- This is Part 1 of a multi-part video series I will be filming on this topic. The title pretty much explains itself. What's your take? Which one do you think is better?

In case you were wondering, part 2 will include a full back to back driving review of both engines! And, the N55 is better ;)
Simply Car Things good. We can run it if you want. My single turbo set up in my N54 is making like 700 whp on stock internals and turbos
Blues Clues M3 I feel he was saying this from a reliability pov, I have the n55 in my 335 with a tune that’s pushing 400 hp but after almost a year of owning it I wish I would have gone with the n54. Never too late for a engine swap right?😂
HijackAffect bro I’m just trolling. I don’t own an N54 😂😂😂
Blues Clues M3 s58 ass biiiiiitch
N54 is better. U FRIKIN r biased because u own an n55 car.
2007 n54 335i 190,000 miles still running the streets like a champ 💪🏽😎
09 335i with 138k and I've not had one issue yet and I've been coast to coast twice in this car...how much more reliability do you need??
Y’all lucky mine shit just sitting outside has sum transmission problems only has 81k🤕
josh dominguez that’s why you buy manual
I've got e93 N54 with 30,000 miles ;) have had the high pressure fuel pump changed the positive battery terminal and full service I'm interested in modding to like 400-500 bhp but haven't got a clue where to start or how to do it as I live in the UK
I HAVE X6 35I N54.
210000KM no problème..
Best BMW moteur
Personally N55 over N54 for a daily platform but if you want max hp or want a crazy build, go N54.
i definitely agree with you!
My boy has had just as many problems with his N55 as my N54, maintenance your car and they're both fine
So in other words the n55 is for pussys?
@@tamers3327 learn to spell
Price is also something to consider as the n55 is newer and more expensive (at least here in Europe) so n54 is more affordable even tho they still too expensive
team n54 . Thanos drives a n54.
one of the infinity stones is the water pump lol
Yes
Simply Car Things 😂
As a current N55 owner and previous N54 owner, I agree with your overall conclusions. For me, I'll take the N55. Between the reliability, great sound and linear power delivery, it's just so fun to own and drive. As for power modding, we'll see more and more solutions in the coming years for the N55.
totally agree with you man, after owning both i side with N55's!
3 yrs later. N55s for the win.
You came along way you influenced me to get a n55 11 335i you motivated me . Thanks keep it up sir loving it
Just want to say I’ve been watching your vids since wayback when you first got your 335i glad to see you coming up!
wow man, thank you! Really appreciate the kind words
Hey brother really been enjoying your channel, just picked up my N55 coupe watched all your videos while I was waiting for it I appreciate your work.
thank you so much man! Really means a ton!
This video is literally everything I preach when it comes to these cars. Well done
glad to hear that man, thank you!
Great video idea! Keep doing these style videos!
thank you! Will do!
N54 for tuning and power. If you don't care about that get N55
you are spot on!
quick question is your car lowered on springs only ? or dempers also ?
Very objective and also very accurate. Good job
appreciate that man, thank you for watching!
I do like the sound of an N55 😁
meee too!
Love em both! After selling my f30 I really miss my n55. I also miss my f80 m3 so I'm thinking older m2 next, best of both worlds 😁
an M2 might be the move right!
Im in a 13 335ix pwg n55. Need more power. Running e30 tune. Cp, bm3, downpipe, intercooler res delete. Gonna add intake next. Nice video keep it up
appreciate it man, look into an upgraded lpfp and a custom flash. eventually an upgraded turbo if its within your budget
Got e92 N55. Upgraded clutch going on today, then 3.4 big boost in a couple weeks. No major issues yet.
damnn! How much power are you looking to make with the kit? Sounds epic
I'd still need port injection. 600ish full e85. Low 500s pump or e50mix
@@MV3xWADExCOUNTY sounds so awesome man, if you're in socal we should link up and do a video
Let's see that video!!!
N55+DCT is a fun combo, but I can't comment on the N54's.
My N55 has been generally reliable except for cooling system and top end gaskets issues, too bad the DCT is the weak link, fkn mechatronics unit is playing. Looking into just replacing the complete trans if needed.
