Rip cups i will miss them they had many functions like storing bricks, drinking cup and much more

Damn, I use one of my lego plastic cups for dishing out dry food for my dogs. ( And yes i'm talking about dog food not human food, LOL)

I personally think that the plastic cups are better than the cardboard boxes, even environmentally. Clear plastic make good storage containers.
I think they should offer both. Those who want to just recycle the box and don’t plan on storing them and those that reuse and store Lego in cups. I prefer the cups, very useful for sorting, storing, etc.

I Know the box is ECO Friendly and you can stack symmetrically maybe a few more bricks, even though you can do the same thing in a cup, if the plastic cup is fully recyclable i personally prefer the cup, they last way longer than the box and you can stack the cups inside of each other for better storage, in other words the cup wins!

@@captwookie sure, but in terms of refills, the cups are a better bargain, you'd never have to replace one, I don't know how many times a box could survive being finagled with over the years.
14:36 One feature I will miss from the cups was that the cups were waterproof/water resistant whereas the boxes are dead 💀when they hit water.

Is a minifig test even helpful at all? Like dont they just charge by 3 packs so surely even if you could fit more they would just open the box and see you have more than 3 and then charge for the multiple sets at that point so its not like the cardboard box fitting more minifigs would mean you could add more for the same price in the same manner as the PAB boxes vs cups.
When I go to Lego stores (Antwerp, Brussel, Disneyland Paris, Lille) I don't even have to close the cup, it needs to be shut enough so nothing falls out and it needs to be tapeable :p
The best are the old ones from the 90's .

Thank you for this test. Using the small gems was a really great way to test the volume and i am surprised to see how the volumes between the 2 are so close.
One plus I like is I can keep a couple collapsed boxes in my pack back to reuse for unplanned LEGO Store visits. I don't use the cups for storage.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Cardboard boxes definitely easier to recycle. However, the cups should be reused and reused and reused etc, as this would then mean fewer trees cut down. Plastic boxes or cups are super durable but guess a lot of people just use them once and chuck them out? Not sure how many times a cardboard box would get reused? I do prefer paper bags or boxes for minifigs and in lego sets as generally these are single use? Will be interesting to see what other people think. 🤔
It would be ideal. Whenever I visit my local lego store though, I'd say 25% or less bring their existing cups instead of getting new ones. I'm sure Lego also keeps tabs on that because you get a small descount for reusing, and has decided that using cardboard boxes is more ecologically sustainable due to the small amount of folks reusing the cups
Most people rarely fully plan their visit to a Lego store and rarely even remember to take their cups with them. So I think the cups get reused very rarely, even if people wanted to. But it's just not something you carry around with you when you go shopping. I hope you still get a discount for reusing the cardboard box, but I doubt people will do that simply because it's not a priority in their mind to remember to take their pab boxes with them when going shopping into a mall or something. Good thing about the cardboard boxes is they can probably fold into a backpack without taking space so if you carry the same bag around you could have them handy in some side pocket or something. But still, probably something only hardcore Lego buyers would think about.
Both have pros and cons but still prefer normal pick a brick cups and b a m blister packs for more storage and display

The boxes are worse in most ways, as displayed with the bulging. Move it a bit when traveling and it will rip, unlike plastic containers. Also plastic containers are reusable, cardboard boxes arent, especially if you have a tape seal and it rips the cardboard when opening it.
Should also give us the option to buy a plastic cup and charge slightly less for every reuse

Yeah even tho. Now with the boxes s coming. Any one with old pab cup s should be able to ree you's them I say ...yeep or. Have the cup s. Made recyclable..plastic ...
But the boxes will warp if you try to pack too much lego into them, this will never work. And will only waste more boxes as people break them. The clean up after a box breaks in the store will be epic, and will happen every hour.

I was a big fan of stacking 4x6 plates in the middle of the cup.
These boxes seem pretty sweet.
The biggest problem I see with these is a lot of spilled pab boxes at the Lego store. Imagine kids filling those up while holding them with only one hand. Or even adults. I would totally accidentally spill that flimsy cardboard thing full of gems for example. We'll see but I think that will become a thing with these.

