- Skill Based Matchmaking, or just matchmaking in Apex Legends is by far the games biggest issue. Long queues, insane lobbies, hidden mmr ranked matchmaking, mixtape matchmaking issues and possible solutions. I go over all of it. i’ve ran into at least 20 games in a row where they have 10-20k kills and i only have 2k kills
What they’ve done the past 2-3 seasons to somehow make this game even worse is impressive. They made ranked and pubs the exact same, they made solo queuing impossible, and they are content with marksmen meta still

I went from playing 2-3h per day to 2-3h per week with a friend, soon we might drop the game entirely even though its the best fps in terms of gameplay. The matchmaking is the worst of any multi game I've played.

trust me bro this hits home for me. I used to be very very good at COD and what not get on the leader boards for S and D and domination even played against Rambo who was a pro cod player. Then switched to PC played CSGO got global and faceit level 10 the point I am making is I am the top % of players whenever I played an FPS but past 3/4 years man I gave up playing because 1 even casual game modes are hard and honestly it is depressing to see the enemy team get the similar calibre players to me but my team are just 70% of the time worse? Tried Apex same issue. Best decision I made was to give up gaming sad to see but my friends do not even play anymore because it is unplayable.
I compare this to Destiny 2 both games have SOLID potential to be the best FPS in there genres but there ruined by the devs bullshit

For solo life, it's hard cause when you know that you're a decent player, but get paired with others who don't even know how to use their tac vs. teams who got 4k badges, pred, master stacks, and this is in pubs it get demoralizing. This also goes especially for mixtape

Me too,i used to play all day every day with my friend but now i might play for 2 hours per month,i love Apex the gun play is beautiful and i would stop playing COD and overwatch,i dont know how hard it is to fix the matchmaking in video games but no way its that hard after 5 years

I queued up with a new player I invited to try Apex yesterday, guess who was in the lobby? The pub match was literally filled with Preds and sweats. I’ll let this sink in… a new player, with just an hour long of gameplay encountered many Apex Predators. This is just stupid. Don’t know how Respawn hires people, but their employees seriously lack critical thinking
To be honest I don't care about pubs but playing apex after 9 months, getting placed in rookie 1 and getting pushed every game by full stacked premade teams with 4k+20 kill badges in this rank is awful... how is this even possible? I got like 1 game where i get first with like 6-7 kills, and 20 games with random teammates instadropping and suiciding in the first 2 minutes like wtf?
They should put a message out for any new players that come to the game to fuck off or get fucked because their most likely going to get destroyed by these sweaty people that haven't left the chair for hours. This is my average day at this rate, i go to school, go to the gym and work hard and im physically and mentally drained and i want to play some apex as a treat and as your average casual player with a kd of 0.53 i get these sweaty crack heads running about and im already punching my leg and have had enough and its only been 3 matches.
My buddy was looking for a new BR so I introduced him to apex and it went downhill after that. In pubs were literally going up against lobbies full of predators and have zero chance. I’m all for learning the hard way but if your matchmaking can’t somewhat cater to new players there will never be to much growth for player count. It’s just to bad because when it’s matched evenly it’s a fun game but when a casual goes against pros yea the game will continue to die.
so your mmr is so high you only face the best of the best - but you cant get good games in the lobbies - but the lobbies stay the same... hmmm. weird. i dont have those issues and can have fun in pubs with friends who are between lvl 25 and 250... do you use disc*rd?
I have never seen Apex be so bad for pubs, I can't survive solo anymore. I was an average player, but now I feel like a new payer again. I never died so much in a season, except season 0 when I was learning the game. Maybe I am so bad that I should delete the game, but the situation is getting worse.
Nobody talks about the mental impact of random teammates hot dropping amd leaving immediately after instant death. Solo queing sucks big time

i am a 96 level beginner player i am being matched up against 500 level people
As a 5.88 kdr solo player pre sbmm season 2, ive stopped playing seasons ago, i could never play with friends, and my teamates are legit bronze, but the enemy teams are pred stacks 24/7 when i finally win a match against all odds, the game then made sure i would legit die on drop for the next few hours, the only game mode that would bring me back is solos
The Octane movement in beginning made me laugh so hard
I don't mind having tough enemies, its just that my teammates seem to be weaker a lot of the time so it makes for a frustrating experience
The quo times are so long in all modes because the sbmm is cranked to 10000 and they are just putting everyone together in everything. Haven't played a mixtape mode where people were bad on both teams... out here playing control like there's damn money on the line and people have a gun to their head 😒 so exhausting having to sweat every single damn game

