Who would have thought, 42 years ago when I came out, that there would be a show like this on TV, and that people would love it, and that, when the kiss came, orchestral music would play to enhance it. Who would have thought.

It's like all of the times I watched the Prince and Me except...it's finally two women, in a TV series, as the main characters, and not some small release lesbian film that is only known to people in the community.
They can keep that Bridgerton nonsense. Give me GentleMan Jack. The writing, the humor, the 4rth wall acting, the wardrobe. Phenomenal.

When Ann says her sister said that "often a good friendship is better than a marriage", I think Anne looks a bit wounded because she really wants marriage and not just friendship with Ann. Such a perfectly acted scene. Not like acting at all really đ€·đ»
I agree. She's brilliant. The little "mmh" when AW says she won't say no. The heartbreaking "don't hurt me. I'm not as strong as you think," and the comedic "well, I am, obviously" it's just perfect!
True, but at this time most marriages were based on position and financial need or whatever, rarely love. So I think the sister meant that a real relationship, friendship or more, was better than a marriage for marriageâs sake.

As someone who has been in relationships where someone ends up just wanting to be friends, it breaks. Because that physical intimacy has already been shared, but due to outside expectations and fears of being found out, wanted to be âfriends.â Nothing is more crushing. Especially because with women, there is an incredible emotional intimacy. And when a woman wants to keep that emotional intimacy and dependency without the commitment because theyâre scared, they want to keep you as close as a lover without being oneâŠshit hurts. I actually felt the hurt than Anne must have felt. Heartbreaking.

What a Powerhouse of a Woman Anne Lister was. Suranne Jones inhabits her. She is so immersed in her character that I don't see an Actor playing a part, I just see the embodiment of Anne Lister. I've never had that kind of reaction to an Actor & their role before. It makes the series all the more compelling. I've definitely fallen for Anne Lister & I might just have a wee soft spot for Suranne now too :)

It is easy to underestimate the importance for lesbians - and all gays - to see representatives of themselves in the tv shows and movies of the day. This is passion-filled, not gratuitous, an embodiment of real love. A greater gift is hard to imagine. It is also fun and entertaining, uplifting, and tingly. Thanks to all involved.

I love how Anne, in the middle of a heavy and passionate moment, made the interaction more lighter by talking casually about her hilarious experience in Denmark. She knows Ann would love that because that's how Ann fell in love with her in the first place.

BBC please don't give up on this show, it means so much to see this story
This scene - this episode, this whole series - means so much to me and that scene completely destroyed me, it had me crying and shouting of joy, beaming from ear to ear, and made my heart grew ten times bigger with love. Itâs just so perfect: Annâs soft â... I wouldnât say noâ and âyesâes, Anneâs âI donât think one hour passed where i didnât think of youâ & her âDonât hurt me, Iâm not as strong as you think... well, I am obviously, but... sometimes Iâm notâ, the kiss, music, lighting; the chemistry between Suranne and Sophie is killing me (and what absolute excellent actresses they are!).
Both showing so much love and pain, and confidence and vulnerability.
Or before that scene, Anne stopping to run away from her broken heart and Ann taking control over her life and decisions in her hand; and after that, their wedding and them already bickering like an old married couple.
As a big history and period dramas and biopics fan and a gay woman myself (who also loves romance stories), period shows/movies with queer characters are, like, my favourite genre. And getting this classical-epic-super-romantic-hilltop-kiss with these two beautiful, courageous women (even better, knowing they really existed) and seeing them marry (as âmuch/realâ as was possible) in 1834 is truly cathartic!
Gentleman Jack gave me everything Iâve ever wanted from period dramas & shows with LGBTQ+ characters and more. Iâll never get tired of watching this show and this scene. THANK YOU, everybody involved in GJ! (And yaaay to the confirmed S2!)

Crescent I think they already confirmed it in May, I think Iâve read in on the showâs Twitter and then there were articles about it. Filming will start next year and the release is probably gonna be in 2021 or maybe late 2020, IIRC. SO HAPPY weâre about get more GJ!

