I totally agree with your assessment Brad. I have also had a cub killed and eaten right in front of two clients and I, in 2021. It was in Aug and lots of fish running, at Silver Salmon Creek. A larger but young boar was the killer. Humans are still worse.

Thank you for the update. Mostly thank you for your honest opinion as to why this infanticide occurs. I also have been told cats do this as well. It's a difficult reality for those of us who are animal lovers but the reward of watching many of these bears makes it worth the known reality of nature. Thank you for this great work you do. I'm so happy I came upon your videos. My first one was of the mother defending her cubs from the boar so thank you again for the update.

All that fog it gets like that in katmai iam very sure she is somewhere safe we humans may never know but the bears always knew stay safe✨😃
Thanks for sticking to the facts. Grizzly bears killing cubs so they can reproduce doesn't explain why there is actual footage of grizzly bears killing black bear cubs and black bears to eat. The facts support you.

I myself have struggled with pain and depression drinking have been homeless at times and carried jobs and camped in the woods of Ohio. I could understand wanting to do what Tim did! Being homeless on the streets meeting certain humans I totally understand why ! For if a bear kills you it's just hungry and needs to eat! Humans on the other hand...Well. ?

Thank you for your comment on the bears. Appreciate the information. Losing the beautiful small cub of Grazer was very painful and now I just do not know about Otis and that if very painful, too. I think everyone gets it that these are bears and we are putting our human emotions on them and we should not do that but it is still painful. I wanted to keep talking about it on the Katmai chats...I wanted to understand how everything works about the bears and what they may feel and think and grieve and I wanted to understand what will ahppen to Otis. It is impossible not to look at those beautiful cubs or Otis and not love them or care about them. I feel like many folks out there have found a lot of joy in watching their favorite bears. It is confusing to me to pick our favorite bear for fat bear week, etc., and then just not talk about it all when they pass away. Talking about it, and learning about the actions is a lovely way to memorialize it for me. Many people may not want to talk about it at all and I have to appreciate that idea, also. Thank you for taking time to give us your thoughts and teach us about the bears and the beauty and the hardship of nature.
@@ChloeLouiseTheRonnieRepublic oh sorry for the long response but it’s good for others to see. Otis, sweet Otis..I Love him too. I knew last yr that I would not see him again. What gives me comfort is that I’m sure he’s died in his sleep dreaming about salmon. As for being human or a bear it would better that than a violent death. He deserves a loving peaceful death. Thats how I keep it together. He will always be in our hearts. Plus part of him will always be on that river, every bear with blonde tips on their ears are his DNA so he will always carry on.

When did self-serving "entertainment" replace "education" in the NPS mission statement? That YT chat should be shut down as contraindicative to the interpretive ranger program, anthropomorphizing to the point of Disneyfying and even sexualizing brown bears. Preservation of park resources includes the wildlife within.
@@ruckuslee5421 Entertainment?? Self serving?? We are all learning what is behind the closed doors of our forests and things that affect our Wildlife!! Technology has given us a small peek into that we do not see with our own eyes!! I know like everyone else in the world that death goes on in our forest, that never means it does not affect our humanity and care and love for the animals. Death is always hard to look away from and ignore that it happens. There is never anything wrong with seeing the reality of the world. It’s not entertainment, it’s education. The more we learn about the forest and the oceans the smarter we get so we can make changes in our world where necessary. For example NPS’s mission and lack of protecting our resources and animal life. NPS does not want us to see the reality of what is really going on hidden from the public eye. Sorry but we’re watching you now. We see how you Don’t get involved with the survival of our wildlife.

I appreciate your opinion n your videos. Thanks for following up n letting us know what happened. I found it very interesting about the boar who killed the mother n ate her - wow, life is hard. I've noticed in other species that anyone who acts like prey (being scared or small) is the target to even their own family sometimes. Well, as humans we can only study n form opinions, we'll never know their truth, only their actions. ๏‿๏
Great observation about humans who appear as prey being turned on. "Prey" often seems to include the vulnerable, the disabled (physical or mental), etc. Those who need help most seem to get invisibly "tagged." Maybe our survival of fittest instinct is to exclude the sick/injured.

