    The Thirty Years' War is one of the most destructive conflicts in human history. Initially a war between various Protestant and Catholic states in the fragmented Holy Roman Empire, it gradually developed into a more general conflict involving most of the European great powers. This conflict became famous for sacks of sities and killing the people. For thirty years, the war claimed the lives of 3-9 million people.
    This video will show the whole course of The Thirty Years' War on the map(every week).
    Have a pleasant viewing!!

    Do you see that island of Catholics in Bohemia at 6:11? That's my hometown of Brno. There is a legend that after a long siege, the Swedish forces made a plan. If they don't surrender until noon, we'll fall back and find a better target. Some Bohemian spy heard it and because the city's supplies and ammo were nearly depleted, they rung the bells an hour before noon. The Swedes heard the bells and marched away. From that day, all the bells in Brno always ring at 11 am.

    An important side-effect of this war was that it forced peasants in middle Europe to switch from growing grain to cultivating potatoes, just to survive.
    Armies could rush through, burning wheat, oat and rye fields, but they couldn't destroy potato fields easily. Plus, cavalry units, in particular, would avoid potato fields because their green tops are poisonous, being members of the deadly nightshade family of plants. It's even funnier when you know that at the start of the war, France was (diplomatically) supporting the Hasburgs in their battle against a common enemy. And then Austria decided to benefit from this war to annex parts of Bohemia. The French, already annoyed by the very, very large power of the Hasburgs (who were in control of Austria and the Spanish Empire), decided to help the protestants, paying the Danes to fight, and then the Swedes (that's why you can see both joining the war against the Catholic league and invading Germany). Then, once freed of its internal trouble, France joined the battlefield and teamed up with Sweden to bring an end to this war.
      By a single political move, Austria doomed itself and forever weakened both its royal dynasty and its religion!

      @user-yh5ls8hk5y Před 4 lety +18

      @@phillip_iv_planetking6354 Speak with facts, not nationalism, please.
      Lets focus on Nordlingen.
      The terico is not what won Nordlingen. The Spanish had almost 10 thousand more troops that the Swedish did at the battle, as well as had a better defensive position and favorable terrain. The Spanish had literally every single advantage compared to the Swedes, and pressed those.
      Furthermore, the event that is considered to have lost the battle was a Swedish blunder, not a Spanish triumph. A cavalry brigade charged prematurely, leaving its gunners expose, and proceed to ignore orders and begin to hunt down the retreating forces. This led Horns unguarded gunners to be confused, and they began firing on the other horse, infantry, and gun regiments that had already moved forward or were closed to the Spanish lines. A majority of the Swedish casualties came from friendly fire and the Spanish attacking forces that were unable to distinguish friend and foe and were attacking said friend and foe, as well as a disorganized army that were all doing their own thing. Was the Spanish leadership wise to see these flaws and press their advantages? Yes. Was the Terico any of these advantages? No. Hell, most of the Spanish casualties were *because* the terico. The terico allowed the Swedish that weren't in complete chaos to fire and do way more casualties to the terico than the terico was able to do back. The terico was even considered by the Spanish leaders to be the weakest part of their forces, given how poorly they perform against the Swedish gun formations.
      Now onto everything else you said.
      Was the Swedish army destroyed? No. Was the Swedish army able to rebuild in months and rejoin the war? Yes. Destroying the Swedish army was useful, but they were fightinf an army of mercenaries and more modern soldiers. Sweden had been training more soldiers in the case that this happens, and could hire mercenaries incredibly easily. The losses Sweden suffered were replaceble, and it did nothing to actually impact the war. This is unlike Breitenfeld, in which the Imperials were unable to regain their lost momentum and only got their armies to a similar strength to that of Brietenfeld when combining with their allies, such as the Spanish or Austrians.
      And your last point...
      These were innovations. Id like to remind you that well before the end of the war Spain had adapted several of these into their own army, and wer on the cusp of dropping the terico completely and utterly. They spent the entirety of the early fighting against effectively rebellions, who they always outbumbered by a notable amount, and a sea war against England, their rebellions, Swedish, and Italian navies. Come the French phase, and you see Spain engaging in larger scale battles against France and look what happened. France, who used these innovations, pretty much destroyed the Spanish in any notaboe battle they fought in, with all of the exceptions pretty much *always* being because of similar circumstances as Nordlingen; loss of control over armies, fighting offensive battles outnumbered, and the Spanish always taking casualties because, from their generals own mouths, the inferiority of the Terico.

