- Here are my top 5 Sampler and Looper apps for iPhone and iPad! They can all sample and loop stuff and some even have a sequencer. All of these apps are also unique in some way, shape or form and differ quite a lot form one another. And thats important, as I did not just want to list 5 similar apps. Now some of these apps are veterans, in app years, as the oldest one was released back in 2011, while the newest one was released this year (2019). So join me as I'll be diving into what it actually is that makes these samplers and loopers so special. Check it out!

Samplr is still great on my IPAD 4th Gen! Love the new format, very Profesh. A Samplr tutorial when the teaser is revealed would be the bee's knees🐝

Blocs Wave has been my rocket launcher app. When I need to get creativity going, nothing beats it. They also have a very long loop library that I have been chopping and recycling mercilessly (LOL).

Blocks wave and launchpad combined are an inspirational powerhouse to get ideas.My recommendation for what it’s worth.
I highly enjoy Enso, in particular for insane vocal loops live from our singer!
I'd love to see that bloc waves timestretching and easy auditioning mixed with samplr's genius-level playability and flexibility. Great video as always, Jakob.

thanks for the great video Jakob! I just started music production on my iPad, got myself cubasis because of your last video and may now get koala sampler. Just need to find a way to jam with friends now without having to buy more ipads and laptops. I'd love to have a launchpad to give to a friend to play drums, another one to play o the keyboard for bass line and myself to Play lead on the synth. Oh and of course to be able to record everything we play but also to create loops

Koala is a great app. It looks like it might be just a toy, then you get it and play around and it’s much more than that. It sounds awesome with recording your own sounds and playing them back in the car.
That's funny - I do the same thing. A spare 5 or 10 minutes to work on something in Koala almost always leads to something cool. The new Pinch-to-Zoom feature in the latest update is definitely a helpful addition.
It sounds so cool. It’s strange. Everything I do on koala seems to sound primitive or something. It’s the greatest. I’ll have to keep that pinch to zoom in mind next time I’m on it.

Also bruh blocs wave has me hooked since scooping it in 2016 I have all but like 5 sound packs and I really like just exploring what I can come up with. It’s like playing with a kids puzzle with large pieces.
Have you came across FingertipMaestro yet? It only comes with piano for free at first but it legit makes me sound like I’ve been playing for years the way it’s all set up.
Oh and by the way koala owes you $ for being a middle man I copped it immediately after watching this
Samplr is great until you try recording into it. Then you find out real quick that you can’t trim samples (nor will it do that for you like Koala, which I am heading to the App Store to purchase in a minute.) Otherwise, superb UI using the strengths of iOS’s interface.
Great video Mr. Jakob!!! I have been looking for a controller for looping and that Korg NanoKonrol studio looks like it might be the best. I have also been looking at the Launch Control XL.
Great list. Koala is my favorite of these. Blocs Wave would be my 2nd favorite. Lol.

Great video Jakob you certainly upped your game with this one very professional. Thanks for your great and interesting content. I think KOALA is the number 1 sampler, looper at present it a great powerhouse for looping and sampling. Hoping it gets landscape mode soon and keeps getting features. Its a shame Apple didnt buy out SAMPLR from the dev when he moved to them and kept it going. Ref using Korg Nanokey Studio I heard Bluetooth is broken under iOS 13 so wont be updating that until Korg/ Apple fix it.

I wouldn’t recommend updating to iOS 13 at launch and I’d wait at least a few months after launch before even considering it. They always break loads of stuff whenever a big update hits. 😓
Its not a shame at all. The app still works great. Apple would have just integrated it into Garageband like they did to alchemy.

I have pretty much every looping and sampling app made. I’ve been’s beta testing Loopy for eight years now (The only thing I wish you could do was chop your samples in it but you easily run them in and out of AudioShare. I honestly don’t have Loopfield of which I will download right now as I can’t believe I’ve never heard of it. I’m glad I watch your videos so I could catch up on that one. Always great reviews and always happy to see a fellow iOS app addict!!!
Have you tried Quantiloop and Group the loop?
Paul MARTIN I am beta testing group the loop which is great but I don’t have quantum loop. That’s the only looper I don’t have at all for iOS. I’m pretty sure I will grab it soon
shadowandlight100 does group the loop offer tempo midi sync to synchronise drums from another app ? Can it interact with other apps ?
Excellent video Jakob! Koala is my absolute favourite and the latest update is incredible with the zooming of samples that can be cropped.
You just have put me on Loopfield,I had no idea that app existed. I could use Samplr with my IPad 3,wish the app was discounted though😏.As an honourable mention, I would have to say Reslice which is fun to use.
A lot of users seem to recommend Quantiloop, Group the loop and also Enso. I’ll add them to the pinned comment. 👍🏼

Agree with Koala, this is the iphone solution for PO-33... so great, and developer seems to listen to the community.
that's the problem with relying on software for creativity and more. software gets updated. projects and apps get bricked. happened so many times with apple products that I almost plan on it now, by not exclusively relying on them anymore - always have a backup way of doing things just in case. learned the hard way. keep old phones and old computers around for that very reason. now when teslas all get bricked....