I agree with all the points you have made in this video especially as an average to below average player. Its crazy how many preds and diamonds players we see even if combined the highest rank we accomplished was plat once. Also when one of the friends doesnt play and we play duos it does feel easier to play and when I play solo, no filling on duos is enjoyable. Also thanks to the Three Strikes LTM pubs and ranked seem easier maybe its just placebo but hidden MMR in ranked does basically defeat the purpose of ranked all together imo.
i fight pro players literally every single day with lvl 2-20 randoms in pubs and it's so frustrating bc its just impossible as a soloq player to really compete against these pro player trios in a pubs match when youre queued up with new to apex players its exhausting and irritating. wont lie it's had me in tears one or two times simply bc im on a d2 player im not quite there yet to be playing against the top 100-50 preds man, especially with randoms like the ones i get.
My K/D went from 1.2 to 0.6 this season. I'm an average player being matched with the most highly skilled players I have ever seen. It's impossible to keep up and I have no idea why the matchmaker thinks I should be in those lobbies. In my opinion skill based matchmaking should be scrapped entirely. It's a failed experiment.
@@pacoloco9008 Well obviously. That's what I'm saying. Why am I being put up against Apex Predators when I have a 'skill issue' as you say? I share those stats to demonstrate how updates to the matchmaking have skewed the algorithm's ability to fill fair matches.

As soon as I heard they were going to change matchmaking, I was all excited cause i thought I’d be able to get some friends to finally play with me (they hate the game because of how difficult it is). But no. It got worse.

Don't forget when you Q up with some friends everyone gets a diffrent amount of points because of the hidden mmr. I get almost every game about half lp than the others. I guess i'm just a pro or the game hates me

