  • Green eyes were the ones I saw in the dark
And then a forest growing in the folds of soft cotton curtains
Willow branches raking the edge of the river
where water swirls in glass rings on your arms
I hold your hand and you hold
    Small leaves
In my dreams, I am always running from storms
    Snow, rain, bodies
I have felt the warmest sunshine that was ever saturated
    By blue
And it wasn’t on the 12-foot tides of Maine
Instead of evergreen there were dried eucalyptus, Queen Ann’s lace and hay
The smell of August is stunning
Then sometimes what always feels like four years ago, when
I felt my grandmother’s hand on my shoulder
I could smell her cigarettes and orange
She poured me Ruby Red and went to cut flowers for dinner
