    N55+DCT is a fun combo, but I can't comment on the N54's.
    My N55 has been generally reliable except for cooling system and top end gaskets issues, too bad the DCT is the weak link, fkn mechatronics unit is playing. Looking into just replacing the complete trans if needed.

  • @Trenchluv
    @Trenchluv Před 5 lety +6

    N54 is absolutely the leader. Reliability is only an issue for those who dont understand the engine and its "quirks" you can easily protect it against it's own attachments be it injectors, HPFP , water pumps, turbos etc. You just need to predetermine any issues and it's a beast. Doing 550whp on pures stage 2 no sweat. ....the car does require a decent amount of $ in maintenance but I'd chalk that up to "enthusiast expenditures" Peace!

      @Trenchluv Před 5 lety

      @@ebdbdave in case you didnt know. Most vehicles have no issues with fuel pumps. Injectors. Turbos or carbon deposits and a few other misc peripherals(ie water pumps) on the engine lasting easily 200k or even 300k miles. Here at n54 club these are considered 100k miles or less items.....most of the time! There's always exceptions though. But at this point its very subjective.... so many people modify to heavily modify the cars that it's impossible to keep good track of them.

Really not to much added, but feels effortlessly fast and pulls hard. My N55 is a 2011 135i DCT has all the goodies cooling, port injection m, e85 with hybrid turbo etc.. 520hp & 530tq at the wheels over 600 at crank with conservative tune. I am 4244.72$ into my n54 335i build. Including price of the car. Rebuilt the turbos, had them balanced, used vrsf downpipes. Vrsf inlets, ngk 1step colder plugs, Eldor Coils, intake gaskets, walnut blast, voltage regulator, cold side charge pipe and hks bov (used bov), Overflow bottle, aluminum valve cover, MHD Wifi Dongle, MHD Super License. Yeah everything is used, or cheap parts I had to do some work to, or I waited until it was on sale. And the car was believed to need a transmission, but I knew it was just the voltage reg.
    Figure I can probably finish the power/maintence stuff for about 2-2500. Then move onto cosmetics and handling. Need to figure out the cheapest way to get a LSD in the car. Ford 8.8 would be fucking nice, but its also expensive (the install kit) and beyond my skill level to fab.

    None of them have forged pistons and the m135i and the N55 in the 7 series has a forged crank. I say if you are going to a video on the topic, double check that stuff first. The "forged" issue is often brought up with a ton of misinformation. Not to mention when you consider the types of forging that you get when for example, when you buy quality aftermarket forged rods versus oem sinter (sic) forged rods which are the same in the n54 and n55.

    N54 crankshaft is only component which is forged.
    Anecdotally, a very good tuner shop told me that they had a N54 crankshaft and an early N55 crankshaft side by side on the bench and could not see any material difference with the eye. However, BMW does specifically state the N55 is not forged in their literature. There is a BMW publication www.bimmerpost.com/goodiesforyou/N55-Product-Information.pdf which highlights the differences.

      Was going to post similar as I read a few long forum threads that debunked the N54 forged internals myth. I think the biggest thing holding the N55 back is the stock turbo.
      I went FBO on my F30 335i not that long ago. Bootmod3 stage 2.
      @60k mi I had a valve cover gasket that needed replace, a heater core that went bad, and a bad coil pack causing a misfire. Warranty covered all of that. I drove hard last summer and many of those components were about due. Beyond that I’m one year in on a CPO and no other problems.

    I currently own a 335is Manual N54. I love it it is the last BMW I believe to come with an N54. I have no complaints, I have not had one problem in terms of reliability. I do not know if its because BMW fixed all this problems to the previous N54 gen such as fuel injectors, HPFP, etc... But it runs like a champ and its a manual, yes its not as fast as a DCT, but it is much more fun to downshift yourself and match the revs etc... My complaint so far is modding it. Since there is 2 turbos there seems to be much more accessories, tubing (obviously), parts. But I plan to go single down the road. I have never owned or driven a N55 so I have no opinion on it.

    N54 if you're specifically building a 600hp car. N55 will do 500hp more reliable and you'll have to switch to single turbo with the N54 above 600 anyways because of heat. N54 stock bottom end will take more but lets be honest you're gonna open it up anyways before you swing for 700.

      Omair Siddiqui thats true but that’s because people typically use a Precision turbo with a T4 twin scroll manifold. Those turbo kits are very well designed and are capable of producing well over 1000hp. Bigger turbo more power....it’s commonsense.
