Honestly, Kennywood is my home park and i road them both hundreds of times. I would say I like them both equally when i was riding them but my tolerance for pain was much higher when i was a kid riding steel phantom. Nowadays, I would probably much prefer revenge. I think steel curtain is better than both. I rode front row of steel curtain 2 days after riding steel vengeance at cedar point. I found many similarities considering there is so much going on in both rides. Curtain is a front seat only coaster.
I only rode Steel curtain in the front multiple times. After an amazing front row ride and rumors that others seats arent even close to the same experience. But I'm like the people that ride banshee or diamondback so many times the buzz wears off. That's kind of how I feel about phantoms revenge. It definitely gives stronger ejector airtime while steel curtain has a few floater airtime but with amazing smooth elements. It's my opinion and I respect anyone else's.
As a Pittsburgher, its always cool to know we had, if only for a moment, the fastest and biggest dropping coaster in the world. The Steel Phantom did bang the hell out of you, but I was a teenager then so I loved it...I will say being considerably older now, I prefer the Phantom's Revenge....you still get the thrill of those first two hills and then get impressive air time throughout the second half.
The fact that Steel Phantom is shorter in length yet they finish at the same time shows how trimmed it was during the inversions to try and keep it bearable.
They neutered it by taking out the inversions…Just imo. It was a punishing ride, but that was part of the “charm” of the originals. At least both of them kept the 2nd hill being the largest drop, going down between the Thunderbolt and into the ravine/valley is still awesome! Just so ppl remember, the original was a 200ft drop and close to 90mph, it was certainly a hypercoaster back in the day!
It still is one they actually made it better with phantom as it’s much smoother and much smoother means less headbanging, and no inversions and small hills equals insanely good ejector.
@@Thelightning1out I know, just not the same imo since I grew up riding the original…Haha the roughness was part of its charm!! I agree the new one is smoother, but it doesn’t push the envelope for me and feels like a step back imo. The steel phantom had an amazing layout but it was just so rough. If the smooth arrow coaster era happened back then, then it would’ve survived a lot longer
Steel phantom was way to fast for the elements in a compact area. Taking out the inversions and keeping the speed with added airtime, made it a more enjoyable ride. SP was really rough! I really miss the original phantom. Mainly because as a kid it was the first "big" roller coaster I had ever ridden. Got about 3 years out of it and then they renovated the second half and made it boring as hell compared to the original. Sure it gave you some serious whiplash but it was totally worth it.
The Revenge and Steel Phantom both have that drop still, so I'm confused on why you say it was better before when it is nearly the exact same up until the helix.

And maybe put other hills or something in place of the other two inversions or some how spread the inversions out and not had them so close to eachother. Definitely could’ve had the loop at the bottom of the first hill before going up the second hill would’ve been cool.
It wasn't just the rough track. The speed it was carrying (almost 70mph) into the loop was hurting people's necks. To fix that they added trim brakes, which then just started adding more time with the train on the supports, damaging them to a point of Kennywood deciding to close the ride. After announcing it was closing they got A LOT of backlash, leading to them to look for a company to renovate the area completely.
