by your lower back, which is why it's critical your back be straight.
2. Mirror: Get a tall mirror and place it in front of your playing position. This is going to allow you to see your mistakes as they happen while still in the proper sitting position (as in not hunched over looking at the guitar). This will also help dramatically with your posture. A very common issue is that over time you start to slump and get out of the proper sitting position. When your playing make eye contact with yourself in the mirror and you will find that you are much less likely to lose positioning.
3. Fingers & Nails: You want to use your nails, not a pick or the padding of your fingers. When you use a pick or pluck the strings you are moving your hand around a lot and it makes landing the right string a much harder accomplishment. If you have a mirror up and looking straight on your right hand should almost appear still while playing. You want to move your hand as little as possible, and your fingers should be making very light squeeze to roll the fingernail off the string. You need to shape your nails so that the release point is flat with the string, the area of the nail that rolls against the string should be polished and very smooth, down to the smallest detail.
4. Practice: Play often, but also break often. Try not to play for more than 30 minutes or an hour. If your playing too long you will start to wear out and you don't actually accrue new skills and it becomes a detriment. Breaking gives your body a brief rest and the ability for your mind to regroup. You will typically get better much faster by doing this. Especially if you are practicing to memorize a song or something.
5. Exercise your body: Playing guitar and most instruments is actually a very hard on your body if you are playing for long periods of time over years and years. Holding your body in this asymmetrical position is not good for you and music injuries are extremely common. My spine is curved incorrectly from over a decade of holding the guitar improperly, which I only realized later in life. If you plan to play over the course of your life the most important thing you can do to sustain being able to play is to take care of the body. If your body is brittle and contorted no amount of musical ability will allow you to play properly. Exercise and healthy playing are key.
thanks man appreciate it. i dont see people teach all of this in guitar videos when it is very important.
Just for the posture, I’m currently practicing on my bed, nearly on the back, bohemian style😂
Yes I agree, although I practice while sitting on the couch with my feet on the coffee table, whole watching t.v. I'm so relaxed I often fall asleep....
breaks uh? i'm gonna try that u know, i usually do at least 3-4 hrs sessions without breaks, until i'm reaaally tired. Maybe ur right, with breaks my brain could develop my skills faster, it makes sense, It's stupid but i didn't really think of this before

Hi Brandon! I'm 49 years young from Cape Breton and decided to actually LEARN how to play my guitar... instead of looking at it on a stand. I just found your channel and was delighted to hear that you're a St.FXU music grad!!! My twin cousins are also and always played in a band. Love your channel Brandon
Probably one of the most useful guitar tutorials I've seen. Thank you sir.

Being a previous dancer for five years and learning guitar about a month ago, already knowing tempo and rhythm has had a huge difference on my practicing
yeah, as someone who did dance for 13 and a half years, and did percussion in band back in middle school, my teacher was shocked to see how good i was at keeping rhythm at first

honestly, learning guitar before drums would make you a phenomenal drummer in most cases since you would have adapted to rhythm and stuff

Finally, some worthwhile and challenging workouts. Your the man Brandon!

Brandon, one of the most useful vids ever made. I now work on these everyday. Some days I despise you, most days I thank you. My accuracy, phrasing, pick attack, and neck range range have improved tenfold over the last two weeks. I've also gained more control over the tendency to overplay. So very much appreciated. Oh, and I heard you can play guitar...
I find myself searching for ways to warm up quite often. You have provided a plethora of warm up exercises.

I'm gonna be honest with you. You have some very interesting exercises. I really like them. I've been playing for over 3 decades and I am fairly knowledgeable in music theory, but as I get older and stuck in my routines I haven't truly exercised in a long time. My speed is way down from what it used to be. Some of your exercises are like nothing I've ever done. Thanks for taking the time to make such a great video. I truly appreciate it and will refer back to it often. PS, you're young, don't do what I did and get lazy, I was once really fast and limber and now I regret not keeping my fingers in shape.

I don't just use my shoulder, I take the martial arts approach and put my whole body into it. The energy for each stroke comes all the way from my feet up through my calves, upper legs, hips, core, shoulders, arms, and wrist, down to the pic
Wow! You understand martial arts principles. You, "uniformed" martial arts thinking and musical practice. Great unifying of two seemingly disparate fields. Your commixture of the martial arts and music sets an ecological path of thought.🔄🎸
@@user-xl4wo9gf8z yes, i call it "unified music theory" but unfortunately no guitar string can last more than one song due to the sheer power of each pick stroke. We need an engineering super genius to develope a set of strings that can withstand pick strokes raining down on them with the power of mike tysons right hook for 10 rounds

Thanks for the number three... Always has been a favorite number of mine...
1) 01:40 - simple 4 finger sequences
No let ring, don't lift fingers unless necessary, no staccato, mix-up variations
2) 03:28 - Anchor finger
Anchor finger on third string, do this with all finger anchoring variations. Mix up which on which string you're anchoring?
3) 04:36 - alternate picking + string Skipping
4 * e, 2 * b, 2 * g, try different strings? larger skips?
4) 05:58 - The Mcrocklin
for newbies - separate patterns and then play them together.
5) 08:20 - Staircase Chords (Satriani)
all across the neck, alternate between the chords, play across all the strings
6) 09:03 - Staircase Chords (Davis) with trailing note
Between every pick quickly raise and press all fingers. keep all fingers that shouldn't move in place
7) 10:40 - tempo counting
Low tempo for pros (count sub-divisions!). try other time signatures?
8) 12:56 - Staircase sweeps (Petrucci)
If can't sweep - play staccato. alternate between chord shape as you go
9) 14:23 - finger stretcher sequences.
Anchor first finger, then pick second finger, after that, third finger, after that, fourth finger, after that - take fourth finger an extra fret, etc. Then do the same with second finger as anchor.
Alternatively, you can trill. BONUS - Troy Stetina has a similar ex. done with trilling for finger strength rather then stretch/reach. it goes like this:
1-2. 1-3. 1-4.1-3. 2-3. 2-4. 3-4. 2-4.
The dash represents 4 pull of trills, i.e 1-2 = h2p1h2p1h2p1h2p1h
10) 16:00 - Finger spa

Damn you're so entertaining, even if you're talking about boring exercises
Thank you so much for teaching me how to count to four i had zero idea and now i do! Thank you!
I've never seen anyone suggest finger stretching exercises. A lot of great content. New sub.
One trick I found for me to not get too bored with exercise #1 is to just listen to my normal music feel the beat and just doing the exercise in quarter notes while switching to eight notes in the chorus back and forth. Once I get more agile I may switch to eights -> sixteenths.
Of course what note subdivisions you choose to play will vary since quarter notes in some songs will be close to eights in others (in terms of speed) so play around with what works best for you, maybe try starting with half notes to quarters. I will say though, if you're a "from zero" beginner and your sense of rhythm is not as developed it may be better to stick with the metronome, this is just what works for me.
For the metronome exercise, watch lots of solid drummers play and really focus on the phrasing how the drummers play. Imagine like you're playing those drums.
Now put the metronome on and imagine having a drummer in your head playing on that tempo. Kick drums, snares etc. and all. I like to imagine Simon Phillips, Jonathan Moffet or Jeff Porcaro to play me a beat on the tempo of the metronome. And then start playing. Now my body kinda reacts to tempos physically like a clockwork and there's drummer playing in my head everytime I need to keep my timing tight. Helps a lot when you're bassist, who's learning guitar.
My gooood i love this. I found it better to level up when i am losing interest buy figuring out reppetitive and easier excercises. Thank uou thank you
Great tips! 🔥🔥
