Started today with HA. I used Fibaro for about 12 years but when I saw one of your videos it made me open my eyes. I really love your videos. Very well explained. I’m a big fan 👍👍👍👍
Not sure if this came with a recent update (i really don't think but i'm not sure) but i solved the peak off peak problem in a quite easier way. I always thought using the utility meter is way to complicated to solve such a trivial problem as peak/off peak tariffs. I also don't like scripting and such stuff. Automation is my hobby not tinkering the tool to automate😂. Therefore i use the following approach. It would be nice to hear what you think and if there are maybe some caviats i do not see at the moment. Created a input number helper min./max // 0/1. Actual setting 0.36 Chf/kWh (there has to be some value if i rem. Correctly). Then i use the helper as "use entity with current price" in energy meter. End of part 1 Part 2: Create an automation which uses a service call "input number:set" to change the value of the helper accordingly to the day time. So 2 time triggers... finito! As mentioned... i think this is a way easier and more straight forward approach as the utility meter stuff. BR PS: I like your videos... don't stop🙂🖖

I heat my house with Natural gas and at the start of a working day (we both work from home) our offices get a heat boost with our COP 5 airco units. To track my gas consumption I've implemented an average indoor temperature (coming from 13 sensors) and an average outside temperature (coming from Buienradar) per day. The daily M3 used natural gas is divided by the difference between the average outside and inside temperature giving me a M3 usage per 'graaddag'. I have an old detached house which is as much as possible insulated (walls, roof, floor, HR++ glass, etc.) and can track and benchmark my gas usages. A historical overview of my M3 per 'graaddag' is not yet realized as I'm struggling to do the calculations at the correct moment ;) Since I use the Airco units to boost the office temperature I still have to implement the airco energy usages ;)
Great tutorial as always! 😊👍 How about continuing a long the same line of your recent 3 tutorials (including this one) and combining the actual hourly energy usage with the hourly energy prices in ApexCharts (trying to do that as I'm writing this). Would be a great visualization for the energy score.😉
Hi, out of curiosity why do you use YAML for the utility meter and not a helper? Is there a benefit? I am rebuilding my HA after a disaster (and my backups were corrupt) and I was using YAML before for this. Monitoring energy has really been an eye opener for me, and I found out my older smart TV's were taking loads when switched off, first hit was automating the power supply to these 😊
Oh! I totally forgot about the helper option! I always used the configuration.yaml route and never looked into the helper for r this. Just totally forgot about that possibility. Thanks for making me aware of this.
@@SmartHomeJunkie I did wonder, you usually champion the use of the helpers, one thing I noticed is it has used my history too, it didn't start recording only when I created the helper.

Hi Ed, I have two meters (the previous owner had different price at night then during the day). So now in Home Assistant I have two tarifs, but we decided to go for the same tarif all day. Only the meter still is giving tarif 1 and tarif 2. I thought I just add the second tarif in Studio Code Server. But then it says duplicate key while one ends on tarif1 and the other ends on tarif 2. How can I combine these?
@@SmartHomeJunkie Allright thanks for the great tip. So I made a group of the two sensors (energy consumption) I filled in “sum” when I created it. But now it counts the total of the two meters. So now it says I used 21696 kWh of power 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 In stead of sum what is your advice to choose when creating the helper? The normal energy dashboard keeps track of the normal kWh and m3 usage per day.
@@SmartHomeJunkie yes of daily consumption, now it’s pulling just the numbers straight out of the meter 🤣🤣🤣 so meter one is 11.000 kWh and meter two is 10.000 kWh. Is it possible to sum up the daily usage somehow?

Where do I get the prices from? / How can I maintain my kWh prices?
You get the prices from your energy provider of your energy provider is supported by Home Assistant.
You can also use Nordpool or ENTSO-e to get the prices. See my other videos about this subject for this.

I think a solution can be to create a "Combine the state of several sensors" helper that sums both values.
