This film explains the taking of Carentan on June 12th 1944 by the 101st Airborne Division, focusing on the role of E/506th PIR. This was depicted in episode 3 of Band of Brothers, the incredible HBO series. Filmed on location in Carentan, Normandy and using many rare wartime images and pieces of film, this WW2TV presentation offers insight into the real events.
The film is narrated by Kevin Hymel, historian and author, based on one of his many magazine articles. In this case an October 2018 issue of War History warfarehistorynetwork.com/.
Kevin is also a tour guide for Stephen Ambrose Tours stephenambrosetours.com/ and regularly leads tours to the European battlefields.

Ed Tipper was my high school English teacher. We never knew why he limped or had a glass eye until Band of Brother came out. This video actually shows him being treated for his injuries. What heroes they all were.
Wow. It's a heart stopping moment in the series.
Thanks for telling your story. My middle school English teacher would show us where he got shot. But being that young, we didn't quite get it.
Ed Tipper - what a great hero. I can't imagine the pain he went through and had to endure while still continuing to be shot at.

What a memory, friggen amazing. I had a junior high teacher that couldn’t take seeing any German symbol and back then it was just jewelry, an expression...”crap, he said, all of it is nazi!...”
Excellent! Thank you!
Great commentary. I visited Normandy riding a cross channel ferry from Portsmouth England, in 1998; 3 years before the filming of BofB. I remember the paratrooper mannequin hanging from the steeple of the church in Ste. Mare Eglise. Now more than ever, I want to go back.
Delighted to see the more than 305,000 views of this WW2TV program. (Noticed it as I listen to, catch up, on Australia Week with DDay New Guinea).
This video inspired me to go rewatch the BOB Caretan episode for the 100th time last night. It was great to see how many moments (a bunch) referenced in this video are in the actual episode. Thks to History Underground for recommending this channel
Well done. My family visited Normandy in 2015 and I wished we had seen this beforehand.
Woody/Kevin. Whilst Woody is on his working holiday, I delved into the archives and found this gem. Fabulously delivered. I felt that I was there. It reminded me a little of Woody’s walk about! The style and content of this presentation was great and could be repeated??? Bob
Excellent !
I was there last summer and had my pic taken on the road into Carentan and around the square. I was only in Normandy for four days and could have stayed for four months to see all I wanted to see. Learned more about what I missed after I returned. There was so many heroes in the 101st in that campaign.
Absolutely outstanding documentry.
If only the History Channel was this comprehensive. Excellent.

So true! I’ve enjoyed watching the History channel especially this past year but a lot of information is lacking.
@@angelaschwenn9595 this is so much better than the history channel, my friend! and just think of all the books we are discovering...
@@loreleikomm5802 You are definitely on the money! You can never have too many well written books right?
@@angelaschwenn9595 yes ma’am !
That was great! Thank you.
Bob Rader is a local hero, going into teaching at elementary and high schools, and also at the local Boys School Reformatory (juvenile hall). At his passing, the entire town turned out to commemorate a newly rebuilt bridge, that is a main artery over a river, named in his honor. Joe Toye and Babe Hefron, and Don Malarkey were there to remember their friend and brother.
Thanks for sharing
and his son works at our local library!
I watched this video three times, so much going on ! Well done thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow.This WAS THE GREATEST GENERATION,in SO many words. This documentary was BETTER THAN A MOVIE-
Oh nice! I remember Kevin from highschool in Washington DC. Kevin SJC class 84' , me Pablo (Paul) 86' well done Kevin!
What a great video direct and to the point through the entire assault, it was like I was there.
Thank you for that. Not sure if you have already but you should do the narration for all of their battles.
I am so fortunate to have heard first hand the stories of my father in law (USN WWII) and also my brother's father in law (USMC WWII). Both of them rarely talked of their war time experience to anyone and never told the whole story to anyone normally leaving out the gruesome parts. They told me everything and it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. RIP Brownie & Norm we miss you! FLY NAVY!!!
My grandpa was the leader of a 12 man scout team and was shot by a German sniper, shooting from the bell tower of a church in Carentan. Fortunately grandpa survived, but his life was cut short due to injuries. 83rd Div. 331st. Company M.
The maps helped a lot. I also enjoyed seeing how these places currently look in comparison with the old film footage. Very well put together.
Brilliant commentary. Actually in Carentan now, so this information is invaluable.
Great video! Thanks.
Thank you YT for suggesting this video. It was excellently done, I enjoyed every second of it. The details are great.

