I visited Peterhead from New Zealand and overheard a local family talking. I asked my friend from Edinburgh if they were speaking English . He said of course, so I asked him what they were saying. He said He didn't know.

Well, that was because they were speaking Scots which is a language all of its own.

I was born in Aberdeen but had relatives in Peterhead (probably still have) but I live in the states now. I understood the accent just fine. Mind I used to live between Turriff and Banff out in the middle of nowhere at Fisherie so I heard all those accents as a kid.

Thank you for your comment and yes these accents are disappearing now, unfortunately.

James, there's nae doubt that Broch and Peterheid accents are different. I worked at the BOC base in Peterheid in 1977 and 1978 (with a few Brochers) and at times we had to ask the locals to repeat what they meant (and they us). As I get auler I appreciate a the Buchan accents :)

You are correct. I'm a Brocher (Braitsee) born and raised in the 60's.
The 'Bluemogner' toung (Peterhead) is very different to mine. (for me that is)
      16 miles away.
Going East aswell, I can spot Buckiemen as seen as they open their moo.

25:29 In NE Scots the past tense of the English word 'Laughed' is 'Luch' (u as in the up, ch is a mack of the throat guttural sound)
The present tense in Buchan Scots is 'Lach' (again ch is back of the throat)
