- Planning a live dawless improv setup and it was going so good until I remembered this annoying thing the Avalon Bassline does.. or maybe its Circuit Tracks, who's at fault? Who knows maybe it me haha! Either way, i'll take you through the compact dawless setup and show you how I plan to play live with it! Hopefully it all goes well

Didn't realize how much I missed the "coffee and filter sweep" intro until I checked out your old video. You've been rockin it a lot of years!
haha! oh man even I almost forgot about that!
@@RickyTinezsuch a classic intro
Bring it back! ❤
😂
Bring it back.
Ricky is the only CZcamsr whose videos I’ll watch even if I have no interest in the gear itself because it’s just good time.
Truth. Wonderful vibe
The problem is that he makes it so interesting I get to wanting whatever he's using.
That’s because he is sharing the love AND the knowledge.
I appreciate that the general vibe of your channel is problem solving/process oriented, thanks.
Love that you brought back the circuit tracks for this session. That whole machine is the reason I found your channel. So really enjoyed your live jam session here.
For the accent stuff you could use a retrokits RK002 programmable midi cable with the curve mapper installed. Smallest solution I think.
I have a solution for you: Using a Blokas Midihub you can manipulate transmited midi and do stuff like:
- Scale down velocity of notes from 0-127 to 0-64 by default to avoid going accent on the avalon
- Then you can use one of the Circuit Track's knob (midi track 1) to scale velocity up, when you want to trigger the accent -> Once it's setup in Midihub it's fully standalone and can use midi mapping to change value of things and/or enable/disable specific manipulations
- That being tied to one of Circuit Tracks knob means you can automate it while recording live as well as automate it on a step basis
Midihub is so handy. I use it a lot to solve the quirkyness of machines in my setup
that jam was so good wow, its so wild how naturally you can just come up with whole new ideas and even play off mistakes
LOVE IT RICKY! I have an Avalon and use it for live improv all the time and have two possible solutions for you: as you pointed out, lowering the ACCENT will "scale" the velocity of the note down and this almost solves it, but then you have to bring up other knobs (ACC DECAY and ENV DECAY) to compensate.... or of course solution 2 is to use it in PATTERN WRITE mode and use the Avalon sequencer... then you'll have full control of anything you need. This is where my Avalon stays for live use.
Just saw this in the release notes for Firmware 1.07a: MIDI Accent Input threshold change to Velocity 100+ instead of 65+
@@ManmademadmanPost this on its own instead of as a reply to be sure Ricky sees it.
you could stick a midihub in between the circuit & avalon and rescale the velocity values from 0-127 to say 0-70, problem solved. of couse it's a solution requiring about 150 bucks but hey that's dawless for ya!
I wondered if this would be a solution. interesting to know that Its a possibility! ill check them out, thanks!
@@PorchBassalso for ios, app is called midiflow
@@RickyTinezI was about to comment that a MIDI processor like the Midihub would probably solve this for you. Definitely a recommended piece of gear, for me I initially got it for some basic filtering and routing but it's quickly become the 'sleeper hit' of my setup. Aside from making fixing basic problems trivial it gives you the ability to expand the capabilities of your gear, e.g. modulating an LFO depth on the Octatrack with velocity or aftertouch...
@@RickyTinezif you're in the market for a midi-thing I highly recommend looking at the Retrokits Rk-006. It is not the cheapest, but it is incredible. Extremely versatile (hub, host, merger, filter, midi, din, cv, clocks, usb (also add midi hubs as host). Connect everything really simple
Yes, or one of those programmable midi cables
Thank you for posting. Magical. I missed those set up.
Great seeing the way you use your circuit.
Definitely an amazing jam! Thanks for demonstrating how obstacles are part of the process of making a dope track.
This jam spot on 👌.
Ricky + Hardware - production Technicalities = DOPE MUSIC
Always love catching these grooves, the filtered coffee bit remains a classic, and I’m still going back for your life-saving lock-down vidz over early morning espressos…
Octatrack and Circuit Tracks alone are already such a powerful live rig. Done a few shows with that alone!