@@wattyswrld MMR in ranked was the worst thing that was ever introduced to this game, now since my first placement match i play against pred teams and pro players while in rookie, now i'm in silver 1 failing my promo trials because whenever i get the 3kp i get insta thirded by jesus christ and his squad with triple pred badge and whenever i get to end game teams seems to ignore each other and just focus my team even though they're literally looking at each other without cover, i'm feeling like just playing mixtape when i feel like playing apex and going to another game, too bad the finals won't be fully out yet
i completely forgot about this, me and my friend were playing and hes like cracked at the game, like genuinly could be a pred if he tried enough. so i dont mind getting like half the lp he gets, but at the same time, we just won a match where we BOTH did good. and i have a 5 or so kills but i only get 300lp? and he got like 500-600lp? like i get it, final kill of the game, revive, etc. SO in conclusion he obviously deserves that, and i dont mind, but the moment im with randoms, 400lp? when i did dogcrap? i dont really understand tbh
Assume the skill distribution of players to be similar to be bell curve of iq scores. Most people will be average because that’s what that means, few are really good and few are really bad. If a world with no SBMM you’d vs in majority average players. Average players can kill average players and better players can kill more average players because that’s what means to be better. Where SBMM is a thing the matchmaking balance would mean that on paper (stats) all players are equal, which is stupid.
My kd is season 2 was 1.55, I gradually built that up over the years to on average 2.3 with my highest being season 17 at 3.45 which was my easiest season so far but I accepted that maybe it’s my 4 years of time investment playing off, that I am better. Then in season 18 they said they adjusted matchmaking which was felt because I rebound to 2.2. (On an extra note I vs’d the #9 Bangalore twice that season and by the second time he was #8). Then season 19 hit and my kd tanked to 1.4.
On paper I am worse than I was in season 2, which is what SBMM wants, but it doesn’t make sense since how can I be worse than I was 4 years ago when I never stopped, how am I worse as an adult than when I was 13. Without SBMM I might get worse on paper because the average skill increases but the kd should then drop by maybe 0.1 but not a whole 0.9, that’s artificial.
Luckily for apex they released a banger mode that got my kd back to my average, which is also a mode for which they turned off/down SBMM. If that wasn’t put in I would’ve just not played, because mixtape isnt any better with the SBMM.
Lastly the queue times, I pull up steam charts on my 2nd monitor to see 150k players online and the game can only find 20 other people for me to play with and it take a minute to find a game yh. 150k players on but I can only play with 0.0133% of the player population like the game just has to cook my game to be the perfect amount of unfun. Back in season 4 you could press ready up and it would pull you into a game the literal (no joke no cap no silliness) next second.
The game isnt saying your worse, its putting you against equally skilled players more often. If you get put in bronze lobbies as a diamond player your kdr will likely be really high. If you get put in diamond lobbies with other diamonds i can guarantee your kdr wont be as high. Kdr is not a skill metric.
I have no idea where I sit in the skill ladder. The game keeps putting me in master/Pred lobbies yet I’m consistently getting absolutely destroyed by these players. Sometimes I’ll win a 1v1 and other times I’ll be able to win against a full team but it’s rare.
At this current moment I feel like I’m just being used to let other people enjoy their matches . I don’t think I have any reason to be in these lobbies at all other than that. It just sucks because I want to enjoy playing this game but it’s like no matter how much I improve in skill I’m constantly getting destroyed. This just makes me feel like I’m really bad at the game and I will never get better at it. I’ve taken multiple breaks over the last few seasons for this very reason. The matchmaking is killing my enjoyment of the game and I am so close to just quitting and giving up. I don’t play ranked just pubs so I shouldn’t be facing the best players in the world 100% of the time.
The farthest I’ve ever gotten in ranked is gold and I feel like I could have gone farther I just didn’t care to. That was back when ranked matched based on rank. I tried ranked this season landed in rookie 1 just to go in and die to a previous season Pred player. It felt really bad to me
As a solo player, i totally agree with you points on the broken ranking system. Hidden MMR is just a way to hide the fact that they are putting hard stuck bronzes in with Plats and above. Seriously thinking about going back to halo. After 18 seasons EA still manages to disappoint its fan base.
Have not gotten the enjoyment of playing Apex for 3 seasons already. The whole hidden MMR thing is bollocks, I solo queued to Diamond and almost hit masters previously now I have to deal with a bronze promotion game that feels impossible to finish.
100% agree about matchmaking being ridiculous rn. That being said... can we talk about that vantage shot at 5:18. Vantage's ult has insane bullet magnetism. I paused and went frame by frame at 5:18 and you can literally see the bullet curve to correct course to hit wraith. That shiz is busted
😂 the hit box is very big, but it also might be the bug with bullet tracers this season. Either way, nobody plays her self no one cares haha. But I like her and I do think that she’s good.
I’m a brand new player with like 24 kills and 3 wins and my teammate in pubs yesterday had over 100,000 kills. As someone that’s always played cod this type of matchmaking makes no sense.

Everything your saying is straight facts season 19 I made it to bronze 1 and I’m taking a break cus I keep getting in champ+ lobbies it don’t feel right for me to be fighting so hard for my life in bronze lobbies, I don’t think im that bad. 😭😭
It’s so broken rn, my teammates disconnect and do sh*t in every match, while fighting master and pred 3 stacks ratting or tryharding in pubs, not playing this game for a while
Agreed. Also, yeah provisional matches are dumb. IMO everyone should just start off at like Bronze 1 or something and if they want, they could just implement where your first 5 games, you get bigger skill bonuses etc so high level players will move up to silver/gold much faster than the average player or something like that.. But, 10 games just to basically get a slightly varied starting spot is dumb. Especially if you try solo-q provisionals.. (I made that mistake)