The changes in their facial expressions when AL notices AW wearing the gondola pin and says âGod, Iâve missed you.â absolutely make my heart flutter. They go from aggressive and timid, right back to being intimate. Sophie and Suranne are amazing.
The Hilltop scene is quite possibly my all time favorite scene in anything that I have watched. I love that I can watch it completely out of context at any moment and I still end up being a crying mess at the end. Itâs a masterclass in direction, camera movement, writing, and acting!
I just randomly watched it after not seeing it since I re-watched S1 before S2 came out. Tears streaming down my face, yet again. This scene is perfection.

There's something about how Anne looking rather unkempt and being emotionally distraught here that really has my heart aflutter. I honestly can't explain it but the way she looks and acts in this scene, being so openly vulnerable, well, it's the most handsome, beguiling, and devastating she's ever been throughout the whole series.

If I was to be in a terrible accident tomorrow, no one would keep my spouse from my hospital bedside because they are my legal spouse. No one doubted my spouse's involvement in my care when I suffered a stroke. It's assumed that my spouse is the person to speak in my stead, if I am not capable of it. Without some meaningless piece of paper, my parents might legally be able cut my partner completely out of decisions because they would be 'next of kin'.
I mean just imagine one day you clean your house, find out a diary belongs to your great great great grandma's sister who was gay, had a freaking badass lifestyle and such gorgeous wife.
This dialogue is all so hard to act. I mean, it really needs great actors to pull this off and make it seem natural, off the cuff, sincere and deeply felt. They're so good.

Also let me just say the reason I admire my gay sisters is simply because when shitt like the aids epidemic was happening they were so active in helping our males counterparts who were deeply affected by it whenever something happened in our community they have been so active in providing a helping hand so yes I love my gay sisters and without them some privileges we have today as queer people wouldn't be possible without them.

I watch this show with my grandmother and its just interesting how she can understand that a relationship between two women can be the same as a relationship between a man and a woman. She still thinks I'm going through a phase, but I'm sure watching something as beautiful as this helps her understand things a lot better. I'm thankfull for this show in so many ways, and it just adds to it all when you realize how wonderful the acting is and how natural the chemistry is between each of the characters. Ready for season 2!!! đ
That's a really lovely way to go about helping your grandmother understand. Sometimes people don't even know why they are against something until it's normalized in their head. Then they realize they weren't really against it, just whatever bad they thought it was.
Forget about Titanic, forget about all love stories, I've never ever in my life seen something more authentic, better acted or better told than this! It touches my heart and soul on a level no movie ever has! I want Gentleman Jack come back to our screens! The Ann(e)'s deserve it, the actors and Sally do! Every person on earth should watch it at least one time in their lives! It is SO MUCH MORE than a lesbian love story!! It came into my life like an earth quake! Seriously, if I can't find a girlfriend like Anne, I will forever stay single!

Veronica Dobozi I am as well. Sophie Rundle gave such a nuanced performance as Ann Walker. She exhibited fragility, vulnerability, uncertainty as well as some mental instability and did it all very convincingly. Kudos to one so young for bringing the gravitas to this role that it deserved. I sincerely hope Sophie is rewarded come BAFTA time!!

Man In An Orange Shirt didn't win let alone get nominated, and Crystal Chappell didn't get a Daytime Emmy Award for her role as Olivia Spencer when she told Natalia Rivera on her Wedding Day to Frank Cooper she was in love with her on Guiding Light.

Youâre not the only one who was disappointed. I cannot fathom how Suranne Jones didnât get an Emmy nomination as best actress in a drama series. She absolutely embodied Anne Lister; she owned the role and the range of emotions she had to portray is phenomenal. I think an injustice has been done. Letâs hope the BAFTAs correct this injustice

At this rate, it appears I will watch this scene everyday for the rest of my life. Just really noticed the look on Anne's face when she notices the gondola pin at 1:44. It's this expression of "wow, you really did miss me, you may actually love me." It's SO INCREDIBLY SUBTLE because Suranne Jones is absolutely brilliant, but it's there and I felt like crying all over again because this scene explodes my gay heart.