This was excellent. A great companion piece to Band of Brothers.
Great presentation, and the first time I've seen that style on @WW2TV. Great narration from Kevin.
Your voice over on this video is absolutely fantastic and this is what we need to be teaching these young kids in school so the people understand the sacrifice and what it took to give them their freedoms that they have today because if they don't learn this then our society is doomed
I understand and agree but doomed? I think this newer generation lacks alot of respect and its mostly me Mr. Doomed though seems a little harsh if they don't learn about what all these Brave men did
@@jasonfarmer4490 the woke far left liberal education system doesn't teach things like this. They teach kids that America is a racist country and that everything about America is oppressive and that is why these brainwashed individuals know or care nothing about the greatest generation or what brave men and women sacrificed to give them the freedoms that they take for granted.
I graduated 8 years ago or so, but when I was in school, WW2 was covered at least 5 times over the years
Great Job on this video, not a single moment is wasted here.
Have learned more about WWII and the 101st from the internet than ever from my Dad, who was the 502nd PIR S3. Have seen some things mentioned by my Dad at times. I do know he fought with LTC Cole on D-Day which is something in itself.
amazing detail thank you.
Man, that was so good. Now do this for every battle, ever! ;) THIS is the type of stuff we need to really bring battles to life in a Then-and-Now-type of way.
I cant believe this channel doesn't have 500k subs. Great documentary.
If anyone ever has the pleasure to stay in Carantan, the Hotel 101st on the Rue Holgate is a highly recommended place to stay, Nancy, the owner, is a great host and the hotel is a surviving building in the town
And it’s close proximity to all of the other historic places is superb 👍🏻
Thank you historian and author Kevin Hymel for this incredible film and all its detail.
And thank you WW2TV - Paul Woodadge for another excellent show - what you are doing with your WW2TV is truly unique and extraordinary.
totally agree with you!
Great documentary!!
Outstanding detail.... fascinating commentary. Thank you so much, from Auckland, New Zealand 🇳🇿 RH
Well done!!!!
Hope you do more, makes a listener feel like he's there.
really one of the best ever documentaries i saw with photos from where they attack and some details what soldiers said
that is a solid format for a documentary hope you can make more like this in the future
your work needs to be placed in schools around the country. This is excellent how you do your editing.
Thank you
It would be even better if it tied in with more German soldiers photos, names and accounts, if they exist. Amazing work all the same.
@@yieldtothenight if you have details of the names of Germans in the battle, please let me know. There is very little information about individual Germans
Very nice video, clear and concise; the photos and video are great also.
Your narrative and graphics felt like I was right beside these men, the buildings and roads right in front of me. Great job! 👍👍
Best WW2 video on CZcams!
Thank you
A very good presentation on the battle. Thank you very much.
This is fast becoming my favorite channel. Great work! Hope to see the Central Pacific campaigns starting with Tarawa.
Welcome aboard! We will have some Tarawa content later this year
Thank you for a great video. Mixing current actual locations, historic document film and portraits of the participants makes this outstanding.
I remember this battle from the series Band Of Brothers. God Bless these heroes memory. !
Very interesting video. I loved Band of Brothers. The visual pictures help you feel like you were actually viewing the battle. It makes you appreciate the skill and bravery of the Airborne divisions. Great work.
Was a very good video. Good job.
This is truly a masterpiece! Kudos.
"You know, this D-day thing has a very special meaning for me. And I'm not referring merely to the anxieties of the day. The anxieties that were a natural part of sending in an invasion where you knew that many hundreds of boys were going to give their lives or be maimed forever."
"But, my mind goes back so often to this fact;
On D-day my own son graduated from West Point, and after his training and with his division he came over with his division, but that was some time after."
"But, on the very day he was graduating these men came here, British, Americans, and our other Allies to storm these beaches for one purpose only;"
"Not to gain anything for ourselves, not to fulfill any ambitions that America had for conquest, but just to preserve Freedom. Systems of self-governance in the World."
"Many thousands of men, and women, have died for ideals such as these."
"And here again, in the 20th Century for the second time Americans, along with the rest of the free World, but Americans had to come across the oceans to defend those same values."
"Now, my own son has been very fortunate, he has had a very full life since then. He is a father of four lovely children that are very precious to my wife and me."
"But these young boys, so many of them, over whose graves we tread, looking at and wondering, contemplating about their sacrifices, they were cut off in their prime."
"They have families that grieve for them, but they never knew the great experiences of going through life like my son."
"I devoutly hope that we will never again have to see such things as these. I think and hope and pray that humanity has learned more than we had learned up until that time."
"But, these people gave us a chance, and they bought time for us so that we could do better than we had before."
"So, every time I come back to these beaches, or any time that I think of that day, so many years ago now, I say we MUST find some way to work towards peace and to gain an eternal peace for this World."
---Former President and Supreme Allied Commander General Dwight D. Eisenhower, while visiting the D-day Memorial Cemetery in Normandy, France on the 20th anniversary of the D-day invasion; "Operation; Overlord." June 6th 1964 🇺🇲
And as I’m writing this in the 21st century and 1000s of people are getting killed in Ukraine and the threat of world war is hanging over us again! What was it all for? What a waste of lives 😢😭😭😭😭😭
Excellent narration, visuals, and editing.
What a great account you have done a lot of research on this battle
Beautiful!
I could listen to this for hours!
Great vid ! This battle is now playable on PC in the game, Post Scriptum. The game map exactly represents the actual streets and buildings and it's a meat grinder for both sides. The courage of those men who fought there was amazing. In Caen, the British lost a man for every yard they gained. Good thing the German commander at Carentan had pulled out most of his troops !
These names r so familiar after band of brothers series ✌️
Incredible video thank you so much for this. So well done!!!
Outstanding work, congratulations WW2TV.
Great episode Paul. I’m trying to think how many times have I walked past where Tipper was wounded and I never even knew!🤦🏻♂️
Superb explanation of the battle, I liked the format and the level of detail surpasses anything else I’ve seen. My one suggestion would be to leave the maps up a second longer for those of us with slower brains to absorb. I wonder why they didn’t go right flanking over that bank rather than up the road. Happy to be a subscriber.
Paul, I've watched this for the nth time. Can't get enough of your tours. WW2TV or otherwise.
I am glad to have found this channel and community, too.
Wow, quality content right here! I shared it with other WW2 enthusiasts and Hell Let Loose, Post Scriptum players.