If you kept your rank and kept working on it throughout multiple seasons you would actually feel rewarded for reaching higher tiers and as the skill in apex grows you might even rank down.
The whole point of ranked is to.. well rank players! Put them on a scale so they can compare to each other. Having preds fight preds and noobs fight noobs both in the same rank just so they have something to grind on makes no sense to me. Maybe there should be a separate seasonal rank and total rank so that you can do both
Had a 5 kd for the first 50 games of this season and got matchup up with premade squads who are all sweats with 20k+ kills. My teammates on the other hand are level 20s and 80s. I feel bad for solo good players, I’m fortunate to have some friends that play so I don’t have to be solo as much
right, my average KD is 3.6 but i get teamed with kids who arent even in the 100's yet and im like lvl 800 (prestige tier or whatever) its exhausting, can't get a game in with any momentum bc my randoms don't even know how to aim their weapons or keep up with me or the lobby itself.
@voidedego same. I've finally given up. I'll check back in next season to see if sbmm is adequate. Otherwise, I'm done with the game. Sucks, 4k hours of playtime. Worked hard to get good at the game. Hurts to surrender. Still though, probably time to cut my losses. Unless they make some serious changes that make sense, I'm out.

Exactly.. that's the part that pisses me off... As masters in most seasons and definitely diamond player I ain't running from no smoke , I have plenty of clips on tiktok or ig 1 vs 1 smoking a pred however if your going to place me in sweaty lobbies full of killers how does it make sense to give me 2 randoms who have no chance in a fight.. its so bad if i die i just leave the lobby as i know these two randoms who are either running away the moment a bullet flies or ill drop 1 or if im lucky 2 of the enemy while these randoms are hiding in a corner hoping i kill all 3. .. not capping this is almost every game now . Fuck my randoms can have full purp and attachments and bullets and still looting right next to me while I'm fighting a whole squad. And don't gete started on randoms who absolutely know they are trash and wanna drop stupid hot then spam ping non stop because they got smashed for breaking off in a hot drop going way away from their team . Like bro why do that of you know you barely get kills anyway just fn drop with your team smfh

Ive only been playing for two days but this is my initial take on the sbmm in aprx legends mixtape( havent done to much br and it would be harder to tell). My first day i was at the bottom of my team ( with 1-3 kills roughly) while 1-2 other players were at the top with 10+ kills but every teams scoreboard looked the same. The second day i was somewhere in the middle of team while there were 1-2 players still with 10+ kills and the lowest people on each team being near 0. Another difference ( may be because im a returning player) is the first day i was getting jumped on while my team mates ran around getting kills while the second day ,depending on the mode, i seemed to be taking on teams or people working together more, i was almost the only team member i saw while a group of 4 or 5 stuck and moved together. The first day in control there were mostly controler legends while the second i was the only one

I played literally my first apex game ever yesterday (after being hard carried, by a random, through the orientation matches) ... I was put in a match with people with over 10k kills. Like... my guy... I barely got in my head that there's no fall damage, forget my abilities, idk what is going on. Lolol, we got some kind of rocket bombardment called in on us and died. Me and two randoms.
I started playing Apex in Season 17. I'm not the best player but I'm not the worst either. I would describe myself as an average player with my 1.3 K/D. Anyway, I played Duo with my Duomate and he has a K/D of 0.4. That means he's not that good and we were completely destroyed by Movementless and by Xylas as a duo. The matchmaking really sucks.

I solo queue and it’s to the point that I barely play apex anymore. When I do it’s maybe 4 game before I get fed up
you nailed it dude, it's some bullsh*t player retention model. there's an actual formula for w/l they want every player to hit. there have been papers on this. it's confirmed apex started this like ~1 year ago. but for anyone with more than 5 brain cells it's just frustrating. which is honestly kind of the point. they want us to be frustrated cos in some way that contributes to retention.
Just installed Apex after not playing for around a year, still on level 30 yet my enemies in the lobby are level 200-300+...
Im good but I solo q, I have the longest q times and run into the same 3 stack kill grinders every day.

I have legit been getting teammates who are less than level 100, this is just actually unfair at this point.
After playing since launch and having over 5k hours, apex lost its fun. I pretty much always soloQ but feels pointless and overall more frustrating than fun, which is why ive only played one time in the last month and that was just to check out the SP changes. Solo mode would honestly fix everything for me

S19 solo q rank was so rough for me. I'd be going against pro teams and preds. But at least I'd randomly get on their teams once in a while, which was cool.

