  • Today Jim has all four draft horses out disking the corn field! Jim is using our Belgian team (Lady & Bill) and our Percheron team (Ken & Buck) together. He also explains a little about hitching up four horses and some different ways to hitch up the lines. Abby puts the drone up for a little bit to get a birds eye view of the process!
    Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

    I often times miss living in the rural areas of N.Y. State and will take a trip through New York's farm country and communities on Google Maps. I've been up your way, right by your farm too, Jim & Ms. Brenda. Google Maps helps me go anywhere. Just last night I went around Arizona. I miss seeing fields with cows grazing, and hearing the sounds of plows and discs being pulled through the fields. I actually miss working on a farm.

    The hitch to disc is quite impressive, shows you have a lot of experience with it and the horses. The lines to control the horses is a maze to me, but that shows my total lack of experience. The more I watch your horses and teamed together I am realizing the personalities of the horses and I think the owners personality comes thru via the horses also. Beautiful animals, thanks for the ride along.

    I forgot, I know it was in a previous video, what is the two double trees hooked to? Since I never drove more than the two mules I only knew single tree and double trees. Maybe one video each week you could point out and name the parts of the harness to give us viewers repetition of the proper names, then when you use the name, we will know exactly what part of the hitch and harness you are talking about. I also want to thank you for the end part, I really do enjoy watching how well trained your horses are trained to wait till you tell them before they head to the trough. It is just beautiful how well trained they are.

  • @openrangelivestockguarddog4041

    Thank you for the explanation of the change in your driving lines setup, most appreciated.
    Jim could you do a video on care of the horses neck, how to avoid sores, rinsing necks off after work, etc. Anything related to keeping the horses healthy and comfortable in collar please.

    • @louisecassidy5991
      @louisecassidy5991 Před 2 lety +1

      Jim has it set up with the cart so most weight is on the back. Also very careful that collars fit. If you groom before work, no mud or anything to cause sores. Grooming after work, horse will flinch and you will know where it might begin and make adjustments. We shall see more of this when the new harnesses come in to play, they will take some mucking about for a while, the old ones are all nicely worked into shape.

    Sawmill for your edgings there's a simple way to cut and bundle them rarely quick and easy for sale or easy moving for your boiler in bundles as big or little as you want basically whatever waight works. I can't work depending due to health but part time I could feel usefully for a change.

    Obedience and training is a good thing with horses - wonder if it works with humans?

    Enjoyed this alot . Do you use nose baskets with screen to keep the flys off the horses noses & they hook onto the bridles with a snap . Thanks for all the great shots !

    Great video. When you are using 4 horses is there a reason you prefer running 4 abreast vs 2 ranks of 2 horses?

    At the end, to let them drink, do you go by the hierarchy among them, or do they have to comply to the order you had set. Because, at the end, I don't know if it's Buck or Ken but he sure is patient.

    Was the rope over the door an added security measure or are the horses loose in the barn over lunch break and the rope is the only thing keeping them in?

    Curious as you ever drive the four in groups of two? As 4 stacked or infront of eachother as groups of two.
