We recently bought a similar harness to do our dog’s nails. Tranquilizers didn’t work. Our groomer who specialized in schnauzers for 50 years couldn’t do it. Our vet couldn’t even trim his nails. They said he would have to be completely sedated. The first time we put him in the harness was the first time in over year since we were able to get his nails clipped. After thrashing for a minute he finally gave up and hung there. Got his nails done quickly and removed the harness. Nothing terrifying. He didn’t shake in fear. We’ve now used it three times and we’re getting close to having his nails at a good length. The harness has made nail clipping so much better.
If a dog doesnt want you to do something, the only safe option is to get the owner to hold the dog, which kind of makes you look unproffessional, or hang them like this, so the dog doesnt freak out and jump off the table, or bite you, or risk injury to the dog by overcutting or limb trauma as the dog thrashes around, unfortunatly, sometimes we need to do these things to get the job done, in comparison its equivelent to taking your kid to the dentist to remove a rotten tooth, but your kid swings punches at the dentist as he tries to pull it.
Grooming hammocks are a God send. My dog hates her nails being clipped due to a bad experience (somebody took off a tad too much). So it literally takes a team to groom this chihuahua mix. The hammock acts as a restraint. She still has a look of betrayal and won't talk to me for a few hours afterwards.

We used to have all sorts of chairs with attached tables, soft restraints. All to protect people from harming themselves. All now banned so more falls more operations followed by death a few weeks later. Dont know what the right answer is but both have pros and cons.
You can tell she's not sure what to do with the sensation of being floating like that and it distracts her from how much she dislikes the grooming. Nifty trick!

This seems like the safest way to groom a smaller dog that doesn't want to be groomed. These guys can hurt themselves when they're freaking out and that makes grooming traumatic and difficult for everyone. This makes so much sense. My guess is this does NOT work the same on cats!

When I picked my Shizu up at the adoption center, they gave him the name saucy. I soon discovered he was very unruly when it came to grooming time. He bit me a couple of times, and but the groomer a couple of times even after given some sedation medicine. I guess it is too late to train him since he has already reached maturity at adoption. I am grateful that the groomer is still willing to handle him after those incidents, and I don’t object securing him in the harness and muzzles, it actually gets grooming done in a minimum time possible, and therefore with least traumatization for both the dog, the groomer and the owner.
I never use the harness, I always bring them onto my lap and hold them like a baby. I learned this technique from my mom who is also a groomer. It works so well

@MsMtheory I use a muzzle when needed. Im a 20 year grooming veteran and my mom has been grooming for 50 years. Neither of us have ever been bitten beyond a snap in this situation.

@@trevorw.6438 Had to look up what the hell pall malls were since I don’t engage in smoking trash. The fact that you’re familiar with that smell though already tells me what your animals prob smell like. My two CATS smell similar to newborn babies and they don’t need a bath to not stink.
A great solution. And it fits with what our vet says - examining a dog on the table instead of letting them stay on the floor is better because it takes the dog out of their comfort zone. They are just uncomfortable enough that they calm down and don't struggle

My sister late dog Charlie may he rest in dog heaven. He loved going to the groomer and his groomer loved him. When he came back he would literally go around to everyone and just stand there to get complement. His groomer always put a scarf on him and he loved it. He wouldn't let anyone take it off him for over a week. He was a Labrador/shih tzu mix. Don't ask me how that happened lol.
We have the male version of Kira, his name is Pepe. The nurse at the vets calls him the terrorist. We got him as a rescue dog, he didn’t have a very good start in life, so he’s been a work in progress for 13yrs. Now he’s just a grumpy old man. I could do with one of those harnesses. No groomer will do him. Over the years I have learned to do him in stages of what he is comfortable with. He’s not going to win any grooming awards, but at least I have earned his trust.

Same advice given for cats. All of my cats have been adult rescues and very very tolerant of toebean touching, so IDK. Cats are weird but the snuggles are soo damn worth it.
Trimming nails is one of the very first things I do with new puppies. At least twice a week. And sometimes even more (pretending to trim them) if the puppy has any issues with it. That is absolutely not an issue I want with an adult dog. It's a nightmare.
I would never bring my dog back to this groomer, for taking such delight in her distress. That is sick. This dog is afraid. Wonder what this girl does when we aren’t watching.
no you need to teach the dog not to bite you.. a muzzle is not the first thing you should think of in those cases.. sounds like your dog have no respect for you and feel it is in charge... positive reinforcement training can go along way, and if that does not help, then look at what the alpha dog or a parent dog would do.. a muzzle will probetly make the problem worse, it is deffently not the way you get rid of unwanted aggression..
It doesn’t necessarily mean the dog isn’t trained enough. My dog tends to get scared/nervous at the vet and tried to bite her several times; not because she isn’t trained (she’s a very well trained chihuahua) but because every dog reacts differently, especially if they’re scared.
I use a hanging sling for my biewer yorkie and it is LIFE CHANGING for us both!! I no long longer feel like I am torturing him to groom his legs behind, and and trim his nails. He no longer hates me when he finishes the process. It is a remarkable difference. Highly recommend!

My sister late dog Charlie may he rest in dog heaven. He loved going to the groomer and his groomer loved him. When he came back he would literally go around to everyone and just stand there to get complement. His groomer always put a scarf on him and he loved it. He wouldn't let anyone take it off him for over a week. He was a Labrador/shih tzu mix. Don't ask me how that happened lol.

We have the male version of Kira, his name is Pepe. The nurse at the vets calls him the terrorist. We got him as a rescue dog, he didn’t have a very good start in life, so he’s been a work in progress for 13yrs. Now he’s just a grumpy old man. I could do with one of those harnesses. No groomer will do him.
Over the years I have learned to do him in stages of what he is comfortable with.
He’s not going to win any grooming awards, but at least I have earned his trust.

Same advice given for cats. All of my cats have been adult rescues and very very tolerant of toebean touching, so IDK. Cats are weird but the snuggles are soo damn worth it.
Trimming nails is one of the very first things I do with new puppies. At least twice a week. And sometimes even more (pretending to trim them) if the puppy has any issues with it. That is absolutely not an issue I want with an adult dog. It's a nightmare.

a muzzle is not the first thing you should think of in those cases..
sounds like your dog have no respect for you and feel it is in charge...
positive reinforcement training can go along way, and if that does not help, then look at what the alpha dog or a parent dog would do..
a muzzle will probetly make the problem worse, it is deffently not the way you get rid of unwanted aggression..
It doesn’t necessarily mean the dog isn’t trained enough. My dog tends to get scared/nervous at the vet and tried to bite her several times; not because she isn’t trained (she’s a very well trained chihuahua) but because every dog reacts differently, especially if they’re scared.

I use a hanging sling for my biewer yorkie and it is LIFE CHANGING for us both!! I no long longer feel like I am torturing him to groom his legs behind, and and trim his nails. He no longer hates me when he finishes the process. It is a remarkable difference. Highly recommend!
