Ran them out of the box, I went to degree them with adjustable cam gears, found the engine had killed two cam lobes and decided to pull the engine down

Id suggest the dual guide shim mod for tue valve rockers instead of those rocker arm stoppers.

Had a gtir, I bought a set of rocker stoppers due to bad advice. Not required.
Yeah lots of information these days indicate they're not required. Honestly buy some really good valve springs and you'll be fine
With the 272 cams, did you have them degreed or you just ran them out the box?

It would have made a huge difference to degree them I know, just didn't have any adjustable gears at the time