I'll never get tired of this ending, or indeed their whole story, and will absolutely be watching this season plenty more times (I'm already at three) until season two. What a beautiful story of these phenomenal people, and it's so incredible that their story is finally being told by such a committed team of people, all those writing and creating, as well as these phenomenal actresses giving so much to their roles and telling such a believable love story.

@Los Lobos 1 only 10% was artistic freedom, the rest is based on real life events taken from Anne Listers very detailed diaries, often they even say things out of the diary.
Los Lobos 1 like youâre babbling for no reason. Itâs an excellent show. It doesnât need to be 100% historically accurate, itâs not a documentary. Relax a little and enjoy the show.

Simply blown away by the love these two actors portray. How can they not feel it as much as their audience? Just a little tingle now and again must happen somewhere along all of their amazing scenes together. They are both rich in their performances and seem to nearly channel the Anne & Ann of so long ago. Looking forward to S2. Richly enjoying Sally Wainwright's desire and vision in telling a story she wanted to see for herself. I love reading the Helena Whitbread volumes of the Lister diaries and all that entails. Big sigh, huge inspiration.

Phenomenal show. And whilst I get the majority of people are talking about the lesbian storyline, I think Anne Lister would STILL be worth knowing about even if she hadn't been gay. Because in a time when women were rarely seen let alone heard & got treated like property or as if they were brainless/helpless, Anne was a property owner, managed that property, mucked in with the workers, travelled independently & dressed as she liked - to name a few reasons. Oh, and didn't suffer fools gladly, especially men who thought they could get away with being patronising or swindling, just because Anne was female. Suranne Jones especially, but also Sophie Rundle, deserve every award going for their portrayals of Anne & Ann, they've given us some of the best TV I've seen in I don't know how long.... Looking forward to series 2!

I'm an empath, I'm picky about what I watch because I can't get properly invested in something if the acting (or writing for books) comes across as ingenuine. I've lost count of how many times I've watched this clip because I can feel the characters' emotions and mood shifts throughout the entire scene, the acting is SO GOOD, some of the best I have ever seen. Especially Suranne Jones; I can read Anne Lister's thoughts in her face and body language, every time she wants to give in to her love for Ann but then literally steps away from her because she's afraid of being hurt, how she distracts Ann from noticing how upset she is at being just 'a friendship' to her or dwelling on her slashed wrist by telling self-deprecating stories about herself. The way she plays a strong character who is on the verge of falling apart and trying to hide it is masterful; that little noise she makes after Ann says she 'wouldn't say no' has more emotional conveyance in it than some entire actor's monologues. So incredible.
I've been watching this scene and repeating like 10000x and it never gets old. It's so beautiful and ah... I can't even explain how this show means to me and all the LGBTQ community. Thanks for everything Sally Wainwright, the cast and crew, BBC One. â€ïž Best lesbian drama EVER. I'm still crying and I can't wait for second season.

The entire episode of the season finale was exquisite - this scene was the best of the episode - Emmy worthy to be sure. Ann Walker's whimpering was a bit over the top throughout but she pulled herself together at the end and emerged in charge and intact. A stupendous series with Suranne Jones clearly relishing the role.

The most beautiful love story I've ever watched! Gentleman Jack is an outstanding show all round but this scene is everything. Sophie is wonderful and Suranne is an absolute legend, she was born to play Anne Lister.

That noise Suranne Jones makes, drives me insane and i'm straight! She was wonderful in this part and should have won every award going.

Suranne Jones as Anne Lister is a breathtaking character and an extremely attractive woman who dominates the whole screen ..if Sophie wasnât such a great actress performing Ann with such tenderness, weakness but also with such grace and humility, the screen would totally absorb her.....instead sheâs everywhere..all over..firmly present and devoted..Gosh..the two of them together are just adorable ....
