  • All Audis seem to get quicker and quicker, but does that mean that the difference between a "S" model and a regular one has shrunk? Whether you're a prospective buyer or just want to watch some Audis drive fast, I'll have you covered in this one. On top of getting accurate Dragy times for each of these Audis, I will also share the differences in mechanical equipment for each!

The A4 45 is definitely the sweet spot. The S4 is for those who really care about the nuances and details - Quattro "ultra" vs "Traditional' Quattro, the optional rear LSD, bigger displacement V6 vs I4 (torque, power and engine note), adaptive dampers, traditional automatic vs Dual clutch etc. Personally, I have the 45 and love it enough not to really move to the S4.

I had the same dilemma when I was shopping for my first Audi... drove the S4 and don't get me wrong, the seats are amazing and power is wonderful... but the weight of the V6 turbo and the transition of that weight when driving aggressively through a set of turns was really felt... I bought the A4 45 S-line with black optics pkg... I put a tune on it after the break in period, it consistently delivers 4.5sec 0-60 runs... I do miss those seats from the S4

2022 S5SB with Dynamic Steering and yes I can feel a difference in the settings, but I'd really prefer an even heavier feel. Maybe I need to drive an S4/5 without the steering upgrade to be able to really tell the difference? Our Macan has steering plus and I hate it! At no point in driving do I want caddy like steering.

I bought a 2018 S4 Prestige with the diff, suspension and steering options. It’s gone 62,000 miles without any mechanical problems and averaged 30 mpg over that distance with mostly highway driving. Consumption drops to the high teens when hooned. It’s plenty fast enough in a straight line for the street. Steering is numb but precise and feels a bit more lively with Michelin PS4s over the OEM Continentals it came with. The diff helps with rotation but it still does best when driven like an Audi - trail braking deep to weight the front, get the turning done quickly, then boot on the exit and let the AWD and diff keep it pointed in the right direction. There are very perceptible differences in handling, throttle response and shifting going from comfort to auto to dynamic. There’s modest body roll even in dynamic, but I prefer that in a street car. Who needs to drive a plank to work? All in all a very entertaining and competent 4-season daily driver. The interior puts nearly all the competition to shame and still looks brand new with no visible wear on the leather. When I retire I might try to buy an RS3, accepting a somewhat cheaper interior for a more compelling powertrain, but I’ll keep the S4 until it’s close to 100,000 miles.

I just bought the 23 A4 45 S line premium plus at dealer invoice. With a JB4 (incoming) on map 5 w/ E40 it should pull a stock S4 no problem. Save yourself 8-10k and the EA888 makes more low end torque for everyday driving and way better mpg’s.

A4 45 owner here with the Black Optics Plus package. Great video! On the tuning market, I've seen Dragy confirmed 4.29 seconds 0-60 with just a stage 1 tune. Which is basically S4 territory. Of course you can tune the S4 as well. But comparing everything stock, I found it hard to justify the S4's premium price over the A4. I am quite jealous of the sound though, and the prestige. It's nicer to show up somewhere in an S model Audi vs. an A. And you're right - an optioned A4 looks nearly identical to an S4. Finally, our cons are the same. There isn't much soul to the powertrain. Yeah its very quick and handles well, but you're just not going to make that 4 cylinder sound good.

    • @Realistick

Not trying to pay for a whole new engine outta pocket if shit goes wrong which is what you have to do when tuning and modifying down pipes and any type of part. S-Line sport suspension is very nice too, even on shitty roads that we have here its near perfect for me. My guess is that 2.0t is also more reliabile and easier to service. My buddy has 2006 A4 with around 250k miles on the clock.....
That said, I got A5 to save money and the exterior color was amazing. I havent gotten this many compliments since my E46 M3 that I had in early 2000s when it just came out. But again, if i didnt care much about money, I'd just get S or RS.