Going to start playing around with towards the end of the yeah as it's no longer my daily.
Mark Halden that’s a bummer to hear man! i wonder if that’s part of the reason why bmw switched to the zf8 over the DCT gearbox
N54 is absolutely the leader. Reliability is only an issue for those who dont understand the engine and its "quirks" you can easily protect it against it's own attachments be it injectors, HPFP , water pumps, turbos etc. You just need to predetermine any issues and it's a beast. Doing 550whp on pures stage 2 no sweat. ....the car does require a decent amount of $ in maintenance but I'd chalk that up to "enthusiast expenditures" Peace!
OpenRoads what kind of maintenance? Outside the norm?
@@ebdbdave in case you didnt know. Most vehicles have no issues with fuel pumps. Injectors. Turbos or carbon deposits and a few other misc peripherals(ie water pumps) on the engine lasting easily 200k or even 300k miles. Here at n54 club these are considered 100k miles or less items.....most of the time! There's always exceptions though. But at this point its very subjective.... so many people modify to heavily modify the cars that it's impossible to keep good track of them.
@@ebdbdave oh and also....we have a few open recalls lol.... injectors hpfp airbags and heater blower fan. There may be a few others there I forget.
I have both. The N54 pulls.harder in lower RPMs and generally feels smoother while building speed. My 335i e93 N54 automatic has basic bolt on parts with tune. Really not to much added, but feels effortlessly fast and pulls hard. My N55 is a 2011 135i DCT has all the goodies cooling, port injection m, e85 with hybrid turbo etc.. 520hp & 530tq at the wheels over 600 at crank with conservative tune. Fast but sweet spot is in the 3500-5500 range.
Simply Car Things, you compared the experience you had with a 50,000 mile n55 to a how many mile n54?
Im about to buy a e90 335i withe the N55. Super stoked coming from the n52
gona be a big upgrade man! You'll love it!
Thank you for this video. I’m looking to buy a 335i
Have you felt lately that too many people have learned about n54 potential and used e90 335i prices have started to go up? I think that some people collectively known as "Honda crowd" decided to get these cars and not do any maintenance and just run the car's into the ground
i definitely agree with that to an extent. But a lot of people who get into N54's take great care of the cars and treat them with respect, theres just those that have to ruin it for others lol
Super informative man. I'm n55 all the way
thanks man! i'm N55 too ;)
I have an 08 e60 n54 and love the car just scared of the rumors always luckily she good got mine at 65k miles hope she last me til the end i plan to daily drive her even after i get my next.
Ok with all the support and info available, can the average DIYer fix these problems with basic tools? Or do I need a lift with special tools used only for this platform?
N55 was smooth and reliable, selling my F10 after no issues. Im picking up the B58TU1 M340i. Should be better built internals and closed deck, gap N54s and is smoother than N55 from my B58 loaners I've gotten from SA.
GodKing804 that’ll be an absolute monster man! love the new 3 series, especially the M340i
Bro u explained vary well. Basically n54 is for race hoons and n55 is for average daily drivers. Ur right about engine tones n54 sounds more raspy amd n55 sounds deeper tone being a single turbo.
thank you bro, appreciate the kind words!
How about the fuel consumption between these 2 ?
Awesome video you should make a new video to compare all the parts that they improved upon on the n55 compared to the n54 such as the injectors.
i appreciate the feedback, thank you! Thats a great idea id like to do a video on that
@@SimplyCarThings Thanks! Honestly looked up an n55 injector for the first time and it looks radically different. I can't imagine what else is different.
N54 preforms like a 2J N55 sounds like a RB
agreeed!
Say what?
Thanks for being honest about the n54
no problem!
I have n55 e92 and its amazing ;)
E92Beast I have e90 fbo E85 n55 car
cant ever go wrong with one!
Me too, my DME is locked tho so I can’t tune my shit without unlocking and removing the ECU
Hell yeah
Very good points! But I can understand why the N55 platform is good viable option if you don't wanna deal with the headaches of a N54 lol. All in all both are good platforms but if you really want get the most performance out of your 335i you might as well go N54.
totally agree brotha, appreciate your input!