I'll likely just stick with pick a brick on their site. In-store pickabrick walls don't seem to keep colors like black, gold, and dark grey often, which is what I've been working with

Overall great on Lego for keeping them the same volume. I can’t wait for the switch, it’ll make stacking much easier. I believe you’ll be able to fit more even though volume is the same since you can fill dead space water in the box Vs cup.
I’m saving my cups, I have at least 50. They are great for sorting. I hope I can snag a few more before my store switches.
That "zip lock and weight" method you mentioned intrigues me. I think i would prefer that as it would allow me to get many larger and strange shaped bits without having to fit them into a plastic cup.
I like the zip loc bag method as well. But I also like the cups better than the cardboard boxes.

I always over fill my cups to the point they need their lids taping on...the shop assistants are all really super cool and allow it. Hate to see how the boxes will split open when maxed out!!

I compliment your use of the gems to measure how volume translates. While doing calculations based on w x l x h will give you a number the curved container for square bricks idea does provide some nuance.
Watching this makes me want to drive to my nearest Lego store and just make figs and pick bricks
I just used them today (12-5-23) for the first time. At first I felt the same way. I didn't like them. But I KNEW they would fit a lot more bricks because of their rectangular shape. I do very much like them for that reason. I still like the plastic cuts because they were so much more useful in storing bricks. I don't know. I like them both.

I did get a discount when i brought my own cups, the discount will be removed they said to me in the store.....
I prefer the plastic cups, they were more durable and they stack, also they never added to waste because they were so useful and even a discount if you reused them, SO WHY THE HECK RETIRE THEM?
Thanks for the volume test! I love the new paper containers. They are easier to store your bricks and like the intent it is environmentally friendly.
I purchase a lot of extra bricks so in the future I won't have to buy so many LEGO storage containers which are pretty expensive and does not contribute to more building bricks!!! Whenever they become available in the USA I will be in the store shopping for building bricks.

What was even the purpose of making them cardboard? We don’t throw away the plastic cups we keep them. But these cardboard ones art strong so I will probably throw them away, creating more waste. Great idea Lego
I understand why, and yes I m sorry to see the iconic cups leave. That being said, I am a stacker when I go. The change will benefit me.
Why the heck didn't Lego ever just make stackable plastic square containers instead of goofy round ones that aren't as compatible with basic brick shapes? And transitioning to cardboard? Bad move for the consumer. How long are those going to last for storage compared to the plastic cups? Gonna have to go buy plastic containers for them anyway. Ans small pieces are going to slide out through the top flap. Eco-friendly appeals to many people, it usually just turns me off to pick something else.

Onlu thing I dislike is the lack of stacking. The old cups could stack like lego bricks or the lego cd jewel cases. It added to the charm.
The bumps would help a lot for storage too since they stick together and not slide or topple over when stacked. These do look nice and have more space for storage, but they're just boxes.
I do like the bright colours though.
Maybe a see through envelope address window on the box would be nice to see content…or at least boxes easier to write on

I managed to get 2 cups in all my years of collecting, not really a fan of th e cardboard boxes because they won’t last as long as the cups so they can’t be used for permanent storage

These boxes are definitely the way to go from an ecological standpoint. Sure, they are single use while plastic cups could be reused very often, but from my experience, that only happens with a small percentage of customers. I'm sure Lego kept tabs of what percentage of customers actually reused old cups and then decided what would be more sustainable.
Really? NO, they are NOT single use plastic cups. Unless they break easily, you CAN reuse them.
If people are not reusing the cups, it's on them, not the cups itself.

Are Lego stores that stingy? I’ve only been to Liverpool and Birmingham but I had a good half inch gap that they taped down for me and just told me to be careful of them spilling out in the bag (they did xD) but they didn’t question me at all.
I’m looking forward to the boxes because they are about the same for awkward pieces but you get way more with bricks. I saw someone get an extra 30+ bricks in the box over the cups. Obviously that doesn’t sound like much but when it’s vs bricklink prices it’s a few quid extra value!
Most stores are pretty lenient, as long as the lid closes and they will tape it closed. I've never tried to get the 1/2 inch gap but have done 1/4 inch gap with tape to hold it. I think he is just trying to see if the volume is the same in each container.

Do we really need a 23 minute video to determine that the new boxes actually hold more bricks? I've tested them and the new boxes do hold a bit more Lego than cups. This video should have been five minutes, tops. Waste of time for the most part.
