  • In this video, an elderly man who migrated from Sri Lanka 45 years ago explains everything about #Gavi, shares insights on elephant behavior, and recounts his experiences.
Gavi is located 14 km southwest of Vandiperiyar and 28 km from Kumily, near Thekkady. It lies within the Ranni Reserve Forest and is part of the Seethathode Panchayat in Ranni Taluk. Gavi is within the Periyar Tiger Reserve, and the route from Vandiperiyar can be traveled by car. It is renowned as an ecotourism destination. The entrance fee is 25 rupees per person and 50 rupees per vehicle, with cameras charged 25 rupees and video cameras 100 rupees. Both day and night stays are available, and forest tent camping is offered from November through March. The most enjoyable route to Gavi is said to be from Pathanamthitta.
Botanists have identified "gopher trees" in Gavi, Kerala. There are two gopher trees in Gavi's forest area, believed to be the only ones in India. This tree, known locally as nirampalli, is referenced in the Bible as gopher wood or gopherwood, though its exact species remains unclear.
The gopher tree in the Gavi forest is notable for its robust stem and dense foliage. State Forest Department officials note that while the fully-grown gopher in Gavi is the only one observed in the jungle's periphery, more may exist deeper within the Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR) in Kerala.
Key attractions and activities in Gavi include:
Wildlife Watching: Gavi is home to a variety of wildlife, including elephants, tigers, leopards, and many species of birds. Safari trips are a popular way to explore the area.
Boating and Kayaking: The Gavi dam and the surrounding water bodies offer opportunities for boating and kayaking.
Trekking and Hiking: There are several trekking routes in and around Gavi, providing trekkers with stunning views of the Western Ghats and the surrounding forests.
Camping: Gavi offers camping facilities, allowing visitors to stay overnight and experience the wilderness up close.
Cardamom Plantations: The region is also known for its cardamom plantations, which visitors can tour to learn about the cultivation and processing of this spice.
Eco-Tourism: The focus on eco-tourism means that efforts are made to preserve the natural environment while providing visitors with unique experiences in nature.
Gavi's remote location and pristine environment make it an excellent destination for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy the tranquility of nature.
    Road Conditions and Tips
Forest Road: The road from Vandiperiyar to Gavi passes through the Periyar Tiger Reserve. This stretch is about 40 km long and is a forest road, which can be narrow and winding with occasional rough patches.
Permits: Entry into the Periyar Tiger Reserve requires a permit. These permits are usually checked at the forest check post.
Driving: Due to the forested area, it's recommended to drive during daylight hours. The road offers stunning views of the Western Ghats, forests, and wildlife.
Wildlife Sightings: Be prepared for possible wildlife sightings, including elephants, deer, and various birds.
Facilities: There are limited facilities along the route, so it's advisable to carry essential supplies like water, snacks, and a first aid kit.
Weather: The region can be cool, especially during the early morning and late evening, so carrying a light jacket or sweater might be helpful.
    Best Time to Visit
Winter (November to February): The weather is pleasant and ideal for exploring the area.
Monsoon (June to September): The region receives heavy rainfall, making the roads slippery and travel challenging. However, the landscape is lush and green during this time.
Summer (March to May): The temperature is moderate, and it's a good time for trekking and other outdoor activities.
The journey to Gavi is as much about the experience of the road trip as it is about the destination itself. The scenic drive through forests and hills is a major part of the adventure.