N55. The f30 is crazy
I have a 135i n55 dct and absolutely love it. N54 has more power potential out of the box but the n55 has much better reliability, and thats what matters to me because i like to drive my car everyday. I love the dct (best transmission ever)although i am a diehard manual fan.. so sometimes i do feel like something is missing
me too man, i love not having to worry about my car! the DCT is incredible i wish mine had it as well althougn im extremely satisifed with the insane zf8 gearbox
I am 4244.72$ into my n54 335i build. Including price of the car. Rebuilt the turbos, had them balanced, used vrsf downpipes. Vrsf inlets, ngk 1step colder plugs, Eldor Coils, intake gaskets, walnut blast, voltage regulator, cold side charge pipe and hks bov (used bov), Overflow bottle, aluminum valve cover, MHD Wifi Dongle, MHD Super License. Yeah everything is used, or cheap parts I had to do some work to, or I waited until it was on sale. And the car was believed to need a transmission, but I knew it was just the voltage reg.
Figure I can probably finish the power/maintence stuff for about 2-2500. Then move onto cosmetics and handling. Need to figure out the cheapest way to get a LSD in the car. Ford 8.8 would be fucking nice, but its also expensive (the install kit) and beyond my skill level to fab.
Let's put it this way... It was cheaper for me to upgrade to a 435 than to keep my 335. Oh and that 8 speed tho
oh man, the 8spd gearbox is just next level!
How much power can a stock bottom end n55 produce reliably ?
Can't put it any better than that!
love your videos, i wanna tune my car 435i bootmod3 stage, any reliability engines ?
thank you! mine has been extremely reliable with bootmod3, no issues
I’m planning on buying a 135i this week. There is a 2011 n55 with around 57k miles and a 2008 n54 with only 25k miles. Both around the same price. I’m really torn on what To purchase Considering both are in good condition. I’d prefer the n55 for its reliability cause if I were to mod I wouldn’t go over 450hp anywho. But 25k miles is so low I’d feel like an idiot passing that up for a car with 32k more miles
Who is running a speedtech stage 3 on an n55 PWG?
How about the b58?
None of them have forged pistons and the m135i and the N55 in the 7 series has a forged crank. I say if you are going to a video on the topic, double check that stuff first. The "forged" issue is often brought up with a ton of misinformation. Not to mention when you consider the types of forging that you get when for example, when you buy quality aftermarket forged rods versus oem sinter (sic) forged rods which are the same in the n54 and n55.
appreciate the input! its tough to find any concrete information on this, i see a lot of differing statements on the forums/news sites
@@SimplyCarThings No problem, I can share some documentation on some of it from BMW if you care but it is out there. Also, the N55 has Valvetronic and the N54 does not. The N55 also has a better DME (not mosfet failures and it is just better from a tuners perspective), a better PCV system, etc. If you have an email, I have some other info as well.
This is the info on the forged crank and which models apply

I personally like how N54 spools with aftermarket turbos and a good BOV sounds better on it imo.
that is very true!
N55 all the way! And specifically the m235i!!!! With the 8-speed automatic!
yessssssirrr!! completely agree
You're comparing two different generations which isn't exactly fair. 135i N54/N55, 335i N54/N55.. See how this works?
Great content bro!
I am planning to go for n55 because of its reliability. However, I want to feel the power and I want to beat mustang GT’s is that possible with it or I have to get N54?
It's possible with fbo and ethanol tunes
Love the n54, but i just got a water pump code...n55 coming soon...hopefully.
Same water pump scheme.
ay!! welcome to the gang
Yup, same water pump there bud 👍🏼
You think a used one with 80k miles will last awhile?
And audi a6 or a bmw n55. Which is the cheapest to maintain?
What’s your opinion on the n54 in the 335is?
I'm currently selling a black on black 335IS convertible 2011 65,000 miles asking 17,500
Team N54 but in a 2008 535XI. Once I do the RB Turbo swap, skies the limit.
N55 KINGS ONLY!!! Slap a big turbo and proper tuning for stock old N55 motor, and you can make close to 600whp, which will part-for-part be more reliable than the N54. Ofcourse N54 forged internals and crank are definitely an amazing feature, but it comes with its own host of problems. I believe both these motors are amazing inventions at their time, and as we are seeing, only time will tell where this BMW 6-cyl platform will evolve to!