just found you. This is truly brilliant
Totally enjoyed this glimpse back in time. Thanks!
Really good story. Got to give you props on the production value of this upload. Best audio I've ever heard on CZcams 👍🏆
Unbelievably two men from same neigborhood of south Philly on that east company squad. We are proud! Garneri and Babe Heffron
Amazing video. Thank you. The sound effects and visuals are perfect
wow, thank you for your hard work, I love ww2 history and the band of brothers
what a good video
Great work! Excellent!
excellent video. love the history on easy company (band of brothers did that Carentan scene very well according to this video. Fantastic work.
Top quality video- THANKS!
Was in Carentan twice over the past few years (I live nearby in Ireland) and although I knew a decent amount of the history which made for a fascinating couple of visits, I wish I had seen this video first and had it with me as I went about.
I will definitely be havng this video on my fone the next time I can go.

Outstanding. I love how you describe the terrain and operations by pointing out the locations/phase lines. More please!!! Battle of Bloody Gulch? I will be in Normandy in a couple weeks and this video is very helpful
Thanks very much. It's early days so far, and I have lots more work ahead of me. I will do something on Bloody Gulch, but it won't be yet. Will be doing some 3/506th filming with Ian Gardner later this year
Fabulous work, Paul. This is wonderful.
This was absolutely fantastic. Thank you for your hard work. Just subscribed.
Fantastic video and extremely informative.
Every time I'm in London I stand in the Churchill War Rooms and listen to his speeches. It's extremely disappointing that the man who firmly said "If the British Empire and its Commonwealth lasts for a thousand years men will still say, 'This was their finest hour' ” is thought to be fictional! 😢
One of the very best accounts I've ever heard. Thank you.
Superb piece. Thank you.
Great relay of events, well done! 👍🏼 deserves more views.
Excellent video. I wish this was available to me before I toured Carentan in June!
Please do something on the Bloody Gulch battle.
Very good idea.
@@FilipDePreter Totally agree! Bloody Gulch would be a great video to see!
I preferred the format of this video so much more than the others where there is a featured speaker that is the focus of the camera rather than the fields and areas he is referring to.
Fantastic informative video. Great narration too. Great use of 'active' maps, background sounds and other media. Looking forward to more.
Great work. Keep 'em coming.
What a great video! Love the history of Easy Company. Keep up the good work.
Fantastic Job! I enjoyed the telling of this particular battle.

Absolutely first class detailed explanation very informative thank you.
@WW2TV Thankyou for your hardwork in making this video presentation.
Very informative and interesting.
I have been to Carentan and spent a couple of days there, so I was familiar with the places where the actions you were describing took place.
Do you have any plans to cover the battle of Hill 30 and La Billionarie?
Wow I’m impressed with the in-depth detail of the battle
Thanks
I'm so glad I found this video and your channel. This is one of the best then and now accounts. One day I hope to tour through France, Belgium and Austria and visit all the famous D Day sites. Thank you for this channel, great work.
If u can live long enough to surpass this pandemic century???
Amazing work that you have put into this video. Liked and subbed. Keep up the hard work! If only people like you taught history in school rather than coaches, more people would appreciate it.
Thank you very much. We have many more shows coming up
Great work seriously well done thanks so much for that in-depth doco was very enjoyable to watch , going to subscribe as looking forward to seeing alot more
Great video . Shows tactics they used and good detail about what happened and the locations.
19:01 Now thats a trooper with style.
Outstanding
Well done, keep 'em coming.
Excellent job Kevin. I hope to tour with you when things are open again. The Patton tour you were to lead a few years back was less than satisfactory - because you weren’t there. Hopefully, we can coordinate something in the future.
Great documentary Paul just like one of your battlefield tours.