    If I recall correctly, France didn't really care about the war, but saw it as a way to weaken the Hapsburgs, who controlled the HRE and Spain at that point. So France funded and supplied the war for several years, but didn't fight itself. Sweden was the main Protestant aggressor, and France funded them. Until the Swedish king died. That could have led to Sweden pulling out entirely due to moral, which would have led to a hapsburg victory, so France and Sweden switched roles with France directly fighting and Sweden supporting the effort financially.
    Also, it was assumed that 40% of the overall German population died in this war.

    France joining the Protestant cause despite being led by a Catholic bishop, Cardinal Richelieu, is one of my favorite diplomatic moves ever. It shows what statesmanship is. Richelieu rightfully understood that the real enemy of France were the Habsburg, not the Protestants, and at the end France was one of the few countries to benefit from the war. In the same time, Richelieu was harassing the French Protestants, the Huguenots, at home. Your enemy within can be your ally abroad because this is a false acknowledgment to believe that a nation must be at war against an ideology.

      How were Richelieu and the king not excommunicated by the Pope? Up until then, the great risk of breaking Catholic unity was to be excommunicated, which had a profound spiritual impact in a world were religion provided many existential answers for the people. The prospect of dying while excommunicated was still terrifying, as it meant that Heaven was forever shut closed for that person. So being Catholic and a cardinal, how did Richelieu not fear that?

      It's even more disturbing when you know that they are basically the only reason the initially under-powered protestant side won. The Danish and Swedish interventions were both initiated and paid for by France, and it's the French armies who relived the pressure on the Swedes that were starting to lose, and finally won the war despite fighting the Spanish too (who were, if I'm not mistaken, almost not involved, as they couldn't reach the battlefield and had to deal with the Dutch [see 80 years war]). Oh, and did I mention that France initially supported Austria in its fight?
      Richelieu changed his mind when the already very powerful Hasburgs used this war to get control over the rich Bohemian lands. A single bad choice decided the fate of Austria, Spain, the Hasburgs, and Catholicism in Europe as a whole. Let that sink in.

    I have a question: Do you have a source for all the Transylvanian invasions of Austria? I've looked it up, but haven't found anything about Transylvania playing that much of an important rule in the war. I would find it interesting to read about how Transylvania got all the way to Vienna. Thanks :)

      It is very likely tbey would have besieged and taken Vienna, however the PLC saved the city once again by joining the war and cutting off transylvanian supply lines and forcing them to retreat (they were going to meet up with protstant bohemian forcez))

    • @bvthebalkananarchistmapper5642
      @bvthebalkananarchistmapper5642 Před 4 lety +1

      In addition, during winter of 1644-5, the Swedish marhsal Lenart Torstenson made agreements with the French armies and with Transylvanian prince Gyorgy Rakoczi to march on Vienna together, and they also sent messages to the protestants of Upper Austria, urging them to rebel, in the hopes of that, with the combined forces of Sweden, France, Transylvania and Upper Austria, they could besiege and capture Vienna together. Unfortunately,:Torstenson was sick throughout his lifetime and retired in late 1645, though the Swedes continued on, and linked up with the Transylvanians, as seen in the video; the French never managed to get their armies even remotely in range of Austria's core; Gyorgy Rakoczi was eventually ordered by the Ottoman sultan, to whom he was vassal of, to stand down and peace out (stupid decision on the Ottomans' part, if you ask me); Upper Austrian support for an anti-Habsburg revolt and/or a march towards Vienna never materialized. Thus, even though the Swedes and Transylvanians advanced pretty close to Vienna, the lack of French and Upper Austrian support rendered an attack in Vienna's direction, and, therefore, a siege of Vienna, not worth the risk.