N55 vs N54 im stuck. I need 450hp as reliable as possible. Are the n54 problems not able to prevent/solve by placing aftermarket parts?
N54...a money pit. N55 most reliable modern BMW engine ever! Lower maintenance cost n the long run, lower than the B58.
Its reliability is not dissimilar to the N52.
FCPeuro is every N54 owners best friend.
Agreed!
drove a z435is and m4 convertible back to back and z4 felt faster and engine more responsive, - yes it slighter - but even with less power on paper the n54 and 7 dct put power down better I thought - n54 vs s55. Bought the z4 and added dinan stage 2 - amazing in every way. (I did need to swap out injectors to index 12)
love my f32 n55
n54s love 30FF 🤭
Brandon Dolandolan dealing with that now. Smh.
FACTS! lol!
UPPERROOMENT mine goes into limp during WOT never get a code though
1Slow5.7 same here. I had an injector issue a year ago and I thought that’s what it was this time. Replaced three and still went into limp. Checked my faults and I have that 30ff. I called the mechanic yesterday and he’s gonna do a smoke test on Friday. Fingers crossed. I hope the fix isn’t gonna be crazy expensive. I tired like 50 times to trace thru those damn vacuum lines. Lol
UPPERROOMENT let me know what it turns out to be
Why you didn’t get the b58?
M240i's were too pricey for me!
N54 crankshaft is only component which is forged.
Anecdotally, a very good tuner shop told me that they had a N54 crankshaft and an early N55 crankshaft side by side on the bench and could not see any material difference with the eye. However, BMW does specifically state the N55 is not forged in their literature. There is a BMW publication www.bimmerpost.com/goodiesforyou/N55-Product-Information.pdf which highlights the differences.
wow, thats great info! Thanks for sharing
The crankshaft and rods are what I have always seen.
Max Nix the N55 in a m135i has a forged crank F series
Was going to post similar as I read a few long forum threads that debunked the N54 forged internals myth. I think the biggest thing holding the N55 back is the stock turbo.
I went FBO on my F30 335i not that long ago. Bootmod3 stage 2.
@60k mi I had a valve cover gasket that needed replace, a heater core that went bad, and a bad coil pack causing a misfire. Warranty covered all of that. I drove hard last summer and many of those components were about due. Beyond that I’m one year in on a CPO and no other problems.
I love my e92 with the n55
glad to hear that!
F32 N55 🔥
In Germany good shape 335i start at 12k, the real great ones are 18k :(
B58?
BMW does oil changes every 10k miles with the CPO warranty. Are you doing oil changes on your own or are you following what BMW recommends?
WG every 5k miles
@@heatchamps2011 BMW told me that if I do oil changes on my own and not at a BMW service center it can possibly void my CPO warranty.
WG oh well idk about that . I guess listen to them. I dont have warranty so i do it on my own. If u do wanna do it on ur own then use the oem one to be safe. I use liqui moly
@@heatchamps2011 I've already got 1 free oil change under my warranty I just feel like 10k is a huge amount for oil changes on a turbo engine smh CPO warranty is over in June so ill try getting 1 more freebie and then start doing them myself at 4k
@@wg7017 No, just document it with receipts.
so i should get a 535i i want to mod it i want it to burble / rawr maybe spit fire lol
I don’t get how people say N54 is better for power, when every 700+hp N54 is a big single turbo; surely that’s just as viable to do on the N55 which is already single turbo?
I currently own a 335is Manual N54. I love it it is the last BMW I believe to come with an N54. I have no complaints, I have not had one problem in terms of reliability. I do not know if its because BMW fixed all this problems to the previous N54 gen such as fuel injectors, HPFP, etc... But it runs like a champ and its a manual, yes its not as fast as a DCT, but it is much more fun to downshift yourself and match the revs etc... My complaint so far is modding it. Since there is 2 turbos there seems to be much more accessories, tubing (obviously), parts. But I plan to go single down the road. I have never owned or driven a N55 so I have no opinion on it.
thats a great setup man, a true gem!