I would love to see you take on the OXI One sequencer. Great track and tutorial. Thank you for quality content I can learn and use.
I would love that too.
Oh selecting the start point of the vocal by looking at the waveform, then just reacting to what happened was neat. I think sometimes because you’re so comfortable with your ear it all looks super organised and planned. Always be playing!
Brilliant Ricky..your tracks bring back memories of going to house clubs in the early 90s❤
Awesome video. Definitely had my head bobbing a few times. Brought back my deep house days from 20 years ago.
For the avalon velocity issue, you could use a small midi filter box and filter out velocity. Cme or similar.
thats what i was thinking
Blokas Midihub.
Maybe even invert the velocity so you can still do an accent by setting the velocity below 64
Hardware wise you could use an arduino with a midi hat
Or if you still have the Zoia, that might work as well
Yeah, the CME U6MIDI Pro can do it. It can do better than filter out velocities, it can map them.
You make it look so easy !! Great inspiration everytime ! A pleasure trying to be your CZcams padawan !! Keep the vibe… 🙏🏽
Solution idea: set the knob from Avalon which Controls accent effect on One knob on the circuit midi track as circuit Tracks also can be edited to have some Midi Control Parameters in the Midi Tracks. than for example set it low on Avalon and step lock the value on circuit
in case it helps, in Avalong OS 1.07a velocity for activating accent was changed to 100+ .. i think default velocity on Circuit is 100 so now default notes in circuit shouldn’t trigger acent ? (not sure if it is 100+ including 100 or above 100 though)
oh man! I think it might be the EXACT number to trigger the velocity hahah!
I think this is the solution: Not sure what the default velocity is, but fixed velocity on Circuit Tracks is 96 (12 pads lit)
BOME midi translator would solve this as well as being a bit of a midi Swiss Army knife. I’ve used it for example to pitch notes on the tr8s and Perkons, and feedback to switch LEDs on/off on midi controllers for toggles when connecting directly to gear rather than a daw. It’s relatively expensive but very powerful as it has a scripting language so there are lots of possibilities.
Ricky you're too nice with it! Loved this sesh!
This jam rocks ❤ holy moly!
NIce work Enrico! Smooth.. When looking at the waveform for the sample I guess you could listen to the cue output on phones to avoid any nasty surprises!
Dope as always!
so, get ANY OTHER analog bass synth. solved
erica bassline, behringers tb whatevers, analog four, roland s-1, norand mono. better yet, use the CIRCUIT MONO STATION. you worked for novation, you know they have that same sequencer of the circuit tracks PLUS an improved version of the bassline 2 with everything you could possibly want plus elektron style sound locks and p-locks, 3 distortion types, svf, osc sync, duophony and the dope filter which i believe they used on the Peak/Summit
Always with the dope house beats!
nice setup! Avalon seems nice.
Just what I needed to get the live set prep juices flowin
Eyyyyy Circuit is back! I'd love to see how you set up your samples on there. Also did you say you had some live looping stuff set up on this? Do you have that set up on T5, and T6 on Octatrack?
You are going to make me spend all my money lol! Loved this video!
Hmm, having an accent over a certain velocity is normal (even though other synth use "over 100" not "over 63"). Other sequencers - like the Squarp Hapax - have a setting for a "default velocity" that can be as low as you want. So the problem is not the MIDI routing (even though I find it problematic that the Avalon receives clock from nowhere), but the limited functionality of the Circuit Tracks.
Great video man! Love your work. What alternatives to the avalon could you recomend to mix with a drumbrute?
6:47 Glasses looked good man,👓 BRING BACK TINEZ SPECS' 😎😄✌🎛
Interesting that you still use the Circuit Tracks, I would’ve thought the Rhythm was more up your street!
the polyphonic midi sequencers are ace on the circuit tracks!
@@RickyTinez Oh! I didn’t realise the midi channels are poly!
I put my TR8s, MC707 and TD3 into my Octatrack, works slick! MC707 sequences my TD3 allows you to set the value for accent, but i still want an Avalon!
