  • When Ireland's President Michael D. Higgins spoke to reporters outside his residence on May 2, his pet Bernese mountain dog completely stole the show. The dog was caught on camera trying every trick in the dog book to get Higgins' attention, to little, adorable avail.

    Irish person here, and yes, Michael D Higgins IS a lovely person, and a good president. He recently celebrated his 80th birthday.
    The dog's name is Misneach (Mish-nock), which is Irish for courage, and she's also lovely.

    This is Ireland’s magic at its finest The president himself, with the acorn in the background is “obviously” a chieftain leprechaun 🍀 who remains unperturbed by the call for attention of his assistant and loyal companion and with exemplary resilience manages to keep reciting his fabulous tales to his audience of elfs, gnomes and fellow leprechauns… absolutely fantabulous !

      Fun fact: The true leader of Ireland (Not the president, the president is only a figurehead) is called the Taoiseach, which is actually Irish for chieftain. Though, most non-Irish people just call him the Prime Minister.

      That was the first thing that came to mind. He was sooooo kind to his dog. Some people whod have shouted at the dog or made them mgo away. THe dog wanted to enjoy being with his master and the master wanted the dog to enjoy being with him so he engaged with his dog. What a wonderful, relationship to watch. The dog seemed so very happy to be there and felt so free to play and be loved. What a kind, kind man. It was mezmerising to watch. Loved it.

    For anyone who’s not Irish, he has **two** Bernese Mountain dogs called Bród(pride) and Síoda(silk) and and they’re the absolute cutest. Síoda died recently, so he now has a five month old puppy called Misneach(courage)

    Dogs are a good judge of character. He loves his human dad. My dad just passed a few days ago. When I saw this it lifted my spirits. He loved dogs and would have enjoyed seeing this. I miss him so bad already.

    What is most telling, aside from the president’s composure and focus, is his loving tolerance for his buddy’s natural doggo behavior. Not one of his moves shows any annoyance whatsoever; no attempt to push him away or scold him. And clearly the doggo is used to chopping on his hand. I have an Australian Cattle Dog that does the same and attempts to lead me to what he wants - which is usually outside to throw the frisbee for him. LOL

But, sometime between 3pm and 5pm, I will take both my dogs out to their favorite big field (owned by a local farmer that allows me) to let them run without leashes and I’ll throw the frisbee for him and a ball for his black lab sister (she’s just not interested in the frisbee) and we’ll all get our exercise for the day. This happens rain or shine because I love my dogs and they love me! Cheers