@@SimplyCarThings Thanks man, yeah I heard it's 1 of 717 manual 335is ever made so I am keeping this baby forever
@@smirk369 yea i would definitely hold onto it man!
13’ 335is, with dct. I respect the choice for manual, my last n54 e92 was. But damn this dct is so enjoyable....and fast 💨

if you can afford the price tag of a B58 car, then i'd say go for it as well!
F15 n55 downpipe flash tune stage 1 car is so much better u can feel the power waiting on turbo pip upgrade this week and stage 2 flash
Damn car is Louder than his voice 😳
I have a n55 and it gives me plenty of issues
Could you elaborate on which problems?
Only reason I got an n54 is cuz I have a daily that’s a Nissan, you can’t go into buying an n54 expecting reliability. My bro has an e92 n55 and my car would blow his out the water. N54 POWERRRR
ayyyyeee! thats great to hear man, yea having a daily is very convenient with an N54
N54 ftw
Went from 07 335i n54 89k miles and then straight to a n55 2014 335i m sport 44k miles. N55 is better. With the money I were to spend on a n54 and to build it to around 450whp and repairs because of unreliability i would rather spend that money on a f80 M3 or an M2. Just my opinion.
N54 if you're specifically building a 600hp car. N55 will do 500hp more reliable and you'll have to switch to single turbo with the N54 above 600 anyways because of heat. N54 stock bottom end will take more but lets be honest you're gonna open it up anyways before you swing for 700.
if my interest is not more 300hp. 54 or 55?
N55 for sure
@@SimplyCarThings thanks. I know n55 crankshaft has problem. can i change it by n54 crankshaft?
Love my fbo n55, makes more than enough power and sounds way better doing it

You probably straight pipe with no money spent on the exhaust. Constantly see bros in 335i's like they are ballin with a ragged out bmw.

N55 cuz i know itll start up every day
N55 gang :) but definitely go with N54 if you want max high end power
N54 is definitely the better engineered engine. It’s the Italian injectors and the shit quality water pump and fuel pump that bolt on to the engine that make it unreliable. That being said, if you can’t afford the maintenance don’t buy it! Get the n55

Simply Car Things love the channel man !! I’m looking to pick up a 2014 435i coupe M everything clean every service record and I personally know the BMW service manager that took care of car at BMW dealer here in California. Car has 136k on odometer and I can secure a after market warranty for another 36k I’m hesitant but it This will be my first turbo car and I’m a little hesitant. Thoughts ?
Over the years I’ve owned a 323i 330ci and an 09 328i.
The way I see it, the N54 is favored and hype by many is because it’s twin turbo. Of course the N54 is going to produce more power with two turbos. We can all agree If the N55 came with two turbos stock it would be better.
Check out Alpina B3S
thats a good point!
not really because single turbo n54 is where it’s really at
Omair Siddiqui thats true but that’s because people typically use a Precision turbo with a T4 twin scroll manifold. Those turbo kits are very well designed and are capable of producing well over 1000hp. Bigger turbo more power....it’s commonsense.
Frank Poncherello not really because if you strap a 6266 to a n55 it will still make significantly less power with the same amount of boost compared to an n54 and that has been proved by SJ335
N55 all the way
n54 all day!
Love my n54.. except right now.. on a transit truck from nor cal to so cal water pump grenaded in hotel parking lot.. I have a replacement at home cheaper to fix myself plus dont trust anyone working on my car but myself. Got 102k out of stock water pump
Living on borrowed time for sure.
ah man sorry to hear! part of the N54 grind, worth it!
N55 is for people with a lotta money
N54 is for people with a WHOLE LOTTA MONEY😅
I mean in repairs, not the purchase price

335i e92 N54 all day.. A must do a xhp trans flash stage 3 whole different car. quick as a dual clutch when shifting... check out there CZcams videos...
I still dont get why the n54 is so much easier to get big power on
N54>n55 I've owned both
That exhaust drone though. Horsepower potential shouldn't be the basis of a which is better debate.
So juvenile.
N55 sounds better. Thats about it.
Better reliability too!