I see many youtubers like Raynday either praising the game, saying Apex is nit gonna go away and only minor things holding it back or others (for example JMeyels) saying, all we need is more content. I disagree, fix matchmaking and many people will get back because matchmaking is the foundation, wether the game is enjoyable or not.
Third: EA loves this matchmaking because people grind when it is hard, chasing that one good game. In the past it used to work, but I feel like more and more players are getting fed-up and stop playing the game. I used to play 3-4 hours a day, now I either play firing range when it's GunRun or play Mixtape. Trios I get matched against Triple stacl masters, preds or 20bombs 4k players. I do have 20bombs 4k myself, but I don't play the game as much due to its state and because i completed my studies and I work now. My hidden mmr probably still high even in pubs, my actual skill isn't as it used to be. My teammates mostly less good or just playing randomly, dying and disconnecting. I hope Respawn realizes that the gane needs change in matchmaking. Such a waste of Potential, Apex at its core is such a good Game

Ranked is so bad right now. I’m stuck in Gold 1 promotion trials and can’t get a win cuz I keep getting sweaty master lobbies with 10 squads in a small ass zone. I also miss being able to show off my old diamond trails from season 6,7,8, like I grinded a ton for that

Its rough out there, I'm not terrible at the game, but dont have the time to really fine tune my skill anymore cause life. I get into master lobbies in both ranked/pubs all the time and I'm nowhere near that level skill wise. I can hold my own, but damn I have to be dialed in 100% of the time and it gets exhausting. Actually got matched with someone with 3 Pred badges during my silver promos 😂

And I’m only level 129 and recently just got back into the game and it really hurts to have some kid who plays everyday shit on you while your trya have fun
I got preds alot in s18, im not good enough to fight press i have a ss of me dying to 4x preds with 60k kills on pathfinder and 17m damage in pubs i have ss of me dying to more preds as well
I agree the matchmaking is terrible - in ranked, in PUBs, in Three Strikes, in Gun Run, Control, Arenas… but why is a Masters player complaining about it? I’m usually gold or plat. For everyone bronze-diamond, the matchmaking is terrible. Masters is the highest rank besides Pred. So yes your lobbies should be sweaty. No gold or diamond player really wants to play against Masters players but we do anyway 😊
I play on console so can’t speak for pc, but season 18 was horrendous for sbmm and hence skipped the whole season. But I must admit season 19 is better for me. Also your CZcams thumbnails are fire, do you use blender and photoshop.

@@wattyswrldI don’t know if it because the player base is smaller even with cross play or not but I seem to get very high rated console players in my lobby frequently like 100k kills on a legend players multi seasonal preds ect even though I only have 12k kills account wide and a 2-2.5kd on average, side note why do 3stack preds all focus one person at a time in casual like just fight me 1v1 so I stand a sliver of a chance 😂

I suck and I'm in those same lobbies, maybe a tier lower but it overlaps with them because I get killed by the same people. It's terrible, the game is miserable. I like to play by myself and I have to get destroyed for 2-3 hours straight to get one playable game. It's rough out here

I’m getting to a point where I don’t want to play anymore. I’m an average player constantly landing with masters and preds, no matter what mode I play. I love ranked, but it’s impossible right now.
I decided to start my pc account before cross progression got out to me today, first match on I got preds and on console couldn’t even get diamonds half the time. Pc matchmaking is definitely challenging and it’s doing too much.
I just quit like 2 days ago after looking at my wrap and apex playing time. I don’t even have fun playing the game. And spend all my time stressing playing against 4k 20 bomb players straight from jump. I’m playing warzone now

I think the MM in this game makes people stop trying. A lot of people have bad experiences in a game but just play it out of addiction and familiarity though which is also a big issue. If the match making wasn't 1 out of every 20 games you get decent teammates we would be having this discussion every season. I don't know what kind of SBMM they have employed, but it's not at all when every game is a bot or a person that tries to 1v3 because they're trying to emulate streamers they'll never be as good as.

On the ranked topic I really think that if you are in bronze or silver and your going into your hidden MMR lobbies which could be masters or diamond and you want to play ranked for the first time ever and you have to play in these high leveled lobbies is insane.