The best way to check if both cubs lives would be to climb where they were and see if the cub on the right is lying there dead or its body down the side. Sadly this is nature. Not only do the boars attack and kill cubs but do have some sows in Katmai. Last year a sow killed her 3 cubs days before hibernation. We really don’t know why, we give it our best guess. We are all just observers of nature.
Was that Amelia? I suspected/feared that since she was alone at the end and have been waiting to see if she returns and if so whether any of her cubs survived. She lost one cub a week or so before the others disappeared. Do you know that she killed the other 2? I was very attached to her beautiful female cub. If she did, it was because she was hungry-she was the last bear on the river and desperately fishing in the snow.
@@CastleMc Oh my gosh, you sound like me when it comes to the bears. Yes, I was talking about Amelia. You’re right she lost one cub and didn’t look for it. Then her last two she killed herself for food or she allowed another bear to kill them. I was in Love with the little girl. I called her Pi for “Pirate”. I wanted to see her grow up so bad. I cried for days after they died. Pi would grab and eat her mom’s fish which angered Amelia in the end.
I read up on it. Females will kill and eat their young when they feel they haven’t eaten enough to sustain themselves thru hibernation. It self preservation and part of nature. I’ve also noticed 901’s last baby has not returned. She lost all 3 to the males. We are just lucky enough to be able to observe them, even when it breaks our hearts.
@@Katherine63149 But how do you know that Amelia killed her cubs? As I said, I suspected and feared this but the Explore folks just kept saying that they had no reason to believe her cubs were gone even after she was seen alone for several weeks. So I've not been able to get any confirmation that they are gone. Her female cub was beautiful and special and I did a painting of her. You may be right that Amelia got to the point where she wouldn't share food-she seemed absolutely desperate at the end of the season and as you know was still fishing in the snow. But it seems surprising as she was known as a good mother, and kept them until the fall. Heartbreaking, I so wanted to see that female cub grow up.

@@CastleMc Explore won’t confirm it. I too did a drawing of her. At the time it happened I was not 100% sure because the mods kept giving ppl hope. But if you got to know the little girl she would never have left her mother’s side, especially when Amelia caught a fish. She was gone a few days before the youngest little boy. He lasted until a few days before the end. You’re right that she was fishing in the snow. But in the end Amelia was alone desperately trying to find food.
I would be shocked if they returned with her this summer. I would be the first one to call myself an idiot. But I’d be an overjoyed idiot. You hold onto your hope. I cried mine out last year and was so angry at Amelia. I had to remember, it’s just nature and we have no control. Nor will we ever get complete confirmation from anyone. Only the few rangers who were left would know and they’ll never tell.
Hum. Interesting thoughts. On that note, so if he doesn't try killing her offspring to trigger estrus, then there's less chance of getting to mate with her. So, there's a higher chance to increase his genetic offspring especially if he's roaming into many female territories if he kills her offspring. Also, do we know, with 100% certainty that he doesn't recognize by smell, sound, etc.. the female &/or her offspring?
Remember that female bears kick out her male cubs a great distance from her and her daughters territories. However, sows will have their daughter cubs close to or adjacent to her own territory.
Yep, many factors go into population, territories and genetic research. And we're all learning more everyday.

The small size and perhaps different kind of movement might trigger prey response. As discussed in this video. Brooks Falls has one bear that is known for going after cubs - and over time, the behavior of that bear seems to fit the criteria for all the reasons that are proposed. So, go figure.
Several of the boars at Brooks Falls kill cubs, and they tend to be the most dominant, not "old and starving." Explore tries to minimize and distract from the infanticide so as to not alienate viewers.
Your talking about 856 the dominant bear for the last few seasons and most of those incidents were not pre arranged one if the mum hadn’t turned and charged him things would of been different and the other known occasion it was just he was chasing a female and ran into a mum and cub on the way 😢sad but he’s not a wild crazy killer 😊

Its not really about hunger. Don't know why this guy thinks do. Its about mating. The male wants to screw, but the female won't mate if she has cubs to raise. So by killing her cubs he eliminates competition and potentially gets to mate a bit later. This is common behavior in predator species.
No I think he has to be way off here,because I've heard on other documentaries that the male adults are the most problematic danger the Mama's have to consistently deal with and to me that just makes far more common sense
