I don't think he cares, because he's in this position a lot. He's regularly in these super gm tournaments as the lowest rated player and almost always finishes in last. But, he gets some good exposure, gets to hang out with his buddy Magnus, and chess gets a pretty face to try and pull in some fans. I think it's a win for everybody.
At first I thought Magnus stopped himself just in time by not touching the rook, preventing himself of being forced to make a rook move. But if I'm not mistaken it wouldn't have mattered if he did touch the rook because there are no legal moves possible.
I believe that if you touch a piece that can't move, that's either a forced loss or a time penalty. Not sure though... Either way, lucky him that he didn't make that mistake!
@@teodorlontos3294 FIDE rule 4.5: If none of the pieces touched can be moved or captured, the player may make any legal move. So Carlsen would have been fine unless he'd gone as far as actually playing Rxg2

If Magnus takes the Queen then it's Re8# just like that, he wouldn't take the bait I'm sure, but it would have completely changed the game.

Had Magnus played Rxg2 and pressed or stopped the clock then he would have lost, since moving the rook is an illegal move. However in this case just touching it wouldn't have lost the game - the rules specifically state that if a piece touched has no legal move, the player is free to move a different piece.
Nothing except if Tari called the arbiter, he would get an extra 2 minutes on his clock, but it wouldnt save him. After ... Qxe5 it was forced mate in 5 moves, Carlsen still had almost 2 minutes on his clock, he would not miss the mate. Usually, in position like that, players even dont call arbiter to add more time, they just resign
He didn't touch anything and all was completely fine and legal. But he initially wanted to grap the rook at 4:20 to capture g2, which is a illegal move. But he noticed in time.
Actually even if he had touched the rock nothing had happened as long as he didn't move it and press the clock... If you touch a pinned piece you are still allowed to do any legal move.
A few weeks ago I went to the Norway to explore the world of chess. Out of the three times Magnus Carlsen and I played chess, I beat him one time, drew the next game, and lost the last one. Honestly, that's not bad for someone who started a month ago.

Hear me out. Is magnus losing all the classic games and winning all Armageddon games purposely so he has an achievement of being number 1 by winning all Armageddon games first 😂.
wholesome smiles at the end :)
dont do it Magnus, Norwegian jails are brutal I hear they dont give truffle with the langoustine ravioli and u only get 3 massages per day 😥
I remember this guy that was on live row he got only 2 massages and it was living hell! But human rights activists helped him get his truffle!
It would be a shame. They would have to take away 1 of his 57 pillows so he can't sleep comfortably.

Magnus got it right at the end
on some games magnus rushes to the armageddon. makes me think hes just in it for the fun of it.
Do hope he pulls some cllasics tho

Why is it illegal. Is there a rule that a rook can’t take a pawn that hasn’t moved?
it was pinned by the queen