I had 2 good games in mixtape yesterday and then got matched in a tdm with console kill grinders (I play on console btw) and all 6 players of the enemy team had 20,000+ br kills. Mind you I barely have over a 1 kd and im being matched with this?? I was the only person on my team with kills on the board and I was trolling using the p2020 because this tdm match was aids.
I’ll be the first to admit it, I am not very good at apex. All of my friends quit apex because every game, whether I’m with them or not, I get at least a masters level lobby. I have a easier time In ranked than casuals, but I don’t want to play ranked because of the high risk/reward.
just got a ps5, im level 40 and every single pub im dying to players with 10,000 kills(minimum) 20bombs and 4ks(or 3 glowing pred badges)
I think the only reason they have consistent numbers for people who stop playing after rolling a lobby is because that player knows what's in store for them for the next game. Like yesterday I finally earned a hammer for octane and won my first game. I dare not play again because I know for some wack reason even with 8 kills and 2000+ damage my last game, the champion squad is going to be a 3 stack pred squad. I won't even get to show off inwon my last game to the lobby😭
My first unranked game after over a season of not playing was against 4 full pred teams, i have never gone past mid platinum
And also yeah on my main i get terrible rookie level teammates for teammates going against the full tsm roster..
And when we go to the mixed playlist it’s the same thing lol. Yeah man it’s bad.
I’m a console player that started at the end of season 11 playing solo queue only pubs. I’ve been stuck in triple stack pred lobbies after the first week and If it’s not preds, it’s smurfs
As someone who solo que 90% of the time it's hell. I can't even get a decent game anymore because I'm getting matched against 3 stacked sweaty coms Pred pre made squads.
Even when I play with freinds it's still the same and sometimes even worser.
I've deleted Apex. I will only come back if they get rid of sbmm in pubs until then I'm just gonna play other games.
I’m not sure what’s going on in the game but I was solo q’ing other night, and it was usual Tripple pred masters etc. then I joined 2 friends both also cracked and we played a whole night of basically bots. It’s like because we were 3 stacking it gave us a way easier night

Exactly the reason why I quit and dont touch this game. I literally join into lobbies that dont match my skill, what I mean by that is that they are 5x higher levels than me
For example, 500 max level, 3500 damage, and over 100 wins, plus my damage to win/loss ratio doesn't make since. Since I main wraith, I got 200k damage total for her, and only 7 wins. Bro like what?🤣 When I started playing Apex in season 5, it was a lot easier back then, Now in this new generation of players and the messed up ranked system, no players can have fun anymore. It would be more fair if Respawn matched your lobbies with your Apex stats. And I think the messed up matchmaking system goes for Warzone 1 as well. I started as a new player for that game, and I was playing against waterfall sweats. Then again I was bad, but Apex I was actually good at. It's just sad now that no one can have fun playing games anymore😢

Im level 13 have a .47 kd and i get paired with preds, masters and guys with 20 bombs every single game. I cant get a kills in these lobbies. I cant get over 100 damage. Me and 4 of my friends quit the game because we cant compete. How is the game going to grow when new players are treated this way?
Bro I’ve never played a duo game, I’m in console and everytime I queue up into a duo lobby I’m legit just sitting there for 30+ minutes yet trios I can get into a game in literally seconds (update just tried to queue into a duo and I was the only player in queue for 15 minutes straight before I left to go play trios) 🤦🏾♂️

I cant get into a match without people sweating so hard you can physically feel the sweat dripping onto you. Ever since i started playing this game i always end up against pred players and i just started like how tf does that make sense
Honestly the match making for ranked has been horrible these past few seasons, I've been playing since season 0 and the ranked experience is very much harder this time around. I keep playing against actual master/pred players. I'll admit I duo que with my boy and we don't have a third but the fact that we have somewhat fresh players on our team (lvl 20-90) in ranked is ridiculous. Season 17 I ended the season Diamond, then Season 18 I was hardstuck Gold. The skill gap between players in the que is very noticeable. Its ruining the experience for sure.
I started playing the game and started playing rank when I’m at level 50 and I’m stuck at rookie no matter how hard I try 😅😢
The math doesn't math. Server load for a free game means capped on how much money can be spent and allocated to hosting matches. Once you parse for locations/timezones, expected traffic, players qued, match type, skill codes, + more: You end up making algorithms predicated on top tier objectives and don't have dynamic allocation of server resources.
