I really quite like this one. I wish that the bracelet version had been out a few months ago though! Grrrrrr. Why did Seiko take a classic design and make it so bloody unattainable? Thank goodness for the Chinese pirates, eh? Cheers, Jody

Keeping share holders happy? By making a limited edition 1.100 piece run of SLA037 at $6.300? Let's say they sold only 50.000 copies of a lower spec $500 version of this instead - the R&D would even cost a lot less on the cheaper version not to mention the machining/assembly per unit. You do the math!

This is actually sold on San Martin's Official Taobao shop in China with multiple options.
Firstly, you get a choice of logos, San Martin/LJM/Tiger Shark or having a sterile dial etc.
(Even have the option of a custom logo but you have to engage the seller/San Martin)
Secondly, you get the choice of glass(Mineral or Sapphire crystal) so both versions do exist.
Thirdly, you get the choice of a normal caseback (Depends on which logo you chose) or a custom caseback.
Forthly, you get the choice of strap (Metal/silicon).
The Standard San Martin 62 MAS comes with a Green, Gray and Blue sunburst dial, 316L steel case and C3 Lume, so a great steal.
Their off-shoot/affiliate Sharkey/Heimdallr too sells this 62 MAS Homage with a definite Sapphire crystal.
So if you want to buy this watch and are dead-set on Sapphire, buy it straight from San Martin or Heimdallr and not from the Dropshippers on Ali.

throughout horology journey of mine that span 2 decades, I dont have much exp with seikos, I kicked off with an omega, subsequently rolexs, pan... and others so on so forth. I only came across seiko just few years ago when I had my first 6r15 ~ not impressed, not overly disappointed either as with couple of hundred dollars, I cant compliant. but it looks like seiko is increasing the price substantially but with pretty much the same quality, to me that is disappointing.
and interestingly I acquired a 5626 9040 a year ago, cost wee little more than my 6r15, and man it's old but I was blown away by its quality from movement (cosc) to dial, hands, finely polished applied indices and the case design and level of polishing... I mean I started wondering, seiko absolutely has (or had) the ability to make watches as good as any swiss better rivals... they chose not to do that. and given the amount I paid for this brilliant piece, it just put the 6r15 cocktail time to shame. my only compliant (personal preference )to this watch is it's a dress watch which I dont get to enjoy it very often....pity.
so it comes back to the question, why couldn't seiko continues making watches like that... I can only explain this that seiko is trying make more profit. unfortunately in a way like giving 50% of effort and asking for a 200% return.

I've given up on Seiko, they use the same 4R35/6 and 6R15 movements in everything and the newer watches have poor QC. While these movements are great, they're not shouldn't be in watches costing $400 - $1000. Seiko's are now overpriced and I can get a better deal on Swiss Autos on the grey market. Unless they introduce a movement worth it's price tag, I'm never buying another Seiko. I still love my $350 SARB035 though.

I am very happy with my San Martin 62mas V2. I have owned the following Seiko models - skx, Turtle, Sumo, Mini-turtle, Sarb035 and Samurai. I currently own the Kinetic Tuna, Alpinist, Tuna Marinemaster 300, and recently acquired the new “baby mm200” SBDC053. My point is running through this list of Seiko’s formerly and currently owned is to lay the groundwork for saying that the quality and finish of the San Martin is as good or better than “real Seikos”.

Thanks for reviewing this, Jody. I bought it based on your review, and it's a terrific watch. I ordered it directly from San Martin on the SS bracelet. Everything about it is absolutely impressive. My only small moan or niggle is that the first link in the bracelet doesn't articulate, so it makes the watch sit a little wide on my wrist (55 mm). I can certainly live with that given the overall quality of the watch. Seiko is going down a path I don't appreciate, so as you said, I'll proudly wear my San Martin.

I'm more than happy to wear San Martin. I've got an homage tuna and have been eyeing that same watch u just got for awhile. I've scratched my Seiko itch with an affordable save the ocean. It's a good watch, but no sapphire or ceramic bezel insert.
Why should I pay thousands, which I can't afford and refuse to pay, when I can get a quality Chinese made case with Seiko movement!? Seiko just refuses to upgrade their watches and make them affordable to most everyone when it comes to reissues. They could've upgraded the skx as you've said. Instead they discontinued them, only to reissue them one or two decades down the road for thousands of dollars.