Duuude we're on a such a similar wavelength. I'm waiting on my Avalon to come in around April. I planned on getting an Octatrack to use strictly as a performance mixer and fx processor for doing those sexy transitions. Looking into a Hapax as a master sequencer, and will likely use my 106 for pads and stuff. However, the ISE-NIN is super enticing to me right now. Thanks for this. :)
Octatrack has 8 midi tracks. Plus you get midi parameter locks.
After that jam I think it's hard to call this a 'flaw' - maybe more of a 'creative accident' - Just makes it special when you lower the velocity on some bassline notes!
Damn dude you're super talented
Could watch this for hours ❤️
Nice 1 fella. Creamy sound. Have you played out with that set up? Do you take the stereo-out from the Elektron direct to the club's PA or do you put some external compressor/limiter in there first? Or EQ? I can imagine a high-pass filter set really low - like 60 Hz - would be super useful in that situation. Or does the Elektron do all of that?
You could disable MIDI Accent on the Avalon (config 10.1.10 in manual).
Fantastic.
There’s a recent-ish Avalon OS update that addresses a lot of the problems you mentioned with its MIDI In control.
heck of a jam my friend
Avalon and messed up accents, name a more iconic duo.
Reminds me of you old video with the old circuit, mpc and a base synth
MPC's have the 'HALF LEVEL' option for pads for the same reason. Behringer RD8 and RD9 do this too.
If you have pad sensitivity on the tracks - can you turn it to the most insensitive to help?
if there is an option to change the velocity curve and lower the sensitivity on the Novation pads? But then you would have to hit more hard when sequencing other tracks, but maybe you could use then fixed velocity button to drums, and compromise with it to all other tracks...not sure if there is even that option on the device, but if not, it should.
I have to do most of the stuff in the prehear before I bring it in if it’s a genuine improvisation because there’s no way I’ll hit the correct key on the stuff I’m making the first time. Does the Tracks mixer level affect the velocity? If it does, could just record it live instead of tapping in the velocity. Still an extra step but more fluid, maybe.
Trade the Avalon for a Mam MB 33. Velocity above 100 become are accented, adjacent notes above 1/16th will slide. It just works.
Just scored one on reverb for $150, stoked to try it out.
I can exchange your Avalon with my MAM MB33. For free!
@@MyReasonToPlay hahaha!
Is there a way to set 64 as the default velocity for new notes on the Circuit 🤷🏽♂️ ???
Pretty sure you would be able to solve anything related to midi with a blockas midihub.
Also, don't you change up the hihat with other samples? Which ones? I think it can get a bit monotonous to have a 909 open hat playing through a whole set.
Maybe filtering or „tune“ the velocity with Midihub by Blokas.
Hi Ricky... Noticed my previous comment was missing for some reason... So have reposted the jist of it again... ~ ( Would using a sidechain compressor on the Avalon FX chain that was also gated help?... ~ It might sound a bit bit novice ot dumb of me, but have been having fun with experimenting with that type of thing... )~ Again great vid as always!!!...
Glasses or none, always groovin' and that's what matters! 😀
dear ricky you make me love house music!
Instead of adding notes duplicate or existing notes that are low velocity. Unfortunately that's two button presses, holding duplicate and selecting the note, but then you can just one press to add them
retrokits makes a programmable midi cable with wich you could make the default notes of the circuit not trigger the accent, but all notes where you manually reduce veloicty do accent. i.e. just map 128 to 60, and everything else to 128. it would be a little weird, but basically fully functional. I would set one up for you, but I am in europe, so maybe not the most efficient way :-D
i could give you the code though, i have one myself
holy crap, that actually makes total sense.. a HILARIOUS workaround that 128=60 but everything else is fine haha. but it would be perfect I'd have to REALLY hit the pad to get an accent.. hmmm Looking into this cable now! especially if it doesn't require any extra power
@@RickyTinezit works off of the power on the midi cable. so there is a risk it wont work, as it is a bit of a hack. that said, the midi solutions splitter/mergers also work that way and are kind of a staple, so I assume most midi ports supply enough power. try it! happy to help :). and if you need code shout
@@danieloberhoff1 I believe it will work, I have coded one DUY rk-002 "momentizer" footswitch code for fcb1010 and have no doubt it will do its duty.
