  • In this diy episode i show you the best way of installing an oem big brake upgrade from an mk4 337 or 20th gti and mk4 1.8t gli
    This upgrade is for increased rotor size for the mk3 vr6 brakes but if you have a 2.0 brake setup you get much larger pads/rotors/calipers
    The modifications needed to fit these brakes are a 6.5mm spacer behind the brake caliper carrier to space it back due to the offset of the 312 rotor.
    This is a fantastic upgrade for any mk3 and since i have a 1.8t swap its was a much needed upgrade
    In this videoi also show how to install solid brake carrier stiffners and explain the benefit of them
    Must have a minimum of 16”wheel to clear the brakes

    312 carriers (fit either side) 1J0615125
    1J0615123C driver caliper
    1j0615124c pass caliper (can use any 288 mk3 or mk4 caliper
    Pads (312mm and 288mm rotors) 1J0698151M

    I love these videos. I’m doing a mk3 1.8t engine swap and I’ve been researching doing a 312mm brake upgrade with very little info. I assumed the carrier is different and to see your videos is like you’re reading my mind. Thanks for the information.

      I believe when i did the 312mm years ago i bought the mk4 dust shields
      But this time i just kept the dust shields from the (vr6 mk3 brakes)
      Make sure you beat them good with a hammer, took many times so they would stop rubbing the rotor

    Bro I've been looking everywhere for the 312 mm brake disk, you have no idea how much headache you saved me. For some reason when I got the car the car docs said that they were Mk4 Audi tts brakes but those suckers are 320 mm. I'ma go and order me some Mk4 GLI rotors now!

    Sweet video, been wanting to do a brake upgrade to my MK3 TDI Golf but I want to keep my 15in wheels so I may stick to going up to the 288mm rotors (currently has 256mm)

      Yea thats your best bet. And you get a much better caliper.
      And in the future to go to 312 youd already have the correct calipers

    Thank you for the amazing video I definitely need to do this to my 98 gls….slowly adding till I have a R32 swap in it. I’m new to the VW’s as I have been a Honda/Acura fan since I was 18 years old now I’m 44 and I’m tired of fucking thieves ruining my builds so I’m a Mk3 jettas fan now! Wish to lean as much as possible especially in the wiring harness as that is my least favorite thing to do, lol! Quick question where do you recommend finding all the accessories listed for the brake swap excluding brake pads, calipers but mainly the additional items for a nice clean modification?! Thank you!

      Appreciate it
      If you cant find good used mk4 gli/20th calipers/carriers
      Then you can buy mk1 audi TT 225 front brake parts.
      Its the same as the gli/20th but not painted red

      They are old school esm 16x7.5 had them for about 8 years and bought them used. Lots of miles, ive cracked them and rewelded them a few times lol
      Im in the middle of buying a house, hopefully ill be able to do the 3.6 there, unfortunately itll be a bit so ill have some more updates on the 3.6 its self before the swap begins

    I plan on doing the same brake setup on my 98 mk3 gti vr6. What stainless steel front lines would work since I am using all mk4 calipers and the car is a mk3. I know there are two different banjo bolts for the mk3 and mk4.

    • @SmithsEuro
      @SmithsEuro  Před 2 lety +1

      If you have a vr you already have correct lines they are the exact same caliper just one is painted red.
      Only difference is the carrier.
      Mk3 vr6 front lines (mk4 ones work but are a tad long)
      Cheap way for mk4 rear calipers are to buy b5 passat rear lines work perfect 8$ compared to the 65$ “swap lines”

      @@SmithsEuro Ok because I just bought the mk4 calipers for the 312mm setup the anniversary ones because I thought you needed the mk4 caliper to work with the mk4 rotors on a 98 vr. I saw on vortex that the mk3 vr front lines work but you need the banjo bolt from the mk4 312mm in order for it to work because the threads are different

    I noticed you’re using non abs master cylinder. Is there any significant difference between not having abs for this size brake and caliper?

    • @SmithsEuro
      @SmithsEuro  Před 3 lety +1

      Mk3 non abs masters work fine, i dont know the exact size or if there are any differences.

      I also have rear disks in the back.

      My vr6 hasnt had an air filter for 7 years.