So you can start to record your first loop without metronome.. All your Apps will be sync after your first recording...

I haven’t used it. I have a huge backlog of apps I haven’t had time to check out over the years. Its a case of unlimited apps vs limited time.

I second this. Love Quantiloop- it’s like having a Boss RC-5xx in your ipad/iphone (works on both) and with a couple AirTurn BT 6-switch footpedals, there’s nothing you can’t do that the Boss hardware did, but for a fraction of the cost.
I keep an iPad that doesn’t get upgraded past a certain point and a couple that stay updated. That way I can hang on to some of the good apps like Samplr that has been abandoned. Thx ✌🏾

Thanks for the video! I really like Blocs, it always gets me out of my norm. I wish the slicer had more control but it’s still solid if I don’t use long loops. Loopfield looks really interesting, I may pick that up today

Yeah, you did miss one. There should have been 6. To me ENSO should have been on this list. It is a looper/sampler but more of a phrase looper that is AUV3. That, what I just said is reason enough to have ENSO as part of your top list. Being that his is an AYV3 looper you can have multiple instances in the “EFFECTS” slot in AUM; either one looper for each channel or how about multiple ENSOs in the same channel!

Jakob Haq have you done a review/tutorial on ENSO yet? It was like the most talked about app because it is the same exact software as the desktop plug-in with only one difference: the $170 plug-in give you 10mins of looping while the $5-$10 app gives you 5mins of looping.
Wow those Pocket Operator cases are crazy! I already have a 3D printed one from Shapeways but I would be awfully tempted to buy those from Beatmaker.. Hate that I missed the recent drop too that ended a week ago.
Excellent list. Love the inclusion of Samplr. AUM can also be used as a pretty decent looper as well.
AUM has some really nice features. A lot of users miss the sample player in there.
Jakob Haq I only wish it had a reverse function when playing a sample. So, I used TwisedWave for that.
I'm more of a fan of using midi controllers, myself. Sometimes on ios apps, I get the impression that that the touch controls were made for smaller hands than mine. :-/
Yeah it can be fiddly depending on the app and also iPad/iPhone size. I’m using an iPad Pro and two minis over here. Some apps have controls that become too tiny on the smaller iPads and I’ll have to rely on the bigger iPad instead. It’s nice being able to hook up controllers when that happens.

Thanks for this video :-). I can’t help to notice that none of these apps supports AUv3. It’s a bit of a shame. I have decided not to buy apps without AUv3 but that koala sampler makes me consider to make an exception. I sure hope that it will get that magic upgrade one day ;-)

Yasin Hasan how are you connecting it? There are a bunch of reasons to why a connection might fail or why an external device might not work with iOS. I agree about sampler as well. Although I didn’t care for the interface. I had hope .....but it wasn’t intuitive enough for the in users. And I think that really kills something that could’ve done all it offered but in a less cryptic way. Just my opinion. And I used it for about six months until I discovered Yellofier and the launch pad and blocks wave ..Groovebox apps which are the real sampler game changers for me on iOS . Peace Christo 👽🐕🎶🛸☮️

Just saw the @samplr response to Jakob on Twitter. Now that's what i call teasing... Samplr is my favorite iOS app, along with Borderlands. They're the ones that really take the most advantage of the tactile interface. Seems like the two might get an update soon, so I'm a pretty happy guy today! 🙂
I’d also ad TC-11 to that list of apps that shows what can be done with a Touch interface. Those three apps lilla it out of the park! 🤩

Really I'm just a guitarist who has a ton of pedals and I bought an iRig to record into Loopy, after buying Loopy as a result of your video, I wanted to ask, I record on loopy I might do parts of a song, is there another app which can adjoin the loops. I get the impression that loopy can only superimpose two loops, or has a record mode for performance loop and mute I guess, but that's still too difficult for me to work out, and not quite what I am after. I need some way of tailoring the loops/samples together in sequence.

It isn't going to die. There was a surprise update announced recently that should be coming in early 2020... the beta testers are working through it now. Details on the Audiobus forum.

I am brand spanking new to sampling I did purchase koala. I have many questions so I will start with a few, how do you get your samples into the app? Do you record using the iPhone or iPad microphone? Do you purchase samples or run a direct line into the device? How do you make sure that your samples are in Tune? (A440)

All these apps app respond to the phone/iPad built-in Mic input. I don’t think there are any audio apps on the AppStore that doesn’t respond to built in mic input. 👍 I hope this helps. Otherwise ask again but elaborate a bit more. It’s easier to respond if I have a bit more info to go on.