That Avalon tho 🤤
"don't buy it it's too expensive". so true!
Use a switchable midi filter hub between the avalon the circuit.
was just about to suggest that
will the midi filter hub filter velocity sensitivity? I've never head of these! checking it out now haha thank you
Hell yeah.
Would using the Erica DB-01 instead of the Avalon avoid the problem(s)?
THIS is why I Sub'd THIS Channel!!!!!
Run midi thru Octa then to Avalon?
Coffee, Weed and Elektron, and don't forget orange juice
id say ditch the avalon and use another mono synth. the avalon in this scenario doesn't sound much like a 303 because you're not using its own sequencer. if you use a different bass synth, you could fill the space that a 303 would take up, save the sequencing headaches, and make it sound better since the 303's oscillator core isnt that good sounding without the 303 sequencer. plus you could always use a 303 loop in the ot
I thought about that too, I love the way the knobs on the Avalon interact with one another. and I can get it to slide and tie too with the proper gate lengths which I didn't show on circuit. maybe that MB33 everyone is talking about above.
@@RickyTinez if you can get it to slide it might be worth it then. i just sold my 303 last week cuz i like emulating it on my syntakt better haha
Excuse me if im wrong, but doesnt the "fixed velocity" on the tracks sets all new triggers to 50%, and since it has to be lower than 64 that would work, right?
It's fixed on 96
can i get a replacement resonance pot for my avalon?
Hey! Why the avalon is a best bass device for you atm?
❤❤❤
Do you still have your Live 2 Ricky?
what would be a good less expensive solution to replace the too expensive avalon? thanks

Hey! Is it true that the Digitakt is out of production?!?! TELL US WE KNOW YOU WORK AT ELEKTRON!!! 😂😂😂😂
I think you’re 99% there, but add a midi cable from the Avalon to the Novation so that you can play notes on the Avalon instead of the Novation so all the notes have the correct value and you won’t have an extra step when you improv, live.
I'm hearing Larry Heard vibes! ❤

Why isn't Abstract Instr producing more Avalon Bassline?? Why is this thing unavailable everywhere?? Ppl would by that gear like mad...
Midihub from Blokas seems like a potential solution for your velocity issue... but it adds another box to your setup: czcams.com/video/E0VL43l_zao/video.htmlsi=1lcp5GGRsI_--rmk 7:58
If this would be my setup, I would have a simple solution: put an Arduino Nano microcontroller (or something similar) inbetween with MIDI in and out, and rescale the incoming velocity to a range that is more suitable.Bob's your uncle. That requires ~$6 in parts, a bit of soldering, and some very simple coding. But.. unfortunately, if you have never worked with microcontrollers or did any soldering than it is no longer 'simple'. I'd be happy to make such a thing for you, but I am across the ocean so that's not very practical. Perhaps you have a mate who is more experienced with DIY who is living closer to you.
Ka..me..ha..me..ha......

60 cycle hum Picked up somewhere from your microphone or an audio cable it hurts ears to listen to this video.
It’s nuts he didn’t hear it
Monsieur Tinez! Why are u so infatuated with the Avalon? This HUGE box that is a tb303 thing.. surely many are many out there that sound as good and do much more. Explain yourself! ;)
its not a flaw of the avalon. its more a problem with your sequencer
This genre of music doesn’t ever sound fresh and new… ugh
can you reverse the velocity curve ? or slope . for the pads . or swap out for controller that can .. 🎚️🤓
I have the TD3MO and the midi velocity thing has the same set up, I think it's 100 though. I'm sequencing it with the Syntakt which obviously lets you set the velocity at the track level. So I guess the fix is use the Syntakt or Digitakt instead of the Tracks 🫤
This might help...Avalon OS v1.07a: MIDI Accent Input threshold change to Velocity 100+ instead of 65+
